Was looking for a cheap replacement smart watch, my original from Dec 2023 [Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Active] recently started to bootloop, unable to fix it for now,

Any reason this won't be suitable for my 68yo mum who wants to track her steps?

    • +6

Probably not the cheapest for that purpose as this does a fair bit more than that. But it will certainly track steps.

    • +7

This will do exactly that, along with sleep tracking as well, pretty solid unit especially at this price point, I wouldn't class it as a no name brand either, I did look at some other cheaper units on amazon and the brand names I've never heard of, some of those units can be obtained for under $30

My grandad is 75, uses a Garmin and does 5 ~ 10km park runs all the time 🚶

Age is just a number 🙌

        • +13

          Mate that's motivation.

I wanna be like that when I'm 75

          • +2

@montorola: Yep his the fittest in his age group, these are the events organised by Medibank private.

            • +9

@Gomo: If you are talking about parkrun, they are organised by volunteers, free for all.
Medibank is one of the sponsors.

              • @bght007: Yes (big Parkrun fan here). Free for all. If you happen to have Medibank Priv cover you can get points for doing Parkrun as part of the LiveBetter scheme and swap the points for stuff.

      • +1

Because doctor appointments just start depending on vibes, right?

        • +2

I just meant that it feels like their time was running out. Hell, I'm not that age and I'm already feeling like time is running out.

    • -6

Tracking steps is a health lie the tech companies sold us.

      • +13

If it builds good habits, then it's worth it, even if the actual number is arbitrary.

        • -5

Steps is moderate exercise at best. 10 minutes of strenuous exercise is better than 10k steps.

          • +15

@rainbowunicorn: But 10k steps is better than 5k steps and both are better than nothing.

If you're doing HIIT, then yes, you probably don't need to worry about your steps. However they both serve a purpose.

          • +8

            @rainbowunicorn: Over simplification.

10k steps can be strenuous exercise, depending on the person. Telling a 60 year old to lift some weights for the first time in his life is reckless advice.

            • @Wonderfool: From the negs, I can see steps is a precious topic to some.
@Erwark Sure something is better than nothing but similarly 5-10k steps isn't going to overcome a sedentary lifestyle.

@Wonderfool Counting steps is the over simplification of healthy habits. It doesn't account for any other factors, how fast or slow, heart rate, were other parts of your body used.
I never told a 60yo to lift some weights? Unsure where that came from.

Strenuous exercise is to get the heart rate to high, approx 70%+ Max HR. This can be achieved from many different exercises, some that would barely clock a single step. Of course getting to that level is a different journey for everyone, but the health benefits of 5-10 minutes of elevated heart rate is far better than taking 5-10k steps at a casual pace.

Example. An average person doing daily tasks, going to work, walking at the super market, catching a train etc. Is going to accumulate 7-10k steps a day. This does not in any regard capture if the person is living a healthy lifestyle. Those steps may not have benefited your heart at all.
Comparing to, getting hr above 70% Max for 5-10 minutes which actually improves cardiovascular health significantly.

I think steering away from steps and encouraging elevated heart rate would provide real benefits to individuals, especially the elderly. Coincidentally this watch can also measure that.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. I won't be answering any further questions.

              • +4

                @rainbowunicorn:

5-10k steps isn't going to overcome a sedentary lifestyle

You're fighting a straw man because not a single person here has suggested this, nor have I ever seen anyone ever try to argue that increased steps are a replacement for exercise.

This isn't a "precious topic", you're just making things up to argue against

              • +1

@rainbowunicorn: You're opening a can of worms here.
You bang on about 70% of your max HR like this is a static that is easy to calculate. I previously worked as an Exersise Physiologist and the arbitrary 220 less your age is so inaccurate compared to controlled Max V02 and lactate tollerance tests, that we used to determine training zones.
I encourage everybody to just get out and be active. Use there tools as guides and more importantly listen to your body.

              • @rainbowunicorn: It's not that steps is a precious topic, but rather that more athletic people are too focussed on aerobic training zones or whatever new buzz word sport tech company uses.

It's really not that complicated. People need to elevate their heart rate more than they are at resting to be healthy, for hopefully 30 minutes a day. Steps can achieve that for the less athletic people, while not posing a risk to a person's health.

If you need more than 5k steps, then you're already sufficiently healthy enough to not need general guidelines.

              • @rainbowunicorn: The point you seen to be missing is it is about getting people moving…. I know someone who is lucky to do 2000 steps a day not obese, but if they had a target of 10,000 steps a day it would benefit them , especially in later years….Strength training for the elderly has enormous benefits, I have as bloke at my old gym 85 lifting weights not a body builder by any means but good weight range and flexibility and mobility. It's not just about heart rate being elevated , circulation getting joints moving plays a major role….

My father-in-law is 99 up till his early nineties was moving around quite well and quite active we would have to stop him from climbing trees to cut branches , within 5 years he started walking less and less, he has lost a lot of strength from not moving around and now walks hunched over and has difficulty walking 20 steps……Use it or lose it…..The more active you are , the more mobility you will have…Just dropping by…..I hope this helps or motivates even one person.

          • @rainbowunicorn: You're thinking as if everyone is young and can actually do strenuous excersise. Yes, harder work outs is obviously better but the older you are the less sustainable that is.
When you get older and you knees hurt and your back randomly hurts because you slept on the wrong side, steps and moderate exercise but compensated by doing it longer is all you have.

