Cheapest I've managed to find them. Still not particularly cheap for a fly killer I guess, but I hate flies so happy to pay it if it does the job.

Could be a good Father's day gift too

    WM10 WMD
    Missed opportunity

  • +19

Great fun device for kids and adults of all ages, especially when combined with a laser sight.

But regularly available at AliExpress for under $50 and $10 more for the laser. Considerably less with coins and coupons too.

    • +11

Even at ali prices, it seems very expensive for what it is

      • +1

Not compared to their $80 retail plus postage.

Well made and robust. Fun stuff, especially if you time your run when available for $30 or less. Only issue is that the packaging often arrives damaged making them questionable for gifting.

        • +11

          "Rico's Roughnecks hoorah!"

      • +3

Even more expensive, if loaded with gourmet Himalayan Pink Salt

    • +1

      Legit same brand?

    • Using something SIMILAR-to-this, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/396950208692
      With 18650 Li-ion rechargeable & replaceable battery…strong-battery does-something-strange to flies & mosquitos 🤔

      • +1

        Similar.
        Huh!
        How?

        • Mine: '18650 Li-ion rechargeable & replaceable battery'…I've no-idea the battery-details of that listing. It was use for illustration purposes.

    • Someone mentioned about it getting through customs.

  • +1

Is this better quality than those in Aliexpress? Are these toys reliable or failed to function after light use?
Anyway, I have placed an order. Handy for this summer.

    • +3

Had my 2.0 for 2 years and blasted it thousands of times. All good. If you have a 3D printer heaps of mods available.

    • +3

I use pretty standard table salt and mine kills the flys about 1 out of 5 times. It just leaves a small salt mess everywhere.

A pretty fun opening experience as a gift but its otherwise pretty annoying as a solution. An old fly swatter is superior

      • +4

I'd say mine is closer to 4 kills in 5 if you're about 1ft away. Sometimes the first shot doesnt kill it but will disable it enough for you to finish it off easily.
Any further than 50cm away and you do lose a bit of power. I prefer it to a swatter. Better to have salt around than blood n guts imo.

        • I've been as close as 5cm away and it just blows the fly around but doesn't kill it. Salt is being shot out but it doesn't have the desired effect

          • +3

@Sir Flabo: Less than 15cm is probably too close. In my experience, the sweet spot is around 30cm to 40cm.

As best as I can tell, what happens when you try to shoot them from too close is that the blast of air from the shot will push the flies out of the way before the salt can hit them.

      • +6

I've used table and rock salt, rock salt being far superior to table salt in my experience. Although sometimes if you are close, say 15cm or closer they can get eviscerated. My sweet spot is about 20-30cm and I hardly ever don't get a kill first time unless I miss, the laser dot helps. I find table salt is more percussive than killing, that's my grain of salt on the matter.
But absolutely love the bug-a-salt. I've gifted one and it was a hit, especially at the holiday house that had plenty of pests. Pest control and entertainment in one.
Also to add, don't leave it cocked when you are aren't using it. I had a friend that had one that was much weaker power than mine. I think it's because the firing mechanism had stretched out or something to that effect, they frequently cocked it and left it idle if the fly bailed. Rubber band maybe?

        • +3

Reporting the above post to PETA for how graphic your description is!

          😂

        • +1

          they can get eviscerated

Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Throne!

        • Peak OzB here, in a post about a 'bargain' for a salt-shooting gun and discussing the technique and methodology of assassinating a living organism [flies] with the salt, using said gun.

        • +2

"that's my grain of salt on the matter" - I salute you!

    • +1

I tried Ali but it got blocked at Chinese customs. I did get a refund though.

      • Chinese customs not letting through this "gun" to be sent to Australia ?

      • Iuno seems like others got it through customs

  • +5

Imagine what bug gonna do if you missed the first shot

    • +10

Micro-shit all over your house, presumably.

Same as if you hit it, miss it or sleep through its trekking across your face or dishes…

If they didn’t want this, those damned dirty flies should have considered their actions before they started this war with us…

  • +3

Don't these just spray salt all over your house?

    • And insect parts (if you're a good enough shot).

    • +1

Salt does not kill you and in fact it a disinfectant.

      • -1

It does rust out anything metal though, and strip varnish.

        • +5

You should vacuum the area after use. I think I would use this outside more than inside - BBQ. I can salt my food with it.

          • -1

@Black Hole: Isn't the salt bad for the soil?

