SPC Aussie Crushed & Diced Tomatoes 400g $0.85, Continental Fried Rice 180g $1.65 (Select Stores Only, Excl. SA, TAS, NT) @ IGA

430

Both Australian products, great prices. One day only. Enough to get me into an IGA.

TBH can't vouch for the SPC tomato taste - last meal I made with them was a bit sour but it also may have been the cheap wine…

Rice varieties are 180g, also haven't tried them, any reviews? Pasta sachets also the same price.

Check your local, as IGAs tend to vary.

I’d pay extra for Australian grown

I understand the sentiments but this taste rubbish in front of Mutti. Sorry!

        • What do you assume the differences in taste is due to? Variety, or just regional climate/processing?

@Embaloo: "Variety, or just regional climate/processing?"

All of the above plus centuries of experience and things like volcanic soil etc. Australia can make some great ones e.g. there's a place near Port Stephens where we regularly buy 5kg at a time when passing but the industry seems to focus on bulk deals like canning etc.

Given tomatoes are key to so many Italian recipes it's quite important to get them right. The same applies to Pasta but fortunately all the major supermarkets carry decent Italian pasta now - it's much paler than the standard brands and just tastes better. They could easily compete if they wanted to.

            • @freddofrog42: This is the correct answer. Australian tomatoes lack natural sweetness, you will need to compensate by adding a fair amount of sugar e.g. for spagbol recipes

We always bought Aus grown but once I tasted Mutti there was no going back.

          Thankfully Costco stock Mutti.

Give me an Aus Mutti at a close price point and I will buy paying a bit more.

    • Mutti cherry tomatoes 😋😋

    • The Mutti difference is the excessive salt. You're paying for expensive salt.

Except the Mutti Cherry Tomatoes (mentioned above) dont have added salt?

      Mutti all the way.

    • I'd buy Mutti if on sale, otherwise stick to Annalisa given they offer fantastic quality at almost half the price of Mutti.

  • I just looked, there there are a lot of Mutti variations. Is Cherry tomato the one to try? Pulpa, Baby Roma, Organic.

    • Cherry and Pulpa - the best I have tasted. Others, I have not tried!

  • Mutti San Mazarno all the way baby

Thanks OP. I also appreciate the link to the page that shows participating stores as their usual 3 day offers don't normally include Sydney based stores but I see in this Market Day promotion they do. :-)

  • If you exclude the best places, then it isn't a real deal.
