  • I heard with Optus you can't receive SMS overseas unless you pay for roaming?

    • i did received OTP sms from banking when I was overseas last month but not 100% sure if normal sms would go thru

      • Thanks. My Boost is expiring soon and I need to choose a new one. 5G and esim are essential, and it would be nice to have free incoming SMS while overseas just in case.

        • port out for a month then port back to Boost?

          • @Churna: Good idea. Maybe I’ll try one month on the Optus network and then decide.
My experience with Boost has been good. I usually get around 2 bars outside the CBD, it's not great but I haven’t had any speed issues.

Hey mate, just to let you know from shitty experience, you won't get SMS while travelling internationally UNLESS you pay to get International roaming for at least a day, after that it'll work until your back.

      • Were you on an Optus Prepaid plan?

        • yes same plan but no international calls

    • +4

I just came back from overseas last week (Singapore).
Can't even join a network, so no hope to get SMS.
I launched a chat with support and it gets escalated, but not solved.
I am back in Australia and let it passed.
BTW, my Boost ended, so I bought a prepaid Optus sim, and before porting over, I chat with the support person and she ensure me that I can receive OTP from banks. Ends up couldn't. So, beware.

honestly roaming is not guaranteed with any network provider because when you go overseas you are a guest on a local provider which is just chosen over partnership from Optus/whatever company

when I was in China and i was trying to receive OTP from boost… it came extremely delayed or failed at times..

        • +1

Well after the massive data leaks and numerous other scandals (like taking advantages from vulnerable customers recently), I wouldnt trust a single BS from Optus

      • +1

Can confirm Singapore and china roaming fails with Optus.

      • +2

Extremely strange considering Optus is owned by Singtel - which is Singapore's leading telco.

    • It is free but roaming doesn’t work 80% of the time, fails to even get a network… Had to contact them and wait hours to finally get it working. No issues with Felix or telstra

    • postpaid is $5 per day for 5gb calls and text with optus in most countries.

    • +1

You won't recieve SMS overseas unless you get roaming for at least a day.

Source: My strugging in Japan, Korea and Indonesia

      • How much does that cost?

        • +2

$5 for 1 day, but it seems like you only need to trigger it for one day and it’ll last seemingly forever

          • @dsar: But only if you remain in that one country. If you leave it and travel to another country, it won't register on that local network unless you pay for roaming AGAIN!
It's happened to me. Bloody OPTARSE‼️

            • @vrsac: Hmm it seemed to work for me, went from Japan to Korea to Bali

              • @dsar: it doesn't work for everyone. This has been discussed in OzB forums too. It's so inconsistent that you cannot rely on Optus. I will be switching to Boost as soon as this plan expires.

                • @vrsac: Yeah I'm definitely going back to Boost or Vodafone at this stage.

Do we get to see any matching cashback offers from CR or TCB? Last year I bought 2 Sims from CR and credited $100 X 2.

  • 300Gb for first 3 recharges on a 365 day plan? So that means for 3 years?

    • +1

Yes, but I believe next year you have to paid full fee of $350. Can anyone confirm it?

      • +1

        yes, can confirm:

All recharges revert to standard plan price

  • I think this deal works out better from cashrewards when available. Last time the plan was discounted to $250 and then there was something like $90 cashback. It was for new connections so you had to get a $2 Sim elsewhere and then connect through.

    • CB is hit and miss for some people, I never had issue with my cashback last year but it took a while to be released to my account and you have to pay upfront first with 🤞 it goes through

  • 6000 mins std international calls to Zone 1 and 800 mins to Zone 2 plus 50 std international SMS

How can I find out which countries are included?

  • "…TARGET 10% discount and 3000 flybuys bonus points for $80"
Will you get the discount and flybuy points if you buy SIM cards? Last time the Coles counter said no.

    • +1

$80 transaction excludes purchases of all gift cards, iTunes cards, charity items/donations, tobacco and tobacco related products
This is from their promotion T&C, not sure sim card will fall into gift card categories anyway

    • I just bought 2 SIMs with 10% discount. Didn't have 3000 flybuys bonus points

    • The SIM card is considered a gift card so I doubt it. I bought an amaysom starter kit earlier this week and the ten percent was not available on that one.

      • 10% applied to my sim card yesterday but 3200 flybuys bonus points not yet show up

        • Ok. So if I get a 365 day Optus som next Monday and I have the Coles 10 % offer it should work.

          • @BargainBenno: ends Tuesday next week so Monday should be fine. My 3200 flybuys bonus points has been credited

        • I had spend $130 and get 5200 points offer. Bought this yesterday and received 5200 points today. Thanks mate!

  • Can you use Apple Watch plan with this?

    • Apple watch number sharing generally requires a post paid plan from the big 3.

      • I wonder why they force you onto a post paid plan. I know a few elderly people with prepaid who use their Apple watch as health device and dislike the idea of having to bring their phone along all the time 😞 I don't know what to suggest to them.

        • Same issue here - work for an aged care org and get asked about apple/samsung watch all the time. Tangerine is an option but it’s still not particularly cheap im afraid.

  • Does this come with the $5 5gb / day roaming?

    • no, only recent postpaid plans do. Prepaid flex plus is $5 for 1 gb

  • MSG me if you have any complaints about Optus prepaid. Looking to start something

    • what's your complaint?

      • +1

No complaints. Only looking to start something.

  • I am on Optus prepaid monthly expiring tonight
I hope i can port out to coles $2 prepaid or similar today and port back in to Optus tomorrow on this?

    • i believe it should work.. port ins are usually quick unless there's some kind of maintenance going on. I've heard it can take longer on weekends but most of the time its fine.

      • Yea! I tried Coles one weekend and it took a whole week to activate. Was activated the following week

I will have to look for a different option

  • Is it pretty straightforward to transfer my number?

  • Do these have an expiry date? Can they be activated in say six months time?

    • +1

I think it should be fine.

  • Awesome deal thanks OP

  • Anyone know if we can convert this to esim?

    • +1

Ofcourse yes. Visit nearby Optus showroom and request an eSim.

  • Does this support visual voicemail?

  • Since using it, I feel that Optus is very suitable for the area where I live.

  • Could you use coles voucher to pay for this?

  • Not sure what happened, bought this just now and some flybuys offer of $100 came in at the register.
    Ended up only $99

    • Did you have any flybuys points/credit on your account?.

      • I do, but it says reward on the receipt and none of my points got used (I'll check again in a few days)

  • Is this 10% different from Coles saver monthly discount?
