Customer service is usually good and then send out new ones immediately but that's low quality solar too
…except you can't find the lantern button 'cos it's dark!
The last solar sensor light I bought from Aldi didn't last 2 months before dying.
Same. Avoid
Similis. Caveat emptor
Aldi is what we say in Latin, a dorkus, malorkus.
What did you say when you returned under warranty?
That it's broken. they didn't ask anything after that
thanks feedback
I have a solar motion floodlight from Aldi that's lasted at least 5-6 years and still works quite well. They're not all e-waste. YMMV
(edit: Infidel below has the same light - apparently it wasn't a fluke).
Happy with past Aldi Solar Shed Lights
Lasted 5 - 8+ years
BUT past experience isn't a good guide!
Aldi suppliers source from different factories. Quality control isn't great!
Will likely buy a few to try.
More if discounted further if doesn't sell out.
Easy return within 60d
Was the battery and solar panel seperate?
My Aldi and kogan lights are still going great 4 years later.
Key is either:
Don't buy solar lights with the battery built in. Makes no sense having a battery getting hot. Dry out and die in a year.
If you have an all in one. Put it just in the shade from direct sun (ie. Under an eave). Best to install it in winter sun (so sun just touches it). But in summer the sun will be overhead and the panel will be in the shade.
Still more than enough glare to charge it.
As for being in a hot shed..just as bad. Mount it lower in a shed.
Isn't the point of the battery being built in, to let it charge during the day and then it an come on when sensing motion over the nighttime?
I mean the solar panel is attached seperate with a wire vs fully self contained
Self contained will never work in Australia in direct sun. .Best case for them, as above. Mount under eave.
Even this shed light, won't last long in an uninsulated shed if mounted up high where all the heat is.
Key points.. heat kills lithium quickly
@tunzafun001: Thanks, this is really helpful. If I mounted this along the side of my house (north facing) where there's a walkway, it sounds like I would just want to put it where the unit itself is in the shade, but the solar panel is high where it can reach the light?
@keeperofthegood: Yep, these type are great. Panel in the sun, unit out the sun.
You don't even need full sun. I have our security light solar panel still under the eave, as you don't want fully charged batteries above 30C (lithium dies much faster if it's hot or fully charged…both together is all bad).
Ideal placement is just under an eave, where it gets full sun in winter, no direct sun in summer. Then it also gets rain protection. Should then get 3000 odd cycles out of it (just short of 10 years). When it dies, just replace the battery.
Dyson 'dead' packs are full of excellent cells that will run for 4 nights without a charge if needed.
@tunzafun001: Truly so helpful - thank you so much! Going to snag a couple of these from the big green shed!
True , I bought Garden Solar Lights from Aldi , I had to Throw it in the Bin after 6 months . Aldi asked for Receipt - Bank statement this and that , it was busy weekend . I didn’t bother ! Never again !!
Agree, for anything without a specific warranty their "customer service" is absolute garbage. Obstructive and ignorant of consumer law, undoubtedly acting as instructed by ALDI Australia. Went through multiple back and forths about proof of purchase (items - two hand watering guns - were marked ALDI with a manufacture date), even demanded I send them a full unredacted transaction list from my bank account which I declined, pointing out the obvious. In the end they said the local store manager would respond. He did with their illegal "90? day limit" return policy, even though I'd told them about ACL statutory warranty. Was close to lodging a complaint with the ACCC but decided I'd had enough. Both guns broke at the same point, one had about 4 months use, the other a week (bought two at the same time).
Years ago I bought some of their XXXhour LED light globes. None lasted anywhere near the claimed hours. Junk, like ALDI recchargeable batteries . Have never bought any electronic/electrical item from them since.
100 lumens doesn't seem like much. Picked up a Bunnings Click clearance cheapie which is (allegedly) 700 lumens for $8.
Come to think of it all my solar floodlight style ones have been Bunnings Clearances over the years lol.
Can anyone recommend some decent-quality solar lights?
I have these Hoselink ones in my garden. https://www.hoselink.com.au/products/solar-path-light-motion…
Have been flawless for the last 2 years. Bright, and would happily buy again. I would expect their other products to be on par.
I'll recommend. For right use case, a small shed etc, then 100 lumen is fine as an adequate light to see what's what. I've had one in the shed operating for 2 yrs now no issue. Will buy a couple more as they are cheaper than eBay etc.
I have a different Solar lantern thats prob been sitting in the same spot for over 10 years at my inlaws house. I installed it and it always surprises me that its still going strong. It was just a cheapy too.
Aldi Solar Shed Light still working after 8 years. Used every day.
Light is inside front door of house, charged from solar panel outside. (Extended cable to panel.)
Turns on when go near front door from inside.
IP44 rated
Similar to these - light is NOT waterproof, only splashproof. Filled with water in rain! Aldi replaced.
Used under cover outside. Had a matching one outside front door, under eaves.
Bought a stack discounted.to $8ea.
All others had 3.7V 900mAh batteries fail around 5 years. Couldn't bother replacing… (with mobile batteries)
Ran 1 in kitchen off USB plug pack. Handy to turn on automatically when walk in room. Bright enough to see around kitchen at night to make a drink.
But that doesn't mean these will last that long!!
Wait for Bunnings to price match.
Over 50 left late today at local Aldi!
Expect price reductionđź’°
Still full price & plenty of stock near me.
Bought 2 to use inside & outside front door. Lights are under cover, panels attached outside.
Work great to find keys, lights up hallway & path on way in/out.
Basically same as old one but better looking.
Light stays on if there is any movement & remains on ~90 sec afterwards.
15 of those still on shelf at local store. Full Price.
Stock finder shows sold out…
Aldi solar stuff doesn't last imo. A USB rechargeable lantern from Kmart in the shed might be more helpful if you can handle pushing a button when you need light
