whats a good price then
there are no sub 12tb deals below $30/tb that i can find
I've always considered $27/tb to be the pricier end of a bargain.
prices havent really come down last few years. thats the problem. the main deals ive seen are just refurbished drives
Yep, and I bought two of these from Amazon in early 2023 for $259, and while they’re now listed there at $295, it kind of tells me that they’ve stopped innovating at the lower end of the market.
There's less demand for HDD nowadays.
yea my benchmark remains the 4TB IronWolf hdds I bought back in 2023 at $125 each
weren't refurb 16tb going for similar price with a 3 year warranty recently?
I got the 18TB IronWolfs new for $279 on amazon 2 years ago, doesn't mean you can get it anymore.
Man I wished I bought more what a deal.
they're probably talking about some drives from eastdigital and the like. 16tb refurb/recert drives go for around this price nowadays.
I grabbed the 16TBs for ~$250…boy do I still dream about that, waiting to see the likes again. Not sure why I didn't grab the 18TBs.
im sorry wtf how did i miss that
whats the closest its been? one of my drives just died
$33.63 / TB
I’ve been outta the game for storage for a while now, but absolutely sick of all the subscriptions.
What’s a good ballpark for $/TB?
Below $30
Any good NAS systems to get right now? Was eyeing either the Synology DS225+ or Asustor Lockerstor 2 for the same price.
I've got a DS423+ from a previous deal, I probably will not be buying Synology again, they're software locking a lot of stuff and for upcoming models, including trying to force you to use their branded harddrive etc and have removed heaps of features lately…
Yep, much better value and hardware from the newer brands now and no gatekeeping of drives.
I also have a DS423+ and I like it. I did have to remove some Synology bullsh*t like needing to use a script to bypass them preventing me from putting in an SSD as storage. Aside from that it works as expected.
They were ok before but going forward they are changing
Their prices have also sky rocketed
The spec is impressive.
@skillet: shame it doesn't have the a9 hx pro 370 in it, but i think that would lift the price a few hundred as well.
but yeah, thats a damn decent piece of kit. I'll likely be looking at BF sales if not before. (unless they release a new model with the aforementioned CPU/NPU, the minisinformaiton one has it, but not with the extent of the drives in this thing)
now back to this post, we really need better drive sales, I'm looking for 6 to fill that. 16GB exos are around the 400 mark if you get the right external drives… bit of a gamble though. and of course the memory… need a few 96GB ECC sales to happen.
Gonna be a few k to set one up nicely.
@wisc: LOL Synology /QNAP fanboi butthurt, had to go though and neg each comment LOL. apple fanboi also by any chance? brand name matters OK!
How mang bays and what services do you plan to run?
Aoostar WTR Pro N150 or ryzen variant
Minisforum N5
Aoostar WTR Pro Max
Other options
Terramaster
DIY with old pc
OS
Unraid
TrueNAS
Proxmox
xpenology arc loader
Casa/Zima OS
Open media vault
I reckon I'm going to wait for the WTR Max to hit Amazon, hopefully land a good deal for Black Friday.
I've been having a lot of fun with a homelab setup on a busted old laptop, keep to move onto something more capable and get off even more cloud services and subscriptions!
@Pab23q: Nice! I don’t need it immediately, willing to wait for Black Friday, hopefully with some deals + Cashback!
I feel like 2 bays are enough for me even though everyone says to get 4. Just for like file storage mostly, maybe plex and pihole, something like that. I do also have a mini PC which I could use to run the services instead of the NAS (I think?), so I don't even know if I need something that strong.
N150 will be plenty then.
4 bays gives you option for raid1 or mirrored pairs for redundancy where as 2 bay only has mirrored.
100% agree so much better than rip off Synology qnap pre built crap .. they are such a rip off…. Ok for plug and play, but that's about it,
Was eyeing either the Synology DS225+
I've read Synology are now blocking third-party drives, which is one of the reasons I'm building my own with an Aoostar (currently have an DS918).
