  • Anyone in Melb with this ISP? Any concerns?

    • +1

Having it for couple of months. Nothing much to complain except,

      • Had few dropouts initially but stable after that.
      • You don’t have much control on your connection like running tests, reset port etc. like Leaptel. Speed is almost always at the plan level.
      • I was with them for a month, had drop outs each morning which of course screwed with the smart home devices, they’ve also charged me an extra month and are holding the funds until next month when they will apparently refund me for the internet I don’t use with them during that time.
Also my grandma had so many issues where they kept saying they don’t have her address or something even though it got updated 5 times.
Also they don’t have an email support

        • Yeah, I agree, felt the same when my connection had drop outs. Its nice when you don’t have connectivity issues. But if you do, it’s horrible to deal with this guys.

    • Very happy , four months so far 👍
3064 for area of use .

      • planning to switch what latency time do you usually get ookla speedtest will give all the details of your connection

    • +1

Once a month, my internet would go out for a few days because of the static IP I had requested from them—every month, without fail. I had to switch away, and they were awful during the process of changing, too. I would 100% recommend not signing up with them; it's not worth it. The runaround I got from support in India each time I had to contact them was hours and hours wasted.

    • I’ve been with them for about 6 weeks, I will stay for my promo bonus but I’ve gotten about 20 or 30 drop outs in the time, but annoying but comes back on quickly.

    • signed up today. Connected within 5 minutes of sign up. Seems like they have a local routing server in VIC. Whatismyip.com shows me as being in Drouin (before router restart) and Officer after restart. Ping to AARNet melbourne server/ Telstra windsor server is 5ms. 108mbps down/18.77mbs up.

    • did a traceroute to an opendns server IP. Look like they use vocus backhaul with a Melbourne PoP.

      Tracing route to dns.umbrella.com [208.67.222.222]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Ah good to know Southern Phone are upgrading us to 500/50 in September. I asked their chat bot about this a week or two ago and got a very stern "we haven't made any decisions yet" response.

I've been with Southern Phone (HFC NBN in Melbourne) since the start of the year and have been quite happy with them.

    • Yeh pretty happy with the free upgrade! I called them about a month ago and escalated to a supervisor to ask about the free speed upgrade and she said she had no idea what their plans were, but to look out for an email or website update about it.

    • +1

I signed up a week ago with southern phone assuming that all nbn plans would get it across all providers, didnt even bother to check or think otherwise! But glad its now confirmed.

    • I suppose all NBN providers will provide the upgrade for free from 100/20 to 500/50 from mid September

      • I think most will, but it's not guaranteed.

        https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Guides/NBN-Speed-Upg…

        copy pasted from whistleout:

Will faster NBN plans cost more?

NBN Co isn't charging NBN providers more for the new faster plans. Wholesale costs will stay the same for NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000 plans.

That doesn't mean plans won't get more expensive. Providers will also need to purchase additional network-to-network interface (NNI) capacity or backhaul capacity.

NNI is effectively the connection back to the NBN, whereas backhaul typically refers to the connection between a telco and the wider internet. To avoid congestion, a telco would need enough backhaul that matches the capacity they use on the NBN. Some telcos, like Aussie Broadband, own their own infrastructure, which allows them to cut down on this cost. Others need to purchase connectivity through a larger provider.

Backhaul is more affordable than what NBN used to charge for capacity, but more customers on faster plans could see providers need to invest a lot more. This, in turn, could increase prices for customers.

At this stage, several providers have confirmed that eligible customers will get the faster speeds for free, however. Telstra, Optus, Superloop, Aussie Broadband, Tangerine, More, Vodafone, Dodo, and iPrimus have all confirmed they'll pass on the new speeds at no extra cost.

Of course, this doesn't mean all providers will. Some may continue to offer an NBN 100 plan, and then charge more for an NBN 500 option.

Anyone in Perth with this ISP?

    • +1

Closest POP will be in Sydney so will be not a great experience for video calling / gaming. Things that can buffer will be fine.

    • +1

      Yeah I use them.

They are ok. Typed my password wrong 3 times, cos silly me, got locked out. Went to change password, the email link they send for that went to 404…yeah this company is shocking.

That said my 250 connection is going to a 750 connection in september.
I'm on a 12 month plan for $75 a month, so when this runs out ill be going elsewhere; I don't need 750 at all. Not these days.

    • They're connected with WA-IX so possibly have a PoP there, but I can't find any solid network info or looking glass; all assumptions.

  • Can opt out cgnat free?

    • Yes you can, although it takes a bit for them to understand what you're talking about though 😉

    • +1

I went on chat and asked to go on dynamic IP. It only took few minutes.

  • +1

is it just me or their webpage is so slow to load..

    • Indeed, it’s annoying.

  • I have been with these guys for almost 6 months, no issues here in cbr on fttp connection. I needed a cheap isp that would let me opt out of cgnat and southern phone allows that.

