Thanks. I’m still using mine since 4-5 years ago and got another one

Please, just pay a little more and get a much more reliable & faster SSD. This is not a good deal.

    • +14

SSD, faster for sure. But in theory traditional HDD is more reliable than SSD for longer term data storage (unless you drop them). So HDD still got its place.

      • -3

This is a portable HDD that's intended to be used on the go. Much high chance of mechanical damage in your backpack, even when you take due care. Anyone looking to buy a 2.5" HDD is buying for portability not longevity hence why an SSD is a much better alternative.

Especially when you can buy SSDs for under $50/Tb, this item makes no sense.

        • +7

Absolutely wrong. I have around 10 portable HDDs spanning the last 10 years, all used for long-term offsite storage.

Don't listen to @Switchblade88 if you're looking to back up important data like family photos or tax records. HDDs are great for this purpose and far more reliable than SSDs for long-term storage!

          • -1

@Zaddo: I never said HDDs were bad for long-term storage. That's why I've got 80Tb in active use, and another 7 various drives and SSDs currently sitting on my desk. The average cost was $13/Tb.

Friends don't let friends buy HDDs for portable data storage anymore.

            • +2

@Switchblade88: Do these friends stump up the extra cash so their friend can afford the SSD?

        • +1

Yeah that's an ok deal if you already have a way to convert it to an external drive, and you haven't already made your first Amazon Business purchase…

      • +2

I’ve given up buying HDD for family members. They simply do not understand, don’t move the spinning disk! Or face the dreaded click click.,

      • For cold storage yes. The issue with SSD if they are not powered for a long time they lose charge. But if you use the drive frequently this is not a problem. The magnets with mechanical don't stuffer in this way. Otherwise theoretically SSD will last longer. In practise you should never rely on just one format for storage.

And HDDs suffer bit rot too

Dropping 2.5" is only a disaster if they are spinning at the time. Still not recommended even when cold, and heads parked.

Also, many laptop/portable drives have a MEMS accelerometer, and park the heads during a fall.

Completely agree. Unless you keep them in one place all the time it’s just not worth it. Buy an enclosure and an SSD.

What portable 2TB SSD costs a little more than $85?

  • Good guys price matched centrecom black version $85 for me yesterday. Assume JB would do so also.

  • +1
