  • Even after ignoring the amateur user mistakes related to this printer, it has a high number of reliability issues. Decided to go with Elegoo CC

    • I feel like with the cheaper printers, it's a little hit & miss.

@Kelvin H. as one source has been using it fine.

I'm still here, 200h in. No issues outside of a clog I had to clear - new filament roll that arrived wet. Usually dry my filament before use but I decided not to that one time, serves me right for doing something different.

The unit has received a few firmware and slicer updates since the last time I commented. The print quality seems to have improved on the standard profile in the slicer.

Latest print was this box for the Wolfbox Air Duster from Prime Day using JAYO Silk PLA+ for the enclosure, and Elegoo Rapid PLA+ for the inserts.

        • the box looked amazing! do you mind sharing the model?

        • +1

          nice,

Surface looks good but it could do probably do a flow calibration to get the top surface even better.
I found Jayo matte at 0.94 compared to stock bambu matte profile was perfect after doing one round of flow calibration test prints.

          • @3dprintdeals: Yeah, I haven't gotten around to any of that but I really should. Have been happy enough with the prints coming out of the box.

        • Great inspiration! I have one of those dusters! And one of these printers!

I can't remember the exact price but i paid ~$800 for S1 & Ace. I am at about 550 hours of printing.
We are building a new house so printing some really boring stuff however.
        - Screw and nuts in different colours so i can align a laser.
        - Ventilation plenums
        - HVAC plenum parts
        - Angled shims/packers due to the unique angle of the construction.
        - Tool storage hodlers
        - Gridfinity parts
        - Jigs for routers

        Plus the manditory
        - Inifity cube
        - T-Rex print in place fidget toy
        - Couple of harry potter wands for the kids
        - among us figures for a kids party.
        - Impossible fidget toys.

I am running Sunlu and Jayo bulk cheap stuff for PLA and PLAHS/PLA+. And we are printing some in ABS.

The only issues i have had.
        - A couple of garbled G-Code transfers
        - ABs really really sticks to the print tray, i am going to print all my ABS parts in a batch and buy a new tray for PLA.

I haven't used the multi-colour much for any print outs, but i do use the ACE as i like being able to select a different colour between prints and more often I have auto filiment switch over so i can just keep mashing print and no worrying about how much filiment is left.

I am flat out at the moment so haven't spent much time with it other than setting it up and hitting print. i am using it as an appliance/tool rather than tinkering and trying to get the best out of it. For fidget toys i want a better finish on i run it in 'quiet' as it runs slower and for components you won't see in the house i run it in sport as i am happy with a few defects. I haven't bothered to do test towers and temp checks on it.

Most of the bad reviews i found were from when it came out as they definately look to have rushed it to market, but from what i can tell now if you get one and it works on day one it will keep working.

  • Only ~60hrs in with mine, but seems ok so far.
Has a few times produced a mass of spaghetti, but was using very old filament from my first printer.
Clogged up the head and made a real mess, but only now using new reels.
But when it does print, it seems decent quality (considering I haven't tried to fine tune anything).
Don't understand why it backs out the filament so far/often between prints though, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Nor why it retracts first if I ask it to extrude. Has made getting new filament in a bit frustrating, as it seems like it doesn't feed it in fully, and needs some manual work.
Haven't tried the full multicolour prints yet, but hopefully it works ok.
Certainly easier to use with auto levelling, that is a game changer!

  • Hoping to get below 700 eventually.

    • wait for the next 20/22% promo codes and jump on it before they get a chance to jack it up

      • They seem to jack it the day before the promo. I have seen them miss one of their many listing about a month ago. Fingers crossed.

        • +1

They'll use any excuse to jack it.

I moved from Bambu Lab P1S with AMS to one of these with 2x ACE Pro units. My second ACE Pro was an "Unrepaired" unit from the Anycubic Direct for 3d printer eBay store. It randomly came with a bunch of parts for an S1, but the ACE Pro unit itself was fine, if a little scuffed from use.

Before my P1S I had an Anycubic Vyper. Mostly hated that thing; the P1S was a breath of fresh air. But, I'm not stoked on Bambu's firmware choices. To each their own.

The S1 is definitely not as premium. A lot more plastic and perspex instead of metal and glass. I've already had filament go a little skew-whiff coming through the "unrepaired" ACE Pro; the "fix" is to make sure the filament has a clean cut and is straight-ish when fed in. There are a bunch of models that straighten the filament as it gets fed in and / or have a PTFE tube that feeds the filament much closer to the mechanism that grabs it to avoid it going skew-whiff.