I am currently on 250/25, getting the auto upgrade to 750/50 from next month.

  • -1

the connection been very unstable for the last couple of days…

bit of connection drop out for couple of minutes, bit of DNS issue (only to some websites), sometime the connection just completely went dead!

    • Have you tried doing a hard reset with your NBN NTD(NBN Wall Box)? Turn the power off for 30 secs before turning it back on. I had the same issue yesterday but with a different ISP.

      • did everything such as restart router & modem (after 10min or so)
even today the connection still unstable (better than the last few days)
couple of downloads just stopped (only to certain URL as one still goes on)

  • I am having issues signing up. After submitting all details and credit check I go to submit and it presents an error and says I need to call. Apparently the call centre closes at 6pm. The customer service seems tricky to navigate.

  • Cashback didn't track for me so logged it with them, they said I'll have to wait 3 months before a result. About two months in so far.

  • Anyone else having issues with topcashback…. I click through and land on an error page.

Edit: Actually the southern phone site is down.

  • missed their "$100 Bill Credit" offer in June

  • I am currently with TPG 50/20 with no lock in contract. If I sign up with this plan, do I still get the speed upgrade in Sep?

    • Yes all 100+ plans upgrade in September.

    • +1

Yeh as long as you sign up to any eligible plan, which this (100/20) is, you'll get the upgrade.

      • Just called TPG and they require a 30 day notice…

        • +1

I'm coming from Exetel which has the same 30 day policy, but when I called up and asked nicely, they waived it. I had 2 weeks left on my current cycle and although I couldn't cancel early and receive a pro-rata refund. They just let me cancel after my current period was up and did not have to pay for the following month.

Although the person you spoke with may have insisted on requiring the 30 days notice, it might be possible another rep may be more lenient. Otherwise refer the the thread below to get around it.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/883643

  • Cgnat? Static ip?

    • CG-NAT default. Can opt out and go dynamic IP for free. Static IP at a cost.

  • First level support is a joke and wasted hours of my time with a complete drop out. When it finally after about three phone calls and hours of time got escalated to a network engineer in Australia, the problem was mostly resolved.

This works out as the current best offer, even vs 6 month offerings (if you count cashback).

    Network Pros:

Peering wise, their primary peering is with Superloop, so it's near Superloop-level peering. Secondary peering with Hurricane Electric and some others, including some that peer with Vocus International Backbone. Shows IX as EdgieIX - Syd, MegaIX - Mel, Per, Syd, NSW-IX, VIC-IX, WA-IX.

    Network Cons:

    • Can't find a looking glass to determine which routes; they are peered with some crappy international routes and may prioritise these for cost savings.
    • No evidence of an Adelaide PoP
    • No evidence of Brisbane PoP
    • No Darwin PoP (not aware of any provider who has a Darwin PoP though, but with no ADL PoP this matters - it likely routes all the way to Sydney for NT customers)
    • @Dyl Southern Phone doesn't appear to have good reviews for Perth/WA.

How is amaysim NBN compared to the rest? I'm more familiar with their 28-day mobile plan. Thanks.

      • Amaysim is purely Optus resales from memory, so no difference to Optus NBN directly except CVC limits (they may be stringy on CVC and have lower peak time speeds due to it, but peering will be identical)

CVC is bandwidth from you to the nearest NBN PoI, most good providers keep below ~85% usage to ensure max speeds even at peak time. Budget providers cut corners with CVC, which results in lower peak time speeds.

Can't find many NBN reviews, but https://ie.trustpilot.com/review/amaysim.com.au their mobile plans aren't great reviews, lol

        • Thanks. Interesting about the negative mobile reviews.

I've only used amaysim on a spare phone. Amaysim customer service is the best I've encountered. I'm with original Telstra on my main phone.

    • Thanks for this table - really helpful. I used it to negotiate with my provider. i found adding a col for annual costs helpful to compare over a 12m period.
I only looked at a few. Excluding cashbacks,

      1. Southern $780
      2. Moose $903.60
      3. Spintel $929.70
      4. Dodo $935.88
      5. TPG $959.88
      6. Exetel $960
      7. Superloop $1020

With the Exetel $100 cashback for example, that changes so the annual cost is $860.

    • you should add Arctel to this as it is the cheapest option at $50 for 500/50 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/921323

      • Those are annual cost and Arctel won't be cheapest annually if you don't have FTTP or don't need the 500/50 speed
        50x6 + 90x6 = 840

Southern also has cashback, so it brings it down further from 780

Also if you can resell the Eero 7 that retails for 200+, that could be a perk too. Albeit I'm not sure if the Eero 7 is locked and pre-configured to Southern, still waiting on response below.

  • Joined in June. Speed is stable. Highly recommended.

  • They perform a credit check during sign up.

