      Which is better?

      • I read O 365 vs Goog Doc showdown.

This part I agree the most:

This area is a slam dunk for Microsoft. Sorry, Google.

It's a Microsoft Office world. Even if you use an alternative office productivity suite like Google Docs or LibreOffice, the vast majority of the world uses Microsoft Office. The usefulness and value of your alternative suite is measured by how well it works with Microsoft Office. If files that are sent back and forth between partners, peers, and customers end up with formatting issues, it creates frustration and requires unnecessary effort to fix.

        Here are the formatting differences:

        • If on the other hand you are trying to collaborate and don't care about how it looks on paper as you're never going to print it then it's a different question and Google Docs work really work. e.g. if you have a shared shopping list where everyone in the house can update and change when things are bought, or when you're planning a holiday in a shared sheet.

Not a "bargain", it will always be this price.
    Belongs in forums.

It's like the ItsNotCheating and Office HUP 'bargains' which are always very popular here. Sometimes a bargain is just awareness it exists.

EDIT: I see it's been posted in forums (back in October), but I wouldn't of had a clue unless I saw this post.

Yep. I agree with the criticism (though i was unaware of the forum posts), but to me it's still worth the extra visability. The mods can make the descion.

I hear his friends call him "What-the".

  • I don't understand… this is a subscription service now? So you can only use Excel for 4 years then you have to keep paying for it?

I understand this model for things like AV, but this software isn't changing. How do they justify it?

    • The good old perpetual license is still avalaible. It is called Office 2013. For some guidance of what is right for you have a read of:

      http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01/30/office_2013_vs_offic…

      • Thanks, I was wondering what the difference between 365 and office 2013 was.

    • Microsoft say they will enforce subscription licensing after 10 years, in facts, it will come sooner as well as Windows OS as well, because MS thinks we never pay them enough.

      • Well, Office is cloud based.

If they are going to make Windows cloud based, they can forget all about it. My internet is sometimes unstable, so if my ISP craps out I might not even be able to get into my desktop, LOL.

I've read a lot about this, but can't seem to find an answer to 1 crucial question. Do I need to be 'always online' to use office365, or does it install physical copies of the software on my computer?

For example, if I want to go to the park and work on a powerpoint (& I don't have internet there), can I do this - or is it that the Office365 is only online?

      • +2

My understanding is that once the software installed (which is only done upon first use of each feature) then it does not internet at all to function. You will be able to use it as per normal. You will only need the internet to use the cloud stuff, and to update obviously.

  • Better deal: Buy Office University 2010 or Office for Mac University 2011 before April 30, claim the free upgrade to Office 365 University (4 years).

Same price, but then you have Office 2010/2011 to fall back on (compatibility purposes, etc.)

    • Smart, I might do this. Would be good to have it and not worry about it.

  • or possibly check your edu email if you qualify here for $15 Unlimited Licence

      Well technically that's a retail license :)
