iPhone 17 Pro Max - Where Do You Get It Outright/Cheap?

Looking for getting an iPhone 17 Pro Max, it’s aluminium this time what would the quality mean?

Is there a way to get it outright, cheaper like Costco, or any other 24 x months interest free, as Latitude charges $262 in addition to iPhone 17 PM.

What are thoughts any hidden tricks or hacks to get deals?

Pre-orders aren't for another 2 days. Maybe wait till retailers announce their pricing/bundle/offers then scan the landscape for the best deals available.

If you're price sensitive, you'll want to wait till the initial rush subsides, sales wane, and offers start up.

  • +1

What's wrong with your current phone?

    • +18

      It's says 16 it's already outdated :)

      • +4

Surely wait for the 18 at this point? It is the next to be announced!

    • +1

      Irrelevant to OP's question.

  • +2

Outright and TRS. Or Japan for tax free (Not at apple store).

    • +1

Can you elaborate on this? I’m looking to get the 17 Pro Max for a holiday to Japan at the end of the month and this sounds useful for me.

      • Buy in Japan itself or buy in Australia, claim trs at airport

    • -5

You are meant to declare and pay gst back upon entry as the value of the used iphone will still be over $1k.
If you are suggesting breaking the law, then there are even better deals out there.

      • +1

If you travel as a family, you can combine your allowance so no law breaking there

    • Do Japanese iPhones still have to have the camera shutter sound, even on Silent mode?

      • +2

        Only at Japan.

      • yeh it needs to for the weirdos taking upskirt photos

    • you only get $900 per adult in your party (kids get $450) so at minimum they'd need a party of 2 adults and a child for a $2250 allowance, otherwise you're supposed to pay the GST back on re-entry.

Now… would they ping you for it? probably not, every so often they flag people re-entering that have claimed over the $900 limit with things that are lilkely to be brought back in.

It's annoying that it's an "all or nothing" system, and you can't claim back the GST on $900 worth of the total, but it is what it is.

      • Even if you're pinged, they just do a cursory x-ray scan and then move you on. The staff don't really care about your GST products - they are more interested in biohazards (fruit, meat etc). Source: First hand experience

it’s aluminium this time what would the quality mean ?

    • Titanium: much stronger, more expensive, more scratch-resistant, heavier.
    • Aluminium: lighter, less expensive, better heat dissipation.

Heat dissipation is the main reason Apple has cited for making the switch to aluminium for the 17 Pro models, alongside the introduction a new vapour chamber cooling system.

But in terms of quality, Titanium is around 3-5x stronger in terms of tensile strength compared to Aluminium. Interestingly, this will be the first Pro model (since they were introduced in 2019) that is Aluminium:

    • iPhone 11 Pro / Pro Max (2019): Stainless Steel
    • iPhone 12 Pro / Pro Max (2020): Stainless Steel
    • iPhone 13 Pro / Pro Max (2021): Stainless Steel
    • iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max (2022): Stainless Steel
    • iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max (2023): Titanium
    • iPhone 16 Pro / Pro Max (2024): Titanium
    • iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max (2025): Aluminium

Meanwhile, most of the non-Pro iPhone models (with the exception of a few) have been made of Aluminium since the iPhone 5 (2012). I reckon it's a bit of a shame, because obviously the Pro models are meant to be a more premium variant.

    • -4

      Titanium was a mistake.

      • +10

        No need to elaborate.

        • Stainless steel is harder and more scratch resistant than titanium.

The only major upside titanium has over stainless steel is the weight and melting point (not that we care about this on a phone)

Aluminium means it's the new auto-folding model, just put it in your back pocket then take a seat.

Kogan have them up on their site

  • I have a iPhone 15 pro max and iPhone 13 mini both are still excellent.
I don’t understand the yearly upgrade cycle anymore.
It’s literally the same other than being orange.

And the price is now 3k for a phone with decent storage.

    • -4

Samsung is releasing new models more frequently, like 2-3x in a year.

    • +6

"I don’t understand the yearly upgrade cycle anymore. "

Who says the OP is upgrading yearly? Consumers can skip the yearly or biennial upgrade. Apple can't afford to. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I'm due for a new iPhone, currently using an 11.

Yes iPhone 17 Pro Max with 1GB is very expensive but I consider 256GB decent storage which is considerably cheaper.

      • yeah in the same boat, I am upgrading from an 11 as well and 256 GB is fine especially considering cloud storage is cheap these days.

        • +2

I’m looking at the Air. 256GB is plenty for me as I take the odd photo. If I took heaps of photos I’d go Pro Max for the better camera.

Should be a decent upgrade from my 11 Pro Max.

Will get one in November for TRS as planning to go OS, or earlier if JB have a Telstra offer.

          • @JimB: I was thinking about the Air but currently going for the Pro Max for the camera + the battery

            • @Saitake12: Good point, I’ll read some independent reviews on battery life and battery life.