      • +4

Moving being better than not moving isn't a lie 👍

  • +2

This is about the price they are in the Mi stores in Malaysia and Singapore and probably elsewhere in Asia, so quite a good deal. I got this and fairly happy with it. It tracks how long you have slept and steps etc. Wore it on an overseas trip after buying it in Malaysia.

    • -3

Do u need to wear it to track sleep?

      • +8

        Of course.

You don't need to charge it once a day like full smart watches so you just leave it on. Charge like once a week in under an hour.

      • +5

Genuinely interested how you thought it would potentially track sleep if you’re not wearing it?

        • +1

About 10 years ago I used a phone app to track my sleep and all I need to do is put it on the bed beside me and it can track sleep based on my movement

        • +1

microphone while it is charging! my pixel phone used to do this. I honestly dont want to wear a watch it while sleeping hence the ask.

  • +5

I've had the Redmi Watch 2 Lite for some years now and it's done a fantastic job. The only downside is the battery is starting to wear out and I'll only get 4-5 days us out of it (used to be around 7-10).

Does this watch 5 active also have GPS?

    • +3

No GPS according to the specifications section of the page

  • +8

If you want a GPS, the Redmi Watch 5 Lite is what you want.

    • Seems to be double the price of this at the limited listings I can find

      • $69 on Amazon

        • That would be the Watch 5. The Lite is 78. Both from Amazon Japan

          • +3

@justausername: The Watch 5 listing is the Watch 5 Lite. Has the same specs.

    • says TFT screen in description?

      • The Redmi Watch 5 on Amazon from Amazon Japan? The description says AMOLED.

  • +1

    Does this have fall detection

  • +1

does it need a phone to function? Can a child use it without needing a phone? mainly for fitness tracking purpose.

    • +1

You want the Redmi Watch 5 lite as it has GPS

    • Most cheap watches need to be connected to the phone via Bluetooth to be able to make and receive calls, like this one. You need a watch that supports LTE and check if your telecom provider supports watches. There are separate plans for this purpose.

  • So this will run for 18 days between charges? Hard to believe. My Garmin Vivosmart with a monochrome screen and quick screen off lasts four days at most.

    • +6

My Miband lasts about a month.

    • +1

Not uncommon with these fitness trackers. They use so little juice because they're quite simple. I'd bank on ~14 days if you're turning on features.

    • +2

My Huawei Fit 4 Pro lasts 10 days, and that's with a screen and feature set close to an Apple Watch

    • +1

Food for thought… maybe it’s just the Garmin that sucks. I’m looking into the Mi range

      • +2

Apple too is pathetic for battery & price

    • I've got Redmi Watch 4 and it needs recharging after about 2.5 - 3 weeks.
I don't use it for phone calls.

    • Garmin 955 - tracks HR 24/7,sleep, GPS turned off lasts around 14 hours after charge.

    • That’s Garmin

  • +6

Coming from a Galaxy Watch user, these things are a LOT of tech for the price woah. Makes me wonder how much manufacturing costs are for these

  • Hmm this or spend a bit more for Amazfit Bip 6?

  • Showing $38 for new user but keeps getting error when I click on place order

    • I believe it's only the silver not black that is at that price

  • +1

can any smart watch voice activate google assistant or be used to dictate short notes like in google keep or a note pad?

    • +1

This is an activity tracker and it has no real support for Google Assistant, nor is there a plugin that makes it work with Google Assistant or Gemini. It works with Alexa only.

  • Are these too big for a primary aged kid? Mine is desperate for one like Dad (Garmin). Seems a cheap ticket out…

    • +1

Check the YouTube clip review I added at the bottom of the post, I think in my opinion its the perfect size ✌️

  • Hi, does anyone know a of cheap watch that I can use for Google maps walking directions? Have a big trip coming up and looking to not have to keep referring to my phone screen all the time when walking in big cities. Kinda want something that brings up the map on the screen?

    • Any Android Wear watch can do it. TicWatch E3 for e.g is one of the cheapest you can get, starting at $151 on Kogan with a FIRST membership.

It's a pretty old model though from 2021 and I think the Galaxy Watch 5/6 is probably a better option with a faster processor. Those might cost you $200-ish

      • Good to know. Thanks for the reply

  • In my opinion Redmi Watch 5 Lite is better. Just based on youtube reviews. Have one.

  • I bought this watch when I was in HK. Battery life was never an issue for me, but I wish I bought one with GPS instead.

    • What's the use case for having GPS in the watch vs carrying your phone with you?

      • Exactly lots of places that I've walked I've always had my phone with me which has provided GPS

      • For using the inbuilt fitness tracker when out and about (as opposed to using Strava and draining the battery on your phone while using the phone's GPS). Or you could just go running without your phone and still enable tracking to occur.

  • Damn oos! I was just about to pull the trigger earlier but got distracted. Stupid work 😏

    • +2

Should be plenty other sellers on aliexpress with the same product just make sure that they aren't listening a rip-off version.

  • the display on both the Lite (LCD) and Active (OLED) are slightly vertically off centre. they have a bigger bezel at the bottom compared to the top.

if you are bothered by this I recommend the standard Redmi Watch 5.

    • I believe the Lite is the AMOLED and the Active is the LCD

      • my bad you are right. Active still has the weird bigger bottom bezel though.
