Speed notes.

  1. You may have to change ISP to get the speed you want.
  2. Download speed overhead allowance means a speedtest shows a faster download speed. For example, you can get 2113Mbps on the 2000Mbps plan.
  3. The maximum download speed on the 1000Mbps plan is 970Mbps even with the new 2.5GbE nbn NTD.
  4. Some ISPs are moving nbn FTTP and HFC customers from 100/40 to 500/50, 100/40 to 250/100 or keeping you on 100/40 until you contact your ISP and change to a faster speed plan.
  5. You may need a new router and new CAT6 RJ45 Ethernet cables to reach maximum speeds.
  6. nbn FTTP and HFC 12/1, 25/5, 25/10 and 50/20 speed plans don't get an automatic speed boost. Contact your ISP to change to a faster speed plan.
  7. nbn FTTN, FTTB and FTTC 12/1, 25/5, 25/10, 50/20, 100/20 and 100/40 speed plans are still available.

        • FTTC speeds stay the same. Did you mean you are not eligible for FTTC to FTTP?

  • What ever happened to Leaptel being good?
I got on their 100/20 FTTP (in house 4 port box) for $79.95 from May for 12 months and yet to be upgraded.
    Am I better off churning?

    • +1

The OP says the upgrade takes effect from this Sunday

      • So am I better to off stay on this next 9 months of $79 or churn? 🤔

        • It seems like a reasonable price to me for what will soon be a 500/50 plan. If you can find a better deal elsewhere then go for it.

  • I got an email from nbn over the weekend stating that 500 will be going to 1000.

    • That is the upload speed. 1000/50 changes to 1000/100.

  • +3

Worth noting that pricing for 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400 is dropping as well.

ABB and Leaptel have already dropped their pricing for these:

    ABB
    250/100 - $109/month
    500/200 - $130/month
    1000/400 - $150/month

    Leaptel
    250/100 - $105/month (promo $95/month for 12 months)
    500/200 - $125/month (promo $115/month for 12 months)
    1000/400 - $145/month (promo $135/month for 12 months)

    • Hmm, 500/200 seems ok for my purpose. Mostly Plex and 200 up meaning no lag/transcoding for external viewing. Currently on 1000/50. See next week what we go with. Know we get 100 up but some 4k 100 is too slow for direct play. Then again not my problem lol. Currently paying $129 +5 ip. 1000/50 ABB

  • the upgrade for existing 1000mbit plans is by far the shittiest. they should've at least given you 6 months 2000mbit…well i'll downgrade to 500mbit and save some money.

  • Anyone know if this upgrade helps you get closer to speeds you pay for? Buddy telco 1000/50 - my download is usually only around 850. I wonder if downgrading to 750 would be cheaper if it doesn’t get much higher.

    • I’d like to know this also. I suppose we’ll find out in 4 days.

    • +2

No it won't. The maximum download speed on the 1000Mbps plan is 970Mbps. Some routers and devices can't go any faster than what you get and have to be upgraded.

      1. What is the brand and model number of the router?
      2. Wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi?
      3. Are you using speedtest.net in a web browser or mobile app?
  • My southern phone connection for 100/20 is due to be connected early October… I'm guessing I also get this upgrade?

    • +1

100/20 changes to 500/50 if you have nbn FTTP or HFC.

  • so no speed change for the lower speeds under 100 atm?? im on 100/20 upgrading to 500 but if i can go to a lower speed and get 100 or 250 id switch to that and save some money

    • That is right. The next speed plan after 50/20 will be 500/50 for nbn FTTP and HFC.

  • Any word on FTC - Will they benefit from the same plan increases?

    • No speed increases if you stay on FTTC. Check here to see if you can change from FTTC to FTTP.

  • I thought NBN was just updating speeds, are not all ISPs doing this without changing cost?

I was expecting to see a "not a deal" comment, not 4 pages!!??

    • Many of the popular ISPs have confirmed there is no extra cost. There is over 100 ISPs so I can't confirm that some random ISP won't change their price.

      There is always one comment.

