Decided to try and compare this to a SFF setup for homelabbing. I'm going to use a 5825u based system for comparison. Very different systems but often used for the same purpose in the end.

Recently picked up a couple GMKtec systems with 5825u and 64GB ram each. Price came out to ~$600 a pop.

The SFF setup has roughly the same processing power, the same RAM, used a probably around a quarter of the power. It has no storage and costs a couple hundred more. The plus side is it's smaller, much less noisy and uses all new parts.

All things considered I think this is a pretty good buy if you don't mind the noise, size and second hand parts. There's a lot of grunt and storage offered.

    Time to selfhost OzBargain

  • Can you guys include Server OS for a cost ?

    • Sorry, we don't sell Windows Server licenses.

  • Is the board and are the PSUs standard or more so proprietary to cannibalise for use in a rack mount case?

    • +2

      Very much proprietary.

  • +1

    Can this run Crysis ?

  • Should I choose the H730 or the HBA330 if I was to use it as a hyper v server?

    • Windows doesn’t natively support ZFS and is quite limited in alternative options, so the hardware raid one.

Even with windows server (which is priced per a core so would cost a ton with this), software raid is annoying.

      • you could use Storage Spaces in Windows. works alright for me.

    • I'd get the HBA330 IT one if I were you to be flexible.

  • Are these able to take a GPU at all?

    • They have a lane for it by the looks of the MB, but it might only be running at PCI 3.0 x1, this isn’t a huge issue for workstations because they mainly process jobs then only use the lane for communicating results.

Also the PSU likely doesn’t have the plugs for a GPU

      • There are five PCIe slots, one 16x, two 8x, two 4x. So if you get a GPU that fits within the PCIe powered only spec (75W), you can add one… anything bigger is not really necessary, unless you're planning to run some heavy CUDA stuff.

        • +1

anything bigger is not really necessary

          How dare you.

    • can, but you'll need the specific cable for connecting the psu to the gpu and you'll need two cpus installed to make use of that 16x slot

  • How loud are these and what ports does MB have internally?

SAS or SATA drives? Edit: says sas, would it support sata converters?

  • -2

Can we get more discounts if we order without any of the drives? tempting though… running an older but lower power consuming HP ML10 v2 with Xeon E3-1275L v3 currently fully boarded and disked out.

  • @ACTnetworks just confirming, the cpu upgrade is for a second cpu installed, and just wondering if you also sell rails? if not i've looked around as well. thanks.

    • Yes, selecting the “Dual CPU” option adds a second CPU.

We don’t have any rails for these. While Dell technically offered a rack conversion kit for the T440, we never see it. All the units we get are always in the tower configuration.

Asrock apu are impossible to beat, unless you have a pc laying around it's hard to buy either this or a apu.

Asrock apu are like the difference between a raspberry pi and a work horse, but some API are not cheap because of the size, cost and one system setup.

But this is good if not technically minded.

    Great for the following:
    - Heating your house
    - Boat anchor
    - Hmmm.. out of ideas.

Hell no! These are power hungry for residential use.

For comparison, a Tesla model 3 holds about 54kwh capacity battery giving a 448kms range.

These dual redundant 495watts + 75watts psu per day consumption is 13.68kwh which almost 1/4th of a Model3.. YMMW ;)

    • You're doing well if you're stressing two PSUs to 100% capacity 24/7

  • My home lab is running on 2x E5-2640 v4. Performance wise, are they about the same or is the Xeon Gold 6140 faster?

  • Really solid deal. I already have a homelab otherwise I'd be all over this

  • Does these server come with iDRAC Enterprise license?

    • Yes, iDRAC Enterprise license installed.

  • if play safe that means use 12 tb and have 12 tb as backup, that's for 1 year. $990 seems too much.
Online storage mypikpak is around $90 for the 1st 1 year for 10Tb.
hmmm … unless it can last 8 years else wont worth buying.

Very very few people need this monster at home. Don't waste your money and waste more to keep it running if you don't know what you are getting into

i've been running a t440 at home for about a year now so if anyone has any questions i can probably help

(if only i had this deal back then, looking for a LFF chassis in aus was a pain)

    • im waiting for jonsbo n5 to hit other retailers than PLE. hoping to build my retirement mother of all killer nas. fully load that 12drive bay.

      • ooo, jonsbo n5 looks nutty, though i would be somewhat worried about having all those drives close together

(im a little bit too addicted to having dell idrac available as well)

        • Looking to simplify/detechify life. Just decluttered/removed 3 42u racks from garage full of decommissioned servers. Wife is very much happy. Took a month to get used to silence.

Yes the challenge keeping drives cool… And looking for mb with amt/oob remote access.

    • How loud? Can it sit in your bedroom?

      • +1

i can't even sleep in my bedroom with my own pc running 😂

the tower servers are designed to sit at least within an office and not be too loud in that scenario so take that as you will

really wouldn't recommend sleeping in the same room with it

edit: if you can sleep with a medium load pc on in the same room, you might be able to survive sleeping with the server at idle maybe, but definitely not under load

        • Thanks. I usually get pissed off by the mini pc that runs its fan when heavily loaded in a wardrobe on the other side of the house.

          Strong pass.

  • The T440 or the T630 they have for sale? whats the better pick considering i probably have 20TB i can throw at this thing tomorrow.

    • depends on use, but generally t630 if you have a lot of drives to put in and need the pcie lanes, or t440 if you just want something with a CPU and iDRAC that's a little bit more recent (and maybe less on power usage)

note that the t440 needs a second CPU installed for the x16 slot to be enabled - important if you want a GPU installed

  • How loud is this?

  • This or upgrading to AMD Ryzen 9 5950X

  • My home-lab is an i5-6500T with 32GB.

I could use more RAM maybe.

  • For anyone considering this for Plex or Jellyfin - The CPU does not have Quicksync, so it wont be able to do hardware transcoding.

  • Do you have any supported or compatable SPF+ 10Gb NICs for this?
    Thanks.

    • what on earth are you using your homelab for lol

      • Most likely home education, because their workplace is too cheap to have a test lab to use.

      • A single 15 year old HDD maxes out gigabit….

  • Would this system be any good running an LLM for home AI? CPU seems to be a bit low-end, lots of RAM is nice… anyone else thinking of it for AI home lab server? Can CPU be upgraded? Threadripper?

    • You really need a decent GPU, not a CPU for this stuff.

As it doesn't have cables for a GPU, you would be out of luck.

  • Really surprised people bought these..

the cpu included in the 6140 which is a 140W TDP part.. not offically supported on this platform..

the maximum supported is 105W TDP parts..

it would seem… that the orignal CPU(s), have been removed and the 6140 installed..(given these are avaialbe cheaply)
    https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=6140+cpu&_sacat=0&_f…

I could not find any referrence to the T440 ever being supplied with the 6140.., nor people upgrading successfully without any issues to this particular CPU..

its the T640 and higher that support the higher TDP parts..

Good luck to anyone who bought this.. definitely cheap.. but the potential cooling issues, would make me highly concerned..

  • Seems to be back in stock. This time marked as Grade B.