Not sure if it'll affect what you're planning but restricting my options like that is a walk-away for me
Synology DiskStation DS225+ 2 Bay NAS, Supports SATA HDD, Celeron J4125, 2GB RAM, GbE, 2.5GbE, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen1
$599.. what a rip
Aoostar WTR Pro N150 for around $375 add NVME and DDR4 stick.
4x bays, 2x 2.5gbe, USB A, HDMI, display port
Yeah its crazy…only considering Synology because its easier to get into being a completely newbie. I don't know if I want to invest time learning how to set it all up myself.
@PlushyAngel: It's not that much more difficult than installing windows.
Casa and Zima OS are designed to be very beginner friendly. One press app installs, easy to use GUI and more. Definitely check those out. They have online demo's available on their site.
Xpenology is basically Synology DSM.
@PlushyAngel: NAS is something you set and forget and use it for its services and not the interface. If you want the set part to be a learning curve consider diy. Otherwise weigh in software stability and security update frequency when comparing prices. set is not just installing bunch of packages but making sure the security is there too. NAS systems are connected to internet 24/7
I don’r like how synology are locking down drives with newer systems. There should be atleast an approved set of third party drives from day 1 but it’s not the case. I’m assuming its because sg / wd doesn’t want to pay licensing fees to synology 🤣.
@kaleidoscope: Yeah that's fair, but I thought Synology were also known to be good in terms of stability and security update frequency 🤣.
I also don't enjoy the fact that they are locking down the drives to their own brands.
Was a good price for the WTR , as none of the sellers were remotely near that price. Wasn't in a position to order and ensure I was around for a delivery.
Now looking at a diy approach, n150 board (6sata+2vmme), plus a N2 jonsbo is not far off the price though, excluding a psu.
Where are you seeing the WTR Pro for 375? The deal seems expired?
@PlushyAngel: It's gone back up now but is frequently on sale following the usual Aliexpress cycles.
Unless you're commercial and need the warranty/support contracts - Just DIY.
A mATX build, or even a mid tower build - You can have a huge amount of drives, and TrueNAS is free. You can even use SAS drives with a cheap af SAS controller card. There's a million old PCs out there to be had for $50, and they'll all be way more capable than some crappy Synology POS.
Aren't we at ~$25/tb, what's the special here?
Nas grade drives… Run better and more reliable.
But I'm 100% with you.. way too expensive.. should be closer to 25 per tb
where can i get close to 25/tb? i need an urgent replacement for my nas
should be, doesn't mean is unfortunately. LOL.
also at this size, not much of a chance to shuck drives either.
hdd are one of those things i feel should be cheaper for larger drives, as i cant imagine (besides the number of spindles) that they are so much harder to manufacture. -but then again, what would i know.
East digital
The higher grade drives are the ones with 5yr warranty ie IronWolf NAS PRO. This deal is for a 3yr warranty drive. There's the lowest grade drive with SMR tech you don't want those.
current price for many retailers
those with free shipping (e.g. CC, Scorptec) are good options
Will Amazon do another heavy deal on Nas drives like before? So I can upgrade my storage.
Paging @Nostradamus…
I'm sure there's already a quatrain about it.
A$24.26 A$582 24 TB Internal 3.5" HDD New
Mindful some errors. This one is NOT new.
Amazon AU isn't ever going to have the best HDD deals IMO.
Hard drive prices have stubbornly not changed much over the last say 4-5 years now, or even longer.
Should be cheaper over time due to change in technology unless big inflation like after covid.
Does anyone know if this is good for a NVR? Cheers,
Get a WD Purple or Purple Pro
Amazon has the Seagate Ironwolf 12TB for $363 which is a better price per TB. Unless I am misunderstanding something from the Amazon listing?