      • lol that's the one I was expecting :)

  • +1

For anyone in the same boat as me with More NBN, on the 100/40 plan, you need to downgrade to the 100/20 plan, otherwise come next week when the speeds are upgraded you will still continue to pay the additional monthly fee over the 100/20 plan, despite now having the same speeds (500/50). Just spoke with More who downgraded my plan in anticipation for the speed boost next week.

    • +1

How much are you now paying for the 100/20 soon to be 500/50?

      • +1

$62 for the 100/20 plan with CommBank discount

        • Nice, I'm paying $80 for the 1000/50 and I checked their offers again and it's now showing me $100 so I think I'll stay put which will also get me to 1000/100.

Do you know if that pricing you got was relevant to the time you signed up or you got the price it now shows?

          • +1

@neo: Relevant to the time I signed up. My initial Yello offer ran out, then I asked if it could be extended over the website chat and they happily applied it again.

  • Do we need to upgrade to 100mbpa beforehand, or is the new mbps replacing the old ones at same price?

    • You can upgrade to 100/20 to get 500/50 or wait until next week.

      • If it’s indeed a speed update at same prices I wouldn’t be rushed yeah, wonder the chances of ISP also increasing costs after this in the near term

  • +1

The best time to secure the deals are just before the end of September

    • Why that the best

      • +2

because i predict post september all providers will start charging normal pricing and because of speed increase it makes them look like they have increased the service but their bottom line has not changed so they can make more money. I have not concrete evidence but based on insider conversations it would seem this is the case

        • why deactive .. did you get eliminated by Big telco ?

  • Any lists anywhere of compatible NBN Modems? Wondering if what I have now will be compatible with the new speeds or if this will need upgrading as well.

    • +2

You may need a new router to reach maximum speeds.

      1. What is the brand and model number of the router?
      2. What nbn speed plan are you changing to?
  • Forums? Where's the plan prices / deal

    • Speed boosts always get posted as deals.

No prices because the store is nbn and not an ISP.

      • And get downvoted to oblivion usually…

Didn't CarbonComms try to post the speed boost as a 'deal'? Some retailer did and got downvoted to all hell

        • Previous speed boosts had hundreds of upvotes.

CC 250/25 deal got 11 upvotes and 2 downvotes. Most of the downvotes were on comments.

  • I'm with leaptel. I have 1000/50 but get 600/50. Uploading cripples my entire connection. Can't even download. Awful infrastructure here ☹️

    • +2

That seems like a router problem. You should be getting in the 900's using wired ethernet.

      1. Do you have nbn FTTP or HFC?
      2. What is the brand and model number of your router?
      3. Are you using wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi?
    • For higher speeds there are a lot more factors at play as the other person mentioned. It is much harder to get close to 1000 than it is to cap out a 100mbit connection. You'd need a gigabit ethernet card (that much you probably do have, but are you using it rather than wifi?), a cat5e or cat6 cable instead of wifi, a good router (not a free ISP $10 junk one). If you're on wifi you're basically never going to get anywhere close to 1000, and even if your computer is a bit old then all of the above might not get you to the right speeds.

  • What router should I get for the 2gbps speeds?

  • Does anyone have the new FTTP 1-port or 4-port NTD and can share the idle power consumption?

My existing GbE 4-port NTD idles at around 10~12watts from memory. Seems high for not doing any routing and just being an optical modem interface. I have no need for multiple WAN connections so would't mind switching to the 1-port if it has lower idle power

    • I don't have one to check. nbn website says the 1-port nbn FTTP NTD uses under 4.4W on average.

      • +2

Thank you. Wow that's big diff in the context.

  • Anyone else on Exetel with 100/20 Mbps that did not receive a message/email for a free speed boost ?

    • I got the email, but seeing as the One plan is $80 and I currently pay $85, and there is no mention of a reduction in price..it's a bit shit

      • You can pay $85/m or change to the 500/50 One plan $80/m ongoing @ Exetel.

Current Exetel plan: CG-NAT IPv4 and Static IPv6. CG-NAT can be turned off and you can pay for a Static IPv4.

Exetel One plan: CG-NAT IPv4 and Static IPv6. CG-NAT can't be turned off and no Static IPv4. Mobile app to manage your account.

  • I'm with launtel and old 250 down plan , now 750 is going up to $4 a day, so not free upgrade

    • +2

That is Launtel's decision. There is 500/50 $3.50/day however it's about $105/month. I would change ISP unless you prefer the daily pricing.

