Personally, I would rank BG3 as being my top preference.
Over Half a Decade Later, What Is Your Favourite Video Game of The 2020s?

Flight Sim
I thought that for it to be over half a decade later (for the period of 2020-2029), the clock would have started at the end of 2029, so ask me in 2034…
I quite liked the web portal the courts use in South Australia.
Black Ops 2. Specifically local co-op with all my buddies when were all young with no responsibilities living together in a sharehouse.
Good game but not in the 2020s
Pong.
I think that came out in 1972.
Is that a young jv?!
yes, with my son…
TIL
jv is a lady
I quite enjoyed Deathloop and Avatar, nothing else really caught my attention.
Deathloop was criticised for being on rails, but it honestly felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the 100+ hour open world games. The fun per hour value was great, and it was over before you got sick of the mechanics, minimal filler content.
Avatar is the prettiest game I've ever seen, I have no idea how they pulled it off. The sheer density of foliage and the massive render distance possible without your GPU melting down felt like a technical demo they turned into a game.
Shame the story wasn't great and the game felt padded out with repetitive missions, but the key moments where you first walk out into the forest and where you first get to fly around the floating mountains are just stunning.
I also really enjoyed Deathloop. It was a lot of fun.
I know it's an obvious choice but Expedition 33 really surprised me as I didn't think it would be my type of game.
There aren't many games over the past 5 years I can think of that have stood out as much - maybe Elden Ring? I need a better PC so I can find out if CP2077 has redeemed itself.
Last of Us Part 2
🤣
Woooooooosh…..
I do like pong though.
Same for me. And I played last of us part2 without even playing Last of us part 1.
Last of us part 1
You should ask for a refund for false advertising…
+1. I think this was the absolute highlight for me. Nothing else comes close to the quality of that game.
Monster Hunter World would have taken its place had it come out a couple of years later.
I was going to say huniepop but you specified 2020s… so I guess I will say huniepop 2
The game I played most on my phone this decade is I’d dial Linda’s phone number and hope she’d pick up. Haven’t been able to finish the game yet but I still get a rush every time I play.
Please Linda take me back
It’s not your fault, Stewie.
Are you still stuck on the quest line just after she found the random lipstick in your car?
Maybe he's already up to the council bbq brick heating side quest.
RDR2 last decade. RDR2 this decade.
Age of Empires IV
The game I have enjoyed the most is Riders Republic. Super underrated if you like sports/racing/skating games. I don't have the time or patience to slog through story-heavy games but it's fantastic fun to hop in for half an hour or so. Multiplayer is still very active for mass races.
I am a big Pokemon fan and enjoyed Legends: Arceus, fingers-crossed Z-A is good.
Also spent way too much time in Stardew Valley, I'll count it for the newer updates.
Rise of Kingdoms ~ still playing, from 2019
It's tough, I reckon so far the games in this gaming gen (PS5, XSX/S) don't hold a candle to last gen's.
Probably Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, or Baldur's Gate 3.I'm still working on my 2000s backlog…😬 Started Dragon Age Origins recently
Great game.
Minesweeper.
Solitaire.
Last of Us Part 2
Red dead 2 or the old Dota
Orginal Dota! does that still exist? didnt the guy sell it to valve
biggest blast from the past!!! playing it on WC3 battle net! man i miss being a kid playing online with my school mates! all trying to get into the same match!
Either last of us 2 or breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom. Death stranding 2 could be up there as well if I ever finish it.
FFX
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Expedition 33. One of the best games I have ever played. With one of the best soundtracks (across all media) ever.
BG3 is pretty good ill be honest it was too different from BG1 and 2 for me to love it the formula was more divinity original Sin like which i personally didnt like - BG2 SOA is my favorite game of all time so i wont lie i was dissapointed by BG3 it was fun but the third act and was a bit boring and the story was a bit convoluted. I think moving away from the Dark Spawn narrative that was very much the focus of the orginals made the game 'lose' a bit of the soul (pun intended if you played BG2) the orginals had - i understand why people loved it i mean we have had a lot of 'shit games' in the past 2 decades and 'very few' new great RPGs
for me the best game ive played was - probably go FFVII rebirth the most fun ive hard playing a game since the 00s but it was hardly an orginal game and i am a big fans the OG FF7
I need to say this the fact
Skyrim, GTA 5, Fallout 4 and the Witcher 3 are still being pumped out when it is almost 2026 tells you the poor state single player video games are in
I mean i still remember last year them trying to convince the world dragon age veilguard was 'good' and it was just a few people that didnt like it….6months later it was free on PS Plus and still no one liked it despite being free
These four are my GOATs, and I'll add Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 to the list as well.
