[CommBank Yello] Gold/Diamond: $1500 Cashback on Home Battery/Solar via Brighte & CommBank Home Energy Loan 3.99% p.a @ CommBank

830

This is 2 deals combined into one for existing Commbank home loan customers:

  1. $1500 (Yello Gold/Diamond) or $750 cashback (others) for a system install through Brighte Marketplace installers and funded through a CommBank home energy loan
  2. Fixed 3.99% (3.99% comparison rate) Home energy loan ($4000 - $50000) for current Commbank Home loan customers, with $0 establishment fee, $0 monthly loan service fee, unlimited additional repayments without a fee so you can pay down faster.

The vendors on Brighte seems pretty good so far. I had a choice of over 40 installers for my Sydney home. You get to pick which ones you want a quote from, either based on your own research or reviews. I'm currently receiving multiple quotes ranging from the budget end ($6000) to higher end ($15k+) systems so you should be able to find an installer for your budget and needs via Brighte.

As an example, after cashback, the cheapest install quoted so far would cost me $4500 for a 15kwh system fully installed with 3.99% finance.

Brighte also offer solar panel installations, hot water and EV charger installations, so if you don't need/want a home battery system, you can still use the above cashback and loan for other energy products.

Loan offer:

Get a discounted rate of 3.99% p.a. and no establishment or loan service fees

CommBank Home Loan customers looking to make an eligible energy-efficient purchase can enjoy:

A discounted interest rate of 3.99% p.a. (comparison rate 3.99% p.a.) on an Unsecured Fixed Rate Personal Loan

A waiver on their establishment fee, monthly loan service fee and any early repayment adjustment.

Cashback Offer:

Exclusive offer with Brighte

Receive up to $1,500 cashback when you request quotes through the Brighte Marketplace, apply and fund a CommBank Home Energy Loan via the Brighte Platform.**
CommBank Yello Gold and Diamond customers receive $1,500 cashback

Can anyone do the calculations and tell whether worth or not

    • +17

      Buy now think later!

      • It applies everywhere 😂

    • +4

There's no fee for early repayment. If you don't wanna pay interest, pay it full up after you get cashback.

      • Does this mean if you get a loan of $1500 for EV charger it's pretty much free with the cashback?

        • +3

Minimum loan amount is $4000 unfortunately!

        • -1

          bruh

      • +7

While what you say is true to get the cashback, this deal is specific to Commbank home loan customers. I would have thought most people with sizable homeloan balances would benefit more by keeping their money in the offset than to pay this loan off earlier, due to the higher interests on the home loans?

        • +3

It is in response to Zeee about whether it's worth it. In short, yes it is if you are looking to get something eligible because you can always not pay the interest if that's your choice.
Besides I thought Ozbargainers have 99.9% of their loan in offset account effectively paying zero interest? Or was that whirlpoolers? Lol.

          • @Bigboomboom: I'm in the minority then… lol.

          • @Bigboomboom: i wish I had money to put in offset LOL

          • @Bigboomboom: It's pretty much the same as the 99.9% of people in Australia who happen to be on that forum earning $250k a year, so it's not that far fetched

  • Damm how about westpac green loan ??

combank yellow is good wish had it with combank instead but ohh well

  • +2

damn, might look into this. finally something worth claiming through yello

  • Will get some quotes to remove my gas connection. I believe I only use gas for my cooktop burners. Anyone done that recently in Sydney?

    • +1

Do you have a natural gas connection or bottles? If you're only using it for cooking you should definitely get it disconnected and either change to bottles or electric. The gas abolishment fee is a bit (upto $1500) but you're probably paying $300 a year just to have gas connected you're barely using.

      • +5

No, you don't need to abolish gas.

Just cap the gas connection. I asked the same question in 2023.

        Read more here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805623

        • oh nice - so I just really need to figure out cooktop and oven and just call my retailer to cancel and use moving as a reason.

          • +1

            @cheap4321: No… Please dont.