            • +3

@boretentsu: Its a tiny amount….not enough to do anything unless you're taking about 50 shots at the one spot or at some plant thats very sensitive to salinity. A tablespoon of salt which is probably about the size of the hopper lasts about 100 shots.

            • @boretentsu: Careful eating a Chiko Roll or Bag of Chips outdoors them sunshine

    • Yes

  • I bought this a long time ago, like a decade ago. It is a lot of fun but Mortein spray is faster and easier.

    • +8

Yes, but you are spraying poison.

      • +4

Yes that's how insect spray works.

        • +3

Yes, but that poison eventually is inhaled by humans and children around.

    • The good ol comparison of apples and oranges

  • Waiting for bronze wing pigeon "a-salt". Thanks in advance…

  • I have had one of these with a laser sight for over a year and love it. Both my boys fight who gets first dibs at being Predator and I run off with it whilst they argue! If there is a young lad or cowboy in you, get one and remember, don't limit the prey to flies!

  • +6

Fill it with poppy seeds instead of salt, you can one-shot cockroaches

    • +2

      Doubting this

Probably just makes them get high and fly in your face

      • OMG! PLEASE DO NOT PUT THAT IMAGE IN MY HEAD!

    • +3

Up voting for using the term 'one shit cockroaches' lol

    • Buckshot ammo

  • Bought it but forgot to use the discount code! OOps!

  • +1

Clap above the fly when it takes off - free

    • +2

Catch with chopsticks mid flight - expert.

    • Bit hard to do at 20-30cm away.
But you just do you Mr Long Hands

      • This guy here is Mr. Fantastic.

  • I got the original Bug-a-Salt many years ago
its fun to play but not very effective TBH
    kids love playing it though

  • Does this work on cockroaches?

    • Curious about this as well. How much force does it take to explode roach guts onto my carpet?

    • +2

      Na……won't penetrate the exoskeleton.

      • If you get it to stay still long enough you can probably get through after about 100 shots. We’ve punched a hole in a can after firing repeatedly at point blank range 😂

    • +1

Doesn't work on cockroaches or spiders but does annoy them. I've used it to persuade a huntsman down from the roof so I could capture and move it outside.

      • Your roof is indoors?

        • +1

lol I definitely should have said ceiling.

  • +5

I grabbed one from Supercheap Auto with click & collect for $59.99 during their 25% storewide sale in July. They ran another 25% sale earlier this month, so there’s probably another one coming.

    • Ali express might still be cheaper?

      • How do you know which one to get with similar effectiveness?

      • My one from Ali didn't get through customs.

        • Oh what, maybe you should have choose a toy colour.

        • Yeahh did anyone get theirs through customs? Ali express is much cheaper but scared to buy

          • @PeeDee: You have to make it through both Chinese and Australian customs.

I've since taken one overseas in my checked in luggage without issues.

          • @PeeDee: Have bought four thru Ali Express and not had one blocked.

Also bought some originals thru deals posted here and honestly cannot tell the difference between the Chinese knock offs. And the Chinese originals. One of the rare occasions where the quality of the cheap Ali substitute matches the original.

    • There is no stock.

    • Ooohh the description, due to legislative requirements this product is not for sale in NSW and ACT

  • ah the west, if only they gave these things a shot down their gullet

  • They’re really fun. Salt does get everywhere though.

  • What the heck is this LMAO

    • You shoot little grains of salt, at bugs, eg. flies.

  • Good price for considering it’s in stock and ships from Aus.

My local Jaycar only had the pink ones left.

Thanks OP! Got one for Father’s Day.

  • If they could design a stunning gun just with air pressure alone it would be great.

  • Note that you get the same discount with OFFER10 which I would assume is generic.

  • +1

Sand can replacing salt for those who are concerning metal rust.

  • I still prefer death by electricution swats

    • +1

No need to share your kink

  • According to the description:
"Deadly accurate partridge for easy clean up" - If it fires the partridge I suspect it wouldn't be an easy cleanup. If it releases a partridge, well, I suspect rounding up a partridge wouldn't be easy either.

  • Fun for a couple uses, inaccurate and suck and not really worth it overall, especially at this cost, Jesus.

If you're mid Early 20's - Mid 30's and have housemates they're more fun when sinking tins but that's about it

  • +3

I prefer the electric fly swat zappers

They don't insta die and you can torture them for a bit
