  • some stats on the phone would be nice…
    http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_ascend_g300-4594.php

downside as i can see it:
    512 MB RAM

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) upgradable to v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) according to GSMarena
    CPU 1 GHz Cortex-A5

  • I bought the G300 a couple weeks ago for $134- amazing phone for the price! I had it unlocked via eBay for $7

Currently awaiting approval from vodafone AU for ICS update.

Maybe you should add this to the heading- go to Prepaid 365 day to get it with no recharge credit

    • Are you saying it can't be unlocked via Vodafone online, free of charge?

      • Despite what's been said on other post's- CANNOT be unlocked for free by Vodafone.

        • As I posted below these CAN be unlocked for free by vodafone, I've done it myself personally. It takes them around 4-5 days to do but costs nothing. Just call them and ask them if you don't believe me.

      • I think there is a wait period 6-12 months depending on the plan/usage before Voda allow unlock for free. I have unlocked all my phone for free after 12 months.

    • I have a Nokia which is still on it's original firmware due to Vodafone not approving any updates for it…
Last Nokia update was 2012, in total Nokia has released 4 updates for it over almost 3 years.

  • I've been using the G300 for around 6 months, It's a pretty solid phone for the price. Jellybean 4.1.2 can be installed (cyanogenmod) and everything works as it should.
the 512mb ram is a downside but as long as you're not running too many things at once you should be OK - firefox / chrome are a bit too laggy but the stock browser runs perfectly.
Basically, for the price it's the best phone money can buy. The only upgrade I've considered is a Nexus 4 if I can get one somewhere around the $300 mark.

  • I bought 2 of these G300 phones for freinds at $149, and they are surprisingly quite quick battery life 2 days with BT and 3g on.
The only thing is front glass, its not gorilla and scratches easy so need protector otherwise I bought another for myself this time $116 is pretty good value delivered and I can unlock for $6 so its a no brainer for me as I only use email, and the occasional game.

    • Sorry, that's not correct. The phone has a Corning Gorilla Glass screen. I've not got a scratch on mine at all in 6 months and it's regularly in my pocket with keys/lighters etc. with no screen protector. Perhaps they are being a lot more rough with the phones than usual? This is the same glass used on your high-end samsung/apple phones and will not scratch any easier.
Also your comment about unlocking is incorrect. You don't need to spend money on some (questionably legal?) ebay unlocker. Vodafone will unlock these phones for FREE. just log an unlock request on the website or call them.

these phones cannot be unlocked for free, what would be the point of locking the phone in the first place? Only the Xperia Sola unlocks for free

        • Sorry but you're wrong. I bought one and they unlocked it for me for free.

        • maybe you were just lucky

        • he is not the only one)
I had my nokia unlocked for free one year ago, straight away after purchase

        • +1

I had my HTC ChaCha (bought from EB Games) unlocked online, free of charge.

my g300 could not be unlocked for free. i just tried it…

          Handset Unlock - Payment Selection

Our records show that to unlock your handset a fee is applicable.

          Unlock fees for IMEI:
          Service Fee:$50.00
          New Phone:$0.00
          Online discount*:$25.00 -
          Total:$25.00

you can unlock yourself if you're technical though: http://www.modaco.com/topic/358599-how-to-free-sim-unlock-yo…

  • Are these nextg compatiable?

    • according to the website 850/900/1800/1900, note the 850… so yep.

      • I can confirm they support HSDPA+ on the vodafone 850 network, can't vouch for telstra (personally). but the gsmarena specs would seem to indicate it would be fine.

  • How is the battery life of G300?

    • It's quite dependent on the rom being used and what speed you're running the CPU at. I usually get to the end of the day with about 60-70 % battery remaining with light to moderate use. It's pretty much on-par with most current smartphones, I'd say it's better than any of the HTC phones I've used.

      • I just use for my email, call and normal browser

        • Yea you'll be fine if you charge every second night I'd say.

VODAFONE UNLOCK is definitely not FREE, its $25 via vodafone

    Service Fee:$50.00
    New Phone:$0.00
    Online discount*:$25.00 -
    Total:$25.00

    • I think the situation is that it's determined by if you select 'existing' or 'new' customer when purchasing the handset. Unlocking for new customers seems to be $25.00 and existing customers have this waved. I'd suggest getting a friend who is with vodafone to buy it under their account to save on the unlocking fee.