Historically Amz us/jp/uk/gr have been cheaper. It's cost vs convinence if something goes wrong and also local warranty vs overseas warranty. Some people worry about couriers handle individual drives, DOA etc.
""Manufacturer warranties may not apply in Australia and manufacturer service options may not be available in Australia."
Listed in their terms
Well that answered my question before I even asked it. Thanks.
How is this different from the Ironwolf 8tb available recently from Amazon (linked below)? The two drives have different model numbers but I can't see an obvious difference
Same, sometimes they have different firmware revisions.
These ones are "slow" 5400rpm vs the "fast" 7200rpm ones from that Amazon link.
Ignorantly… What do you guys use the storage space for?
when some legislation takes effect in December
geez, I really feel dumb now…
illegal soon to store your own data?
I wouldn't say that too loudly in Australia
Thanks! Ill look into these.
Linux ISOs
Filth.
Do I need to buy this in order to use Immich?
Do you already have storage?
No I don't. I watched some YouTube videos about setting up Immich to replace Google photos and got really confused.
Id assumed I need some sort of external storage space to be able to set up Immich but any suggestions or instructions most welcome cheers
You need to have a server to run it first
- a NAS
- old PC
- mini PC
Simple option would be to run Zima OS and then use the app store for immich.
Then you need storage.
It's very overwhelming to begin with.
If you have an old PC I think it would be best to start there and messing with some stuff to get your head around how it all works. I suggest using Unraid its pretty easy to use and still gives you control over things for when you get more comfortable. They have a 30-day trial which you can extend for 15 days, twice. They also have a deal starting tomorrow (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/917975) you could try the trial then pick up a starter license and see where you're at in a year and upgrade if need be.
It's very rewarding but requires patience and enjoying the process of tinkering with things. Good luck!
Kinda seems like a bad deal but appears hdd prices have seriously stagnated in the last 5 years…
In 2021 i got 4x normal 8tb barracudas $225 each, they have been running basically non stop since then all 4 have 36000+ hours without any issues of any kind all SMART info shows good status. I don't think i would pay extra for 'higher' grade drives personally.
East Digital has 14TB's for the same price, and 16TB's for not much more.
I urge anyone buying drives for NAS applications to look outside AUS retail because that's what most of us are doing and they work just as good, come with warranty, ship locally etc. I recently bought a stack of 28TB recerts from Amazon for ~$22/TB and they work perfectly, I have ~30 drives currently in use and all were purchased from east digital or amazon overseas, across 6 years and not a single issue.
most things are cheaper outside Australia unfortunately, even in shipping on occasion
Wowzers. Any chance of a link or a screenshot for those 28TB recerts? Just see what to look for.
they're always in stock from what I've seen, they're just the 30+TB HAMR's that have a dead platter and are recerted as 28tb from what I understand - same way lower tier CPU's are just Ryzen 9 / I9's that didn't make the cut
https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Recertified-Exos-Internal-Dri…
Refurbs. Second hand
Given hard drives have a limited lifespan, is suggest it depends what your doing with them.
Have good backups.
The east digital ones atm are unfortunately, I've only purchased new or recerts from them. The Seagate Recerts coming out atm are unreal value for money and are brand new
link please?
Man I bought one full price and thought I could use it as an external drive. Then I learned you need all this NAS stuff and perished immediately.
3.5" powered USB dock but usually 2.5" for USB powered
Thank you so much, I never knew these existed!
Why would you think that a bare internal drive would be immediately usable as an external drive? Did you think they just put USB ports directly into bare drives?
Just buy a 3.5" USB enclosure? Here's an example: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/205607504385
yes
I need to buy a couple of 16tb ones but the new NT001 version. Cheapest I can find is centrecom at $36/TB which is making me feel reluctant. It only got to $33.5/TB on prime day with two month wait!
There’s gotta be a cheaper way.
Seeing all the nvme deals recently with 2tb = 300, 4tb = 400, 8tb = 900, made me forget that $33/tb for an HDD is still pricey