However the thinness and light weight would be welcome especially when the phone hits me in the head as I fall asleep scrolling

              • @JimB: Air + appl battery pack costs just a bit less than base 17pro

                • @0806449: Yes, the battery is smaller than the other iPhone 17 phones, but due to efficiency gains still lasts 27 hours on video playback- same as the iPhone 16 Plus

In the real world that's more than enough.

I can charge in the car and have an existing powerbank if I'm on holidays.

FWIW the iPhone Pro Max 16 is rated at 33 hours and iPhone Pro Max 17 is 37 hours.

My current iPhone 11 Pro Max is rated 20 hours and only has 76% battery health. I'm sure I can survive with a new Air that is rated at 27 hours.

    • Well the iphone 17 is $1800 for 512gb. Still expensive, but it's a decent upgrade. I think not worth it from a 15 pro though.

      • Camera wise front and rear i think it is

        • Front yes. Rear I’m not sure, as only x2 optical zoom.

Iphone 17 pro max 256 GB $2199 coming soon …

My friend wants this. I'll help him with the process either through JB Hi-Fi plan or maybe Harvey Norman, then cancel the plan after that or after 4 months for Harvey Norman Optus plan 🤷

    • Can you do calculation how much net we save in cancelling the deal after we get an iPhone.?

Like there is $286 net charge if you buy interest free from Apple. Telstra offers interest free but their base plan starts at $60+ so net loss than profit.

      Cheers

      • +1

From previous preorder promotions, I think people save like $500 from cancelling JB HiFi plan, before the cancellation fee increase from $800 to $1000 …

Expect $1000 for the JB HiFi plan cancellation fee. Buy 10% off gift cards for first payment, maybe $2199 - $1400 free JB HiFi gift card = $799 + $99 first month plan that you have to pay. Then cancel the plan and pay almost $1000 cancellation fee. Use this if we want to buy from JB HiFi.

Let's see if Harvey Norman offer competitive plan for iPhone 17 series. Then at least use the Optus plan for 4 months before cancelling the plan.

One good thing from cancelling JB HiFi plan through Telstra chat (register Telstra ID after getting the plan if you don't have) is we can get points like >10k points to redeem other goods offered by Telstra. For example, redeem 10k points for free Belong $80 sim card. I did this and chose 5 months free data only plan (cannot call, but can receive sms). I can use the number for other freebies too :) So, I have main phone number for call/sms (PAYG plan) + second number just for data.

        • +1

is that really worth the effort and credit check for what would be a $200 gain?

          • @JDMcarfan: My friend wants it cheaper than normal price, other Ozbargainers also did it in previous years.

It's not $200 gain … Maybe it's like $300 discount + additional discount like $80 (for 256 GB) if buying gift cards with 10% discount. Maybe even more if certain stores accept trade-in coupon if there's trade-in coupon bonus like $400 available.

          • @JDMcarfan: I think it should be less. The difference between the $1200 voucher and the cancel fee is $200, but you also pay the 1 month with JB HiFi mobile. Even with the base iphone 17 it's less than 10%, better off buying gift card directly

        • JB won't offer that $1400 voucher deal on iPhone 17 series phones on launch date. Tel$tra won't fund it.

Furthermore, while that $799 deal on iPhone 16 seems good. There was a way to sweeten it with a price match, getting you a $200 JB Hi-Fi voucher (so kinda $600 if you consider that $200 JB voucher as cash). That won't happen on launch day either (no retailers will sell iPhone 17 with $200 discount on launch day).

If your friend wants an iPhone 17 series phone right away, discounted gift cards + price match is the only option (unless one of the Telcos come up with a really good postpaid deal).

        • oh shoot did they change the cancellation fee to $1000? Damn it's barely even worth the hassle now.

          • @adenbro80: Yes, up to $1000. Recently they changed it from $800 to $1000 during Pixel 10 series preorder. People who bought the phone earlier than later paid almost $800 for cancellation fee, but then others paid like almost $1000.

It's stated already up to $1000 for $99 plan

    • Do you get a proper tax invoice with this method?

      • Yes if you get into JB HiFi postpaid plan. Under your name or whoever get into the plan. I haven't tried Harvey Norman plan.

Usually the only real discounts on the new phones are the 10% Apple gift cards that come up from time to time. A couple of year ago I bought gift cards in July and sat on them knowing I was upgrading in Septermber of that year.

Although I can't see the last time that happened since 2023????

The best deal was in 2023 when we got 15% off ultimate giftcards deal, it was literally during the launch, and was pretty damm good!

  • Is there a way to get it outright, cheaper like Costco, or any other 24 x months interest free, as Latitude charges $262 in addition to iPhone 17 PM.

Yes, work for Apple or suck up to someone who works at Apple (to get staff discount).

  • From Apple, preorder and have it delivered on release day.

    $2K phone huh…

not this again lol…every single year…people got needs, got money…they do whatever they want to do with their own money

  • -2

Last time I bought the iPhone 16 Plus, Cosco was doing the iPhone for $50 less than officework. So I price matched cosco with office work for 5% off, planned the purchase so it was within 60 days of leaving australia for TRS refund claim; getting that 11% back on gst.