C&C Remastered Collection
But I haven’t played Life is Strange: Double Exposure or Mortal Kombat 1 yet. Most modern games don't interest me.
Ballatro
The Witcher 3
That came out in 2015
Right up there as one of my favourite games of all time, but long outside of the 2020 cut-off of the OP
I think Cyberpunk 2077 (also fantastic but released December 2020) is a strong option
Fair call, but damn it deserves a mention just the same.
God of War Ragnarok
Ghost of Tsushima
Black Myth Wukong
Elden Ring
The First Berserker KhazanDamn, all in my backlog…
I need Ghost of Tsushima on xbox, looks great.
Balatro!
Black Ops 6 stole a lot of time from me.
Not saying its a great game (MW2 will always be the GOAT).But hey, it was enjoyable enough.
Raid Shadow Legends!
Even more enjoyable playing with Raycon earbuds!
Earth Defense Force 6
Last of us part II. It’s inevitable.
Heroes of Newerth
Since 2020……
Cyberpunk 2077
Baldurs Gate 3
Clar Obscur: Expedition 33
Elden Ring
Zelda: Tears of the KingdomLoZ TotK
Hogwarts Legacy.
Just stared playing this one whim. Really enjoying it and I'm not a huge harry potter fan but thinking of revisiting now.
Age of empires 2 de it's still releasing expansions !
I would have said that, but the base game came out in 2019
Expansions count probs !
Holocure: Save the Fans. I've played very few games that have been released in the 2020s.
I last gamed seriously in probably the early 2000s, playing Doom and Quake, ending with the MMO versions before stopping. Now 25 years older, I'm not sure I'd get back into it as intensely as I used to.
Any older gamers here that can provided insight to how their attitude to gaming/types of games may have changed over the years?
I still have UT99 installed on my rig - lol
I personally stopped bothering with playing new games seriously with Ghost Recon Wildlands… great open world shooter but i don't have time to get into new shooters every year now.
I have been playing Diablo 3 since it launched… the dumbed down ARPG mechanics suits my life over the past 13yrs… don't have time for the complexity of traditional ARPGs. And the fast gearing nature of D3 makes seasonal play bearable.
These days i will try more indie games like FAR lone sails. Slower adventure games like Life is Strange i will also play from time to time.
Modern AAA games are almost universally crap. PUBG recaptured some of the old spirit of online games for a brief period in beta, but that died pretty quick.
OTOH there is an enormous catalog of user-made content for doom and quake that far exceeds the quality of the original games. If you haven't, check out Arcane Dimensions for q1.

Animal Crossing. I don't care, I love it.Silent Hill and Resident Evil, especially the recent remakes. Loved every second playing these titles and was so sad when I finished them. Actually don't know what to play next, they have ruined every other game for me :(
Mass Effectâ„¢ Legendary Edition
Since 2020 - BG3, Cyberpunk and Elden Ring. Then daylight between whatevers next. Though to be fair, there's a hell of alot of games I haven't played. Some years I might only buy one new release game.
Civilisation IV
The 2020's are over yet, so it can't be 'Over Half a Decade Later'. I think you meant to say "Half-way into the 2020s. Whats your Favourite Game of the 2020s so far?"
Oh yeah, "Grammar Nazi 2: The Errant Hyphen and Misplaced Apostrophe" - great game!
I'm genuinely interested where you think an apostrophe would fix the meaning of the sentence?
I also don't think you know what grammar is.
Elden Ring and/or Witcher 3 (from… 2014).
Bought cyberpunk 2077 but yet to play, will wrap up Elden Ring first.
Witcher 3 still my favourite of all time
This thread is really reminding me how much I can't wait until my kids grow up more and that I need to start working less!