  • My connection is stable. Speed is good. Connected to a staff via online chat in less than 1 minute, CGNAT removed after 1 hour. They are good.

  • Any feedbacks from Brisbane?

    • Couldn't find any info of a Brisbane PoP, it likely routes via Sydney

  • Can I use my own modem AC 1200 (from TPG)?

  • I submitted and got connected within an hour. There were no confirmation emails other than 'we received your order,' but I went to their support chat and found out it was being already connected. I had nothing to do with my router, I was previously with Amysim. So far the connection is good, no drops. I'm in Melbourne

    • Hi, when did you submit your order? I’ve been trying since last Thursday

Edit: today I got through to chat who told me not to use Medicare for ID but drivers licence instead. After 1 week of trying and speaking with customer service (both phone and chat), I have finally been able to sign up.

  • I really want to share that I have taken move from Swoop to Southern Phone NBN 100/20

    • I get 100mb/20mb for 12 months - $65 per month
    • Topcashback $37.5 cash back tracked
    • Received free Eero 7 $0 (12 months condition)
    • Ping 35-55 103 MB with Swoop Ping 25 106 Mb with Southern NBN (TP-link wifi 6 Router) Ping 16 110 Mb with Southern NBN (Eero 7)
    • Speed will go upgrade free to 500/50 MB in 2 weeks
  • Anyone opt for their eero7 router? When will they ship the router?

    • +2

      yes I have takene eero 7, $65, 12 months, cashback 50%,
they shipped in less than 10 hours and tracking detail was provided then I have received in 2 days,
Eero 7 I have received was not sealed but it was new, and easy to set up,
especially, I could use of same router ID and password as previous router and it was awesome for me.
Ping for Southern Phone service I get for 100 Mb, was great 15-20, speed was 105-110 Mb/s with wireless connection upstair.

      • Thanks! That's great info!

      • Is the eero 7 pre-configured out of the box with Southern Phone logos/settings in any of the apps etc?

Asking as I'm wondering on future re-sellability of these things. Saw on whirlpool (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/9vw47w56) someone had issue with locked Eero6 from other providers.

        • I got mine this Monday. Activation is scheduled for next week. You do need to download the eero app and set it up, but I noticed the interface has a “Powered by AGL” logo. Not sure if that means it’s pre-configured. Functionally though, I haven’t seen any difference compared to a non-ISP eero. I’m also running it with my current provider without any issues, so at least it’s not locked.

  • For postcode 3064: I’m on Southern Phone NBN25/5 with Eero 6 Plus (0$ DPP, 12 months).

No dropouts so far, with 20+ devices connected. They don’t notify of planned NBN outages though :). Cost: $45/month.

The issue: I moved from 25/10 → 25/5, and I’m really feeling the slower upload speed.

    Upgrade options:

NBN100/20 at $89/month (for existing customers). This plan will be upgraded to 500/50 after mid-September.

I checked via chat. They’ll launch better plans for existing customers in October. No waiting period if I re-join as a new customer.

So I’m considering: Cancelling now, paying the $88 break fee, and rejoining straight away with Eero 7 (12 months 0$ DPP).

    Question:
👉 Are there any catches or downsides I should be aware of before doing this?

    • I'm assuming it's just the credit check hit on rejoining again.

Also, is the eero 6+ locked or pre-configured in any way with Southern Phone logos/settings in any of the apps etc?

I saw on whirlpool (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/9vw47w56) that these might be locked and not worth the resellability from other providers, not sure about Southern Phone.

      • +1

so here is the catch: even though contract is no-lock in and they only said you pay 10$ for remaining months with DPP plan- they quoted me exit fees : 88 (break fee) + 80 (device remaining payments) + 10(late fee is must for whatever reason) ~ AUD 200. One can join again as a new customer (promo price at $65 per month), no internet for 48 hours they said and then takes two hours once order is placed - yes, you can get eero 7 as a new customer. They said to not worry and their product team is releasing promo plans for existing customers in Oct.

Regarding eero 6+ plus being locked, no it is not. There was no prior configuration on the device somehow, secondly its app detects your retailer and then shows its logo at the startup. For some reason, mine says AGL while I am with southern phone.

        • Oo, thanks for the info.

$10 late fee applies when invoice isn't paid by due date I think, also break fee is.. odd O.o I never saw any of it from their online T&C. Could it just be the final month of the plan fee? Eg your plan is 88/month, so the final invoice will include the final month fee.

Southern Phone is owned by AGL, that'll explain the logo. It'll mean the Eero is pre-configured, albeit it might just be a nuisance/advertisement thing as oppose to it being useless if you try to switch ISP.