      • +1

Nah, their service and reliability is top notch, I could get cheaper but it's a premium I pay for quality

  • Does anyone know if exetel customers will be getting boosted from 100/20 plans on HFC connecitons? Thanks

    • Yeah you are at the same price or change to the 500/50 One plan $80/m ongoing @ Exetel.

      • Forced cg-nat on the new plan? Ouch. I'll be leaving exetel if that's the case. I hate cg-nat and had them turn it off the 2nd day I was connected. I'm currently on an offer of $75/mth for first 6 months and I signed up 2 months ago. Do you know if this will continue or go up to $80/mth? Either way, I think I might have to leave if its forced cgnat and I gotta pay extra for a static ip

        • The new Exetel 500/50 One plan is CG-NAT.

No CG-NAT if you stay on your current Exetel plan and it continues at $75/m for 4 months. Change ISP whenever you want. Exetel ask for 30-days cancellation notice.

          • +1

@Twix: Exetel One plan allows ending the service on the last date of the current billing cycle, rather than 30 days cancellation notice for legacy plans.
Also, if churning to essentially the same company (i.e. Superloop), there is a good chance of getting that 30 days cancellation notice waived. Superloop and Exetel use the same billing team.

        • Exetel legacy plans are no longer available to new customers. It's unclear what Exetel will do to those plans in terms of prices (they can raise them). It looks like Superloop has decided to make Exetel essentially offering only one plan with forced CG-NAT.

Most people considered Exetel One plan due to the $100 topcashback deal.

  • +1

Damn my FTTN :( Apparently my area is scheduled for upgrade in December.

  • +2

I'm currently on the 100/40 power plan with Exetel. I also have CGNat opt-out on my plan, and a static IP. I was tempted by the OnePlan advertised in July with 500/50 speeds for $80, but I was disappointed to learn they don't allow CGNat opt-out or static IP on that plan, so I didn't go for it.

Last month I saw that the 500/50 speed update was coming to my plan. I knew that is an NBN wholesale upgrade, but I assumed I'd be automatically changed to the OnePlan as part of that. I'd found a new ISP I wanted to go with, so I called Exetel account hotline to put in my 30 days notice.
The person I spoke to on the phone last month said I had it a bit wrong. They said customers on existing plans (eg, 100/20 and 100/40) will be upgraded to 500/50 for free 14th July, I don't need to move to OnePlan, and I can stay on my current plan with my current static IP. I said I'd still like to cancel, because I'm paying $99/month and I'd like to move to a different ISP that is $89/month for the same speed tier.
The rep then offered to give me $10/month discount for 6 months, so I could stay with Exetel. So I said okay, that's generous, thanks, I'll stay on my current plan.

Today I had the realization that if 100/20 ($95/mo) and 100/40 ($99/mo) are both being upgraded to 500/50, will I continue to pay more for the same speeds? In other words, should I change to the 100/20 plan before the upgrade on the 14th? But would that affect my arranged $10/month discount? I called Exetel account hotline today to find out.

The person I spoke to said the opposite of what I was told last month. They said all Exetel NBN customers who are being upgraded to 500/50 on the 14th Sept will be moved to the $80 OnePlan as part of that upgrade, and they also said after 14th Sept, everyone will be on the OnePlan, all other plans are migrated to that plan, that is why its called "OnePlan".

I said that can't possibly be correct. Especially after what I was told last month, and what I've read online. What about grandfathered plans, etc.
The rep got very frustrated with me, asked me why I would want to pay more for the same speed, on my existing plan. I explained my need for CGNat opt-out, and static IP. They said that if I need those features, I should put in my 30 days notice and choose a different ISP, because Exetel cannot offer those features after 14th Sept.
I was floored to hear that, because I'd previously been explicitly told the opposite. What if I didn't call today, and suddenly on the 14th my service is crippled as part of the upgrade? So I asked to be put through to cancellations.
The same rep said they can do cancellation, and said with the 30 days notice the account would be cancelled 10th October. I told them to look into my call history on the system and see that I requested my account be cancelled last month, and was told I should stay on my current account. So I managed to get an immediate cancellation, and now I'm more than happy to move to a new ISP (probably Neptune).