You don't need to lie 😂

Read the article in that post. Basically you need to request "capping" of the gas. They just come in and block the pipe at the meter instead of ripping out the gas infrastructure from your house.

For cooktops, some of the expensive brands require 3-phase electricity. So, ask around at the store.

        • Is gas more expensive than Electricity? I use gas for hot water and little cooking (got induction as well)

      • natural gas connection…agl were charging me supply 58c a day and I've switched to dodo who will charge me 48c a day so circa $175-$212 a year.

  • A green home loan installer is very expensive in general.

    • The loan offer is a separate offer to the Brighte cashback, you can use your own preferred supplier and finance it using the 3.99% green loan.

      • There are two green loans.
        1) Green home loan - eligible for cashback, you need to go through with Brighte and CBA does not pay you. They pay installers directly. No monthly fee, no early repayment fee, no application fee. The install address MUST be the same address as your home loan with CBA.
        1) Green personal loan - non-eligible for cashback. You can use the loan for whatever you want (doesn't look like they care, but I haven't tried to apply yet) as long as it's within the eligible products (Solar, home battery, EV charger and even EV/PHEV). No early repayment fee and no application fee BUT there is a $15/month monthly fee.

        • +1
          • Going through Brighte: they mark up the price and you pay for it.

          • You got to provide the quotation or invoice which meet the requirements. Eg: for solar the retailler or installer need to be NETCC approved with installer solar accreditation number.

        • For 2), my understanding is that the stated $15 monthly fee that you see at the application stage will be removed when you have your application approved and they confirm you are an existing home loan customer, so you end up the same as 1). Hence you get the same loan regardless whether you go thru Brighte or not.

          • @assailantsky: No, no. 2 is a separate product altogether. You can use it to buy EV or PHEV as well not just home energy upgrade.

            • @Bigboomboom: Sure, I stand corrected. The t&c clearly states it excludes EV and PHEV:

Customers with an eligible CommBank home loan or investment loan, who take out an Unsecured Fixed Rate Loan for eligible energy-efficient purchases (excluding EV and Hybrid cars) will receive an interest rate of 3.99% p.a. (comparison rate 3.99% p.a.), save $250 on the establishment fee, save $15 a month on the loan service fee and have their Early Repayment Adjustment fee waived (comparison rate calculations are inclusive of this offer).

The important thing to remember is that the loan offer is not limited to products supplied via Brighte. It is available for products supplied by all eligible suppliers outside of Brighte Marketplace.

        • with 1. where does it say install address MUST be the same as address as your home loan with CBA? that'd mess up my plans…

  • I assume this wouldn't double up with any federal or state incentives?

    • Yes it does, my quotes were all inclusive of existing federal incentive (30% off via the Cheaper Home Batteries Program).

  • Were you locked into specific battery solutions? I can see this in the T&Cs, not sure if it's a wrong copy paste from CBA, otherwise pretty restrictive for the $1,500.

To be eligible for this Offer, Customer must:
Be an Australian resident with a valid Australian address (excluding WA and NT).
Purchase a Hinen Battery System that:
    Has minimum usable capacity of 5kWh;
    Is VPP-ready and compatible with POWOW's technical specifications;
Includes a POWOW VPP meter as specified by POWOW.

Nevermind above T&Cs looks like an additional offer if you get the above battery brand, i.e an extra $1,500 on top of the $1,500 Brighte offer, plus government rebates

    • But still have to open a min $4k green loan?

  • How much it will be for the battery after cashback - any one got a quote?

  • how much will the battery cost after cashback and rebates? for a 10 kwh

    • Min loan $4k so min out of pocket $2500…?

I had quote for under $2k for 10kw. Maybe if you go for 25~30kw you can hit that 4k mark?