Guess I'll skip the Eero so I won't be messing with any device payment

  • Comes down to $65 per month - new customers*

    Nbn 100/20

  • +1

Speed is not very consistent. During the sign up they cannot perform credit check (I tried all 3 types of ID) but still proceed with my order (there is a message that the credit management team will review in 3 days). I picked activation day to be 1 week after the sign up date, and received no email in between except the 'We have received your order'. On the activation day, I received an email from my previous provider that the service was cancelled. So I'm not sure whether their credit management team did something or not.. And on the Southern Phone portal, I can see my order is 'Processing' status and not yet complete. Very confusing process overall.

    • thanks.

So have you acutally got it connected now?

What did you mean by speed is not consistent? Lot of drop outs? how is the ping?

      • Yeah I got connected on the activation date. On the first night the speed was half (or sometimes less than half) of what it's meant to be, but if I waited for 5 mins and ran the speedtest again, I got the right speed. These few nights I don't get slowness so I didn't perform a speedtest to check.
Sorry I'm not technical I don't know how to perform a ping.

  • this or the new Spintel deal?? - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/923061

given that Arctel no longer seems to offer a 30-day future dated signup (essential for churners from Exetel, Superloop etc.)

  • I just spoke to a CSR

If you take up this offer you must start it within 30 days
You will be automatically upgraded to 500/20 on 15 Sept
    Price will remain at $65
    Eero 7 is unlocked
    Eero is preconfigured
He did point out that the Eero 7 is only free if you stay for 12 months, otherwise you have to pay it out as per T&C

  • I still have 2 months left on my 30% discounted More/Yello connection.

Should I take up this offer now to get the Router and cashback?
Or should I wait and hope that a similar Southern Phone offer will be made available within the next 2 months?
I would expect new plans to published after the 500/20 become available on the 15th.

I guess I am asking do they run a router + cashback offer frequently?
    Any thoughts?

    • If you live in Sydney or Melbourne where people have verified they get good speeds. It might not be a bad idea to give it a go since you can get on this plan for 12 months which will save you the hassle of churning after 6 months as you would with other plans and you get a free modem.

If you end up having a poor connection, you can return the modem and not pay the pay out fee. I've verified this through CS chat, but might be good if you do it as well to get a record in case they say otherwise.

On the other hand I've noticed around November and December nbn providers generally have some good deals, and so I set up my connections to churn around this time and again around June which is another time good deals generally pop up. However, nothing is guaranteed.

      • "If you end up having a poor connection, you can return the modem and not pay the pay out fee."
Thanks, this is good to know.
I think that I will give them a try.

        • I should have mentioned that not paying the fee and returning the modem is dependent on returning the modem unused in it's original unopened and sealed condition.

          • @Notatightass: Thanks, that seems reasonable to me.
I intend to keep using my existing unlocked router and sell the Eero once I'm happy with speed and stability.

Since the Eero will be preconfigured with my connection credentials, I'll have to open it to remove my credentials before I sell it unfortunately. :-(

  • Is it just me or is the website down? Joined up a few days ago, connected but god damn, the website hasn't been working to log onto my account. Customer service is TRASH

    • Yeh their website is fairly trash. I couldn't log in for about a week when I first joined up because it was having issues. A bit surprised to hear it's down again.

  • I spoke to their online chat service and had them confirm that we can get a free FTTC upgrade to FTTP on their 12 month100/20 plan. Their T&Cs state that only 250 and up would get it but I had their online chat confirm it twice and have screenshotted.

Looks like this might be the cheapest way to get the NBN upgrade at $65/month?

    • I already posted the email they sent to tell me about the free upgrade for the 100/20 plans.

      • LOL I don’t know how I missed that - my bad I must need glasses or something. Thank you for your service 🫡

        • Lol, I was kinda suprised you missed it too.

    • I just signed up tonight for 100/20 with a connection date in October. No mention on the site or in their emails about an upgrade to 500/50 yet.

What’s your feeling about whether that’s only if you’d connected before today’s speed upgrade?

      • I got connected today - can confirm the speed is already 500/50 (I am on FTTP). I think they just don't bother to update the website - which is not surprising given the complaints about their lack of communication.

  • Upgraded speeds are now live 1 day early! Just did a speedtest and got 528/44.

  • Southern Phone just amended their T&cs and at the bottom of the email it states early termination fees will be waived if we can cancel within the next 30 days.

This may be applicable to those that signed up for 12 months $65 plan and received a free modem

Remember, you can change or cancel your service at any time, and if this change affects you, any applicable and current early termination fees will be waived if you cancel your services within the next 30 days.

  • It seems Southern Phones appears to be throttling the 100mbps speed to 70.

  • I got this deal 100/20mb, recently it went up to 500/50 but after abkut a week its back at 100/20. Is it supposed to be 500/50?

    • Im pretty sure it's supposed to stay at 500/50.
Maybe try hard reset both the nbn and personal modem and see if it helps. Otherwise I'm assuming you'll have to call them up for tech support.