I still think the rep is misinformed, or maybe I'm wrong, either way I encourage any other existing Exetel account holders to take a good look at their plan and find out exactly what is going to happen to their service on 14th Sept.

    • +2

I believe the first Exetel rep is right. Exetel haven't communicated that everyone will be on the One plan.

Neptune is good and local tech support.

  • +1

Alright, I just need to have a house first to have this deal, too easy.

  • When I got my cheap Optus deal, everyone told me not to because their service is so incompetent.

I didn't listen because, who ever really needs to contact their ISP?

That worked fine until now, just got FTTP available at my address and trying to get them to upgrade me from FTTN. Omg paiiiiinnnnnnn. The ability to upgrade is plastered all over their website but they just cannot compute that this is a thing that an ISP can do for me.

    • Look at Leaptel or Superloop for the nbn FTTP upgrade.

  • Will the superloop new plans be live next week?

    • I guess Sunday or Monday.

  • Telstra Bigpond Cable - It's a great service

    • +1

      That is now nbn HFC.

      • Well, it was a great service (IAW R055)

  • I'm quite anxious about the box installation given it involves drilling and digging. Where is the best place to install it for a 2 storey home?

    • Small hole in the wall that is covered by the nbn FTTP NTD. They may not need to dig. Is there an existing underground conduit?

Is your router downstairs or upstairs?

      • Current router is downstairs. The lounge room and garage is at the front of the house. The study is towards the back. Would it be better to install the hole in the lounge?

Regarding underground conduit, I'm not sure. Is there a way to check without digging?

Another concern is the size of the box. I heard whispers of a smaller box being available if we wait a little longer.

        • The lounge or garage can be used. A router with Wi-Fi located in the garage can give you poor Wi-Fi range and speed. You may have to run ethernet from the garage to the router downstairs. Maybe pick the lounge.

You can request the nbn FTTP 1-port NTD from Sunday. Pictures and wall mount bracket measurements starting from page 37.

Is there a white conduit pipe near your gas and power outside?

          • @Twix: So the lounge is better placement than the study? Normally my computer/ laptop is used in the study so that's probably where the router would be. I mean I could put the router in the lounge as well and just use WiFi but I guess that means Ethernet is no longer an option.

            • @brainactive: Option 1. nbn NTD in the lounge and run ethernet to your router in the study.

Option 2. Put both the nbn NTD NTD and router in the study. You may have to get conduit preinstalled if you want to do this. Refer to this document.

You can decline on the day if you don't agree and reschedule if necessary.

  • Ports: one 10GbE RJ45 port (grey) and three 2.5GbE RJ45 ports (orange).

OP , curious to know if the 10GbE port is sfp+ or ethernet?

    • +1

      Ethernet RJ45.

  • anyone know if Optus will automatically upgrade you or you gotta ask nicely? Im on 100Mbit HFC

    • 100/20 changes to 500/50 automatically @ Optus.

      • +1

        just checked.
i'm on some very old plan (from 7yrs ago) called "Internet Bundle" and its currently 100/36 ..
i wonder if that will get upped or i gotta manually change it to an in-market plan first

        • Change to 500/50 manually.

          • @Twix: how

            • +1

@capslock janitor: Wait until Optus release 500/50 and request a plan change.

I doubt your router will have any problems with the 50Mbps or 100Mbps upload speed.

        • +1

i might be on similar plan (?) bundled homephone

just received a optus email tabling our current 100/36Mbps would be upgraded to "business nbn Pro speed 250/80
also noting modem incompatible w/ upload speed ..

  • I’m currently on 100/20 with Vodafone and have a free speed boost. Am I eligible for a higher speed ?

    • You should get 500/50 if you have nbn FTTP or HFC.

      • +1

        I have FTTP

        • Yeah 500/50 however I haven't seen Vodafone say anything. You can always change ISP.

  • How?

    • I need more details.

      1. Do you have nbn FTTP or HFC?
      2. What is your nbn speed plan?
  • Damn, my 50/20 plan is so bad it doesn't even make the list.

    • You may find 500/50 for a similar price. How much are you paying for 50/20?

  • what about for fixed wireless users?