I've added a Buffer Bay to the ACE Pro to prevent sharp angles, and I intend on adding a back roller to assist filament retraction, nozzle wiper to improve nozzle wiping, and then upgrade the heat bed to prevent "tacoing".

I installed Rinkhals after my first benchy. It's not so much a firmware replacement as it is a wrapper for the stock firmware. It adds moonraker / fluidd / mainsail and some other apps. I got OctoApp working, but it doesn't have any of the ACE Pro data so uninstalled. I like Rinkhals, but it's not quite klipper. I can get Orca Slicer working with either fluidd or mainsail, but you lose the ability to sync filaments with the ACE pro units - which sometimes means your prints will fail if there's an unexpected filament compared to what was sent in G-code. So I'll keep using Anycubic Slicer Next for now. I'm investigating getting an Ubuntu Docker Container running with VNC and Anycubic Slicer Next so that I have 1 instance regardless of which PC I'm using.

And that's kinda the overall feel with these units. They're cheap. They've cut corners. They're not as good as Bambu. Probably not as good as everything else. But if you're OK with a little bit of modding / upgrades then these units will do fine. And they're excellent value for money, especially with these eBay deals.

I've had mine for a week. Ordered through eBay using WSJUL17.

Oh I should talk about print quality. It's great. Honestly "when it works" it's on par with P1S. Actually I'm getting better bed adhesion with the S1 than the P1S. I don't think it's as fast - people talk a lot about the the amount of retraction the ACE Pro does when swapping filaments. I think I need better print profiles. This is another aspect where it falls short of the Bambu Printers. Bambu Studio just has decent out of the box print profiles, which I totally took for granted.

I have had a couple of issues with the S1 - but I think that's more to do with the models that I printed; poor use of supports, which I later switched to Tree (auto).

Having the filament swapper be the filament dryer is fantastic.

    • That's a pretty tempting, I really need a second printer right now and haven't been impressed by any of the current printer sale prices.
My current is an A1 and it's pretty much going 24/7 trying to keep up with orders. I really love how set and forget it is and it's been flawless (apart from when I think I had a powergrid issue and it freaked out). I do feel like I know enough about slicer settings now to dive in a bit more with another brand, but I'd definitely be concerned about the long term longevity of these "unrepaired" units

      • Why not a second A1?

        • I want my second printer to be enclosed core x+y so I have access to more filament types and smaller footprint. It's looking like I'll be waiting for the next big sale on a P1S combo

      • +1

I personally wouldn't gamble on an unrepaired printer. The ACE Pro was cheap enough (and I think mechanically simple enough) for me to take a chance.

But $497.17 after coupon for a Kobra S1 Combo is very cheap.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience.

Seems to line up with my expectations. There has to be compromises made to get them this cheap composted to bambu

Prints can be just as good but sometimes may require a little more effort or printed mods for extra reliability

      • That's right. So in general it's not so great for beginners, but perfectly fine for those who know at least a little bit.

    • I have a Vyper and I loved it, but I had an Anet A8 before that which kept breaking down. I'm using the S1 more than I ever used the Vyper though. I don't print multicoloured very often but it's handy to have the ACE to switch between different filaments without having to manually purge.

  • +1

Now 744 on a new code

    • There is also an "unrepaired" combo that's now around $480 after the 20% voucher.

I've currently got an ender3 v2 and I spend more time fixing it than using it, and it's pretty slow when I do print - so I'm tempted by the S1 combo, and $264 is a good saving for the unrepaired one……but from the description it sounds like they don't even look at why it was returned and won't supply any replacement parts or warranty if there is an issue.

Maybe the $744 option is better this time - just need to decide whether it's worth the extra $300 ish for the P1S + AMS instead

      • +2

Don't go for the unrepaired option.

If you are coming from an Ender 3 V2, any modern printer will be a massive upgrade. You can forget all about leveling your bed, doing hotend and fan mods. Spend more time printing than fixing.

        • Went for the new one - ended up around $720 with a discounted gift card.

Bambu sounds like the best quality, but I don't think I need all the bells and whistles for the extra $300+ - plus the spaghetti detection and heated AMS sound quite useful on the S1.

          Cheers for the advice!