  • Just sharing my experience with this. I requested quotes from Brighte 2.5 weeks ago. Got an email advising contractors would be in touch within two days to inspect / provide quotes. I followed up Brighte three times over two weeks and haven’t received any contact from a solar provider.
Last time I followed up was Friday and still haven’t heard back. Of course I want to take advantage of $1500 chance but they’re making it very difficult. I’ve separately received a quote from another local provider but they’re not part of the cashback program.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience. How many installer was in your area thru Brighte? I found the panel for Sydney was very small (3) when I accidentally clicked on the Hinen battery VPP offer for additional $1500 cash back. But my choice of installers increased to 40+ when I skipped that offer. Out of the 8 installers I selected, 7 have called back within 2 business days. The other one emailed instead to arrange a time to call.

      • Six installers available in my area. I selected quotes from three. Only requesting solar. No battery or water etc. so should be the widest range.
        Perth CBD area.

Spoke with another contractor separately who I like who was surprised they weren’t included in the offer because they do work with Brighte. I even asked Brighte if they can connect me with them (because this contractor has provided good service and provided a quote) but Brighte says they can’t add contractors to the list at this stage. Shame.

        • Might be a marketing share. Hard to believe CBA and Brit footing the 1500 bill.

          • @plague69: I expect a contractor pays a commission to Brighte for the connection. Independent of this promotion.
So I suspect quotes will be inflated but hopefully coming out ahead after $1500 cashback. After looking at other comments in this thread - maybe not.
I’ve got separate quotes via SolarQuotes companies for sub <$5k for 3.6kW panels, 3kW inverter with optimiser. Everyone wants to sell me more panels but I don’t have the roof space or the energy demand, or a fancier inverter for future-proofing / battery, but I have no interest in the latter.
Interestingly, one company provided quotes via SolarQuotes and may quote again through Brighte so we can see what the markup is.

Only person who has been pragmatic and providing useful advice is the contractor who isn’t available via Brighte which is a shame. May go ahead with them anyway if Brighte / other contractors can’t get their act together.

This was exactly my experience around a month ago. In the end I finally had one guy come out and put the hard sell on after hassling Brighte. He didn't know anything about the equipment he was selling and read from a Powerpoint presentation on his laptop. Gave me the most ludicrous price I've seen, was 20% cheaper by the time I thanked him for his time, and that night he emailed me a "revised" quote with some "savings he found" for another few $k cheaper. Still cheaper after cashback to just go through another retailer so I went back to Solarquotes and had a better deal within a few days.

For reference, he quoted 13.2kw low end system for $18k fitted

I ended up paying $22k for 15.35kw and a 25.6kw battery mid spec in QLD.

This cashback deal can bite me.

  • Payment of AUD $1.00 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy dispatched from Customer's battery system during VPP Events, subject to a maximum of AUD $300 per calendar year ("Usage Credits"). Usage Credits shall be calculated quarterly and paid within thirty (30) days of the end of each calendar quarter.

What does this mean? You get paid $1/kWh when power is drew from your battery? After 300kWh in a calendar year they stop paying? Assuming they only draw power when you have excess?

    • The T&C you've quoted is for an additional $1500 cashback offer (separate to the $1500 cashback in this deal) for the Hinen Battery VPP in Brighte.

Select "skip” to be taken to the full panel of installers for all brands of battery systems.

I tried contact the 2x Birghte solar retaillers (WA) , 1 didn’t get back to me and the other one quoted me $27k for 10kw solar and 15kw batteries. Its $10k above what I quoted from other retaillers.

    • +1

So this is where they ripping off? Jump up the prices for cashback. But this much, unbelievable

      • +1

Yes, I'm ok if few grand mark up but when I compared with the quote from other retailler (same system) it was like $10k more.

        • Thats crazy

  • +1

The quotes I received from Brighte's marketplace were significantly more expensive than other reputable businesses.
It was cheaper to get the loan and forgo the "$1500 cash back" by signing with another provider. YMMV.