On top of that if your company allows you, you can salary sacrifice the device on top of all of that. Overall Saving possibly 35-40% off.

    • +1

i call this BS as costco you'd need a membership to buy goods from it.. vs officeworks.

that or your sales person at officeworks doesnt hv a clue what he/she/thy just did

      • -1

Why would they need to confirm that you have a membership? The item only needed to be in stock.

Apple and cheap is an oxymoron. People who spend 2k on any phone whether it is apple or android is pure stupidity in my view. Save yourself some money and get previous generation when 17 is released. Apple does not innvovate and every iphone looks the same.

    • +2

Any android with Square Front camera sensor right now?
I agree They dont innovate….but that was one new thing i dont think android phones have yet

Get category choice groceries (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/923754) to buy ultimate gc at coles https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/923476 or at aldi https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/923476 and use them at jb hifi or officeworks (with onepass), then claim TRS if you're travelling soon

    • +1

Or salary sacrifice at work if your employer allows it

      • Never done SS before, just emailed work to check if we have this policy..if we do, is it just basically you purchase the phone outright yourself or they do it on your behalf?

        • With my employer, we submit the receipt with manager approval, we get paid the full invoice amount, and then they will deduct the exGST amount from pre-tax salary in the next pay. Some colleagues have corporate card and they will use that card to pay and request salary sacrifice.

          • @RTY: Righto, thx for this. Will see what they come back with.

    • If we claim TRS and bring back device would their be any problems in the future?

      • If you ask the officers they might let you go, or if you have two people you should be within limit, however I don’t work there so my comments hold no value. I’m buying for overseas friend and definitely won’t bring it back.

  • +1

Wait for 12-24 months to get the best deals

  • +1

This is how I will it -

I want to upgrade from iPhone 13 to iPhone 17 Pro. I was thinking of trading in my current iPhone 13 (for $300 trade-in value) & using an Apple Gift Card from Coles/ Woollies 20X (reward points) to purchase. I am also travelling overseas for 10 days, so though I will get the 10% GST refunded as well.

I have seen so many posts of previous models where people buy from JB/TGG and cancel the contract, but I never understood how that works. Can someone explain how this works?

Here is the price I would pay with my method -

    iPhone 17 Pro = $1999
    Trade in iPhone 13 = $300
    Apple Gift Card from Coles / Woolies - approx. 10% of 1699 = 169.9
    Amount paid at store - 1999 - 300 = 1699 (with $169 worth of points for groceries, so $$1529.1)
    GST refund - 10% of 1699 = 169.9

So in Total it will cost me = 1359.2 (I want them to claim this as a work phone and depreciate it over 3/4 yrs to reduce taxes in future)

    How are others buying it?

I know for a few months Apple will stop Coles/Woolies from releasing the 20X Reward Points, so my other options will be to get 5% off Apple GC from the Bupa Rewards Portal

    • GST refund should be based off $1999.

Also GST refund is not 10%, close, but incorrect. GST is 1/11th of the total purchase price.

    • +2

If you claim GST and bring back the device isn't it a problem?

    • +1

JB Mobile deal, when available, provides a $1400 voucher which can be used to offset the phone purchase. However, it requires signing up for a 24 months plan at $99/month. Telstra used to charge ~$800 pro rata for early termination fee, but you generally have to pay 1 month even if you cancel it right away. So, it is roughly $535 off after the entire process. However, JB does do price match, so some people were able to get additional $200 off back in April 2025.

Basically, the rough benchmark (without factoring in discounted gift cards and TRS GST rebate):

      • iPhone 16 (128GB): $650
      • iPhone 16 Pro (128GB): $1000
      • iPhone 16 Pro (256GB): $1200

However, iPhone 17 based model this year has both 120Hz refresh rate screen update + storage upgrade + more. That said, for OZBers who managed to get iPhone 16 for $650 or lower back in April still got a very good deal I reckon.

There is virtually zero chance JB Hi Fi will offer that $1400 voucher deal for iPhone 17 series phones right away. No retailer will be selling iPhone 17 series phones with $200 discount right away to allow you to price match either. To make the matter worse, Telstra has increased the early termination fee to $1000 pro rata.

  • +4

I was just going to go with the 20x rewards points via Woolworths, whenever that happens again. Hopefully soon!

  • So no active 10-15% off gift cards that would work?
i.e Good guys or JB etc.

    • This will work as well. I am going ahead to buy with apple as I have some other older ipads + watch that I don't use. So will trade in all of them to get the maximum refund. JB has a trade-in program as well, but I'm not sure if they will take my other devices. Will go to both apple/jb to find who offers the most.

    • +1
  • You can always get a slight discount via JB HIFI gift cards, I think 4%?

  • Time to update from my iphone 13 pro.

Does apple give offers during Dec sales? and wait until Dec?

Vaguely remember they did free airpods worth $2xx last year.

  • Which country is iPhone 17 pro max made in?

  • I skipped the 15 and will be skipping this one too. Had zero interest in it. A pile of ugly garbage

    • Had everyone sicne the 3g

    • Cool.
