Uber Charging Me Uber One Membership Fee Even Though I Cancelled Long Back

Hi Folks,

So I just found that Uber has been charging me their monthly Uber one membership fee $9.99 even though I cancelled it way back in march this year. I had tagged my secondary card as the payment method and hence didn't keep an keen eye on the transactions.

They have been charging me every month all the way until now even though I don't hold an Uber one membership with them. This is just plain daylight robbery. I have sent an message to Uber via their support portal to refund the money immediately and provide me an compensation for their illegal act. Has anyone had a similar experience before with Uber? Are there any regulations with respect to businesses making illegal/unauthorised transactions?

    You stylised CoMpEnSaTiOn incorrectly

    heard of charge back?

    • I am aware of that but that process takes it sweet time and also I would not want a business to escape without any repercussions after such a dodgy act.

Businesses wear the cost of a successful chargeback. But it is best to reach out to the business first anyway, usually the bank will ask for that.

Last time I did a chargeback they gave me the money upfront. It was pretty quick and easy.

How many Uber One accounts do you have?

26/9 - took advantage of 3 months free
21/6 - pointing out free trial offer was new members only
17/5 - pointing out you didn't get a portion of an offer for Uber One members

Paints the picture of someone who has had an active membership since March… Or an alt membership that Uber flagged

    • Wow that's some investigation. Btw I have only two accounts. You could probably say that is my secondary account(Set it up for my brother when he was visiting). All the comments that you highlighted are in relation to the primary account.

      • If your primary account shows Uber One membership is canceled, it's highly unlikely Uber would charge you.

Would it be possible that you have another account that might have an active Uber One membership? It would be almost impossible to find that out from the credit card statement, as it doesn't show which Uber One account it's linked to.

        • no can confirm I don't have any other account.

      • Plot thickens with the more valuable info on what is really going on.

dont give them a card that you cannot cancel easily. Keep all useless subscriptions on disposable revolut cards.

    • Does Uber accept disposable cards? I thought they didn't

They accept prepaid visa cards. I've added the activ ones and used them okay

        • Good to know

I have no paid for Uber One for a long time. There’s so many offers you can use

    • It was a free trial. It doesn't mean if you are availing a free trial you don't have to give them the card details. You still have to.

I had an issue recently where they charged me after a trial. I can't remember if I forgot to cancel it or not but I got billed when the trial ended. I just went to their support (which was stupidly hard to find) via the mobile app and they had an option to lodge a complaint about my exact issue. Basically got the refund after that.

    • same bloody hard to find. Did the same thing as you did and they have come back asking for a whole bunch of details to verify the charge actually took place

Chargeback usually leads to Uber blacklisting the account holder. Even justified refunds can lead to being banned

    • True that. That's why I didn't want to risk doing a chargeback and just contact uber directly

  • Did you cancel your free trials before the end of the trial?

    • Yes I did

  • I suspect you have more than one uber account.

    • I only have two and this particular card that got charged is only linked to one account

  • Any bargains

  • Had the same thing happen and they didn’t make the process easy.

Was also overcharged about $30 on an uber reserve booking for trip to airport a few months ago. Didn’t see the email with the higher fare until we arrived in Ho Chi Minh. Tried reporting it via app but got geo blocked.

Contacted when we arrived home and was told nothing they could do as it was over 30 days earlier. Told to update our review of the driver and give a bad rating but as we hadn’t given the driver a review due to geo blocking there was nothing to update.

As we used gift cards, wasn’t an option to do a charge back.

  • My bank has recently introduced a single use credit card (linked to primary card). I didn't think I would need it until I had a similar problem with Kogan membership. I finally got refund after multiple phone calls to Kogan & the bank. Don't give the #$@&*$# a chance to charge you unwanted extras - single use card in future for me.