    • Oki.
      Not worth the hassle

  • Explain - do you HAVE to go via the CBA platform? Or can you go direct from Brighte website? There are more options on the Brighte website. This is ambiguous:

Receive up to $1,500 cashback when you request quotes through the Brighte Marketplace, apply and fund a CommBank Home Energy Loan via the Brighte Platform.**

  • Has anyone in WA gone far enough to see if you can do the 10k interest free WA loan, and then use commbank for the rest?

Im assembling quotes at the moment and one of the companies that will quote is on the list. Unsure if i can just request again through the portal and expect the same quote (surely, right..?)

    • Well, that'd be a great way to verify if they're adding massive mark-ups like what was mentioned further above.

I'm in WA and also interested in how this goes.

      • +1

Ill try remember to report back if i find out, theyre coming out and quoting me next week.

I'm in VIC and the quotes through all the Brighte / CBA approved installers were significantly higher than other suppliers. It's a fake $1500 cashback. My use case - I have a PW3 already and was after the PW3 expansion pack. I know still awaiting final approvals (in VIC at least), however most reputable companies were quoting between 7.5k - 9.5k (after government rebate). Every Brighte / CBA affiliated quote was 13k plus (after gov rebate). Couldn't believe it.

    • Where abouts in Vic are you

For anyone interested, I have some updates.

There is a lot of confusion as to the terms and conditions of the promotion(s) with CommBank. If anyone wants to DM me, I am happy to explain my understanding (as discussed with CBA) noting you will have difficulty talking to anyone there about it. Every time I call, I get bounced around from team to team and then eventually to the App, where no one can talk to you, and you end up receiving incorrect advice, or just directed to the website. I am not a CBA rep not can I make guarantees about what will happen, but I can explain my understanding based on a lot of research and discussions with various stakeholders.

    I would note that:

    • the $1,500 cashback is obviously more valuable for a smaller package or panel set up ($1.5k cashback on a $5k purchase is much more effective than $1.5k cashback on a $20k purchase);
    • it is unclear whether the "eligible energy-efficient purchases" (i.e. minimum panel size of 6.0 kW) is necessary. DM me for further info if you have queries on this;
    • when considering if this has value to you, I assume if you are taking advantage of this offer, you have a home loan with CommBank around the 5.5% - 6.0% range. It seems like you can get a 3.99% loan for a term of 1 to 7 years. If you are accepting a $10,000 quote, please consider: (1) you are not parting with $10k which would otherwise be in your offset account, saving you significant interest expenses on your home loan; (2) yes, you are paying interest on this new loan, but it is at a lower rate of 3.99% with no other fees; (3) you get $1,500 cashback thrown into your offset to further offset your home loan. Use AI to help you run some calcs, but even if quotes are like for like (c.f. without finance), this is a very financially attractive offer due to the interest arbitrage, provided you are eligible for the loan;
    • contractors likely pay Brighte a commission in the range of 10%-20%. This becomes unattractive with $20k quotes (commission erodes the cashback), but viable with $5k quotes. The mid-range is case by case. Ask for transparency from the contractor, and make the effort to get a few varied quotes.
    • I am looking at just getting additional panels added. In your talkings with CBA have you come across any other conditions that would stop me receiving the cashback?

      • That’s not relevant to my situation, but I understand if you hit the $4,000 minimum, you will be eligible if you have a home loan. Per comment above by OP - there appear to be two loan products.

The “Green Home Loan” probably will not get you over the line. The “Green Personal Loan” will. It doesn’t appear to have an “eligible energy efficient purchase” limitation. You just need to finance via Brighte to get $1,500 cashback with a minimum finance amount of $4k. Then you can match the terms of the “Green Home Loan” making you eligible for the 3.99% interest rate and other fees waived, assuming you have an eligible CommBank home loan.

  • I have also looked into this process and found the experience painful at best. First quote was thousands more than a quote from a non Brighte/CBA partner. 2nd company - had meeting over the phone and did not then send through a quote and hasn't responded to texts/emails either.

Looks like it may not be worth the $1500.
