Buying Books in Australia? Find The Best Deal on Booko!

531

Handy web site that scrapes around 20 online sellers to find best price in AUD including shipping.

Easy way to decide whether to buy from amazon or fishpond for example (or book depository which seems much cheaper).

I don't know if it's a bargain itself, but the site just saved me $15 on a book :) So still an epic win

    • Agreed - not technically a bargain, but a great site to know about.

Added to price comparison sites wiki entry. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/list_of_price_comparison_si…

  • If it is a means to secure a bargain that you otherwise wouldn't have been aware of,, I think that qualifies this post as a bargain in itself…
P.S. Good work "Neil the eBay scam-buster".

  • Thankyou for the heads up !

  • Nice one! Some books even cheaper than book depository after postage. Just when I was in the mood for buying new books too. Good find!

  • Wow this really is useful! The only thing to remember is that shipping is calculated as if you order only one item each time. Amazon UK charges 4.99 GBP per order and then 2.99 GBP per item. This site would calculate the postage for one book as 7.98 GBP (~$18) whereas if you order a number of items at a time it could be less than half that. It's still an amazing site though so thank you!

Hi guys - thanks for the great comments about my site Booko. Glad you're finding it useful.

@Marlboro Man - You can click "Add to Cart" and Booko will calculate shipping for multiple books on all sites which sell the books in your cart. It correctly calculates the shipping for each site - IE - for Amazon a base rate plus a per item fee or Fishpond which has free shipping on orders over $50.

Feel free to send feed back / bugs / new stores to add etc to the email address listed on the site - [email protected]

    Cheers,
    Dan

  • nice site

  • This is an interesting one because it would seem more appropriate as a forum topic than a bargain post. Of course there are always anomalies and the positive response is no doubt well-founded. Imagine posting staticICE before anyone knew about it :)

Though things could possibly have gone the other way too … (see I Want That Flight and Bid My Loan for example).

      Agree.

However when I found out Booko was posted (it has been discussed before here a while ago), it has already got 30+ votes so I thought I'll just leave them here. I also need to find a way to convert a deal posting to forum posting…

While I think this is a great website, I kinda feel like there's double standards here on ozbargain. When I first started posting stuff here, I placed a website that I thought provided very well priced products but was shot down immediately as it wasn't a specific "deal". I think it's all a matter of taste, and I guess where the site appeals to more people, it would get approval even if it wasn't a deal.

Anyway, I'm all for submitting legitimate bargain sites that haven't been posted before as I'm guessing many of us don't visit the wiki pages as often as the homepage.

    • Fair observations thechengman, particularly:

I think it’s all a matter of taste, and I guess where the site appeals to more people, it would get approval even if it wasn’t a deal.

Anomalies are bound to happen. I don't necessarily think they're all bad, but the community's response will be characterised by inconsistency (since it is never exactly the same people voting under exactly the same principles and mindset), which does potentially result in "double standards".

Perhaps something to be discussed further in the forums and eventually addressed in the Deal Posting Guidelines that should be read before posting any deal. (Perhaps even integrated into the submission process itself.)

[…] I’m guessing many of us don’t visit the wiki pages as often as the homepage.

Or the blog, where Booko was first posted. I often forget OzBargain has a blog!

  • @ Dkam - Ahhh so you can - that will teach me not to read properly before commenting! In that case… excellent!

  • This is the first bargain I've posted. I'll remember to look at the wiki and previous deals next time.

Still, it looks like more people noticed it this time around.

  • I discovered this site just the other day, reading the blog. Great site, will keep an eye on it (well done dan!)

  • it's great! thanks for your info

  • I've been using (and loving) this since it was mentioned on ozbargain a little while ago. Everything I've got has still been from betterworld but theres one thing coming up that I want to get that bookdepo has cheaper. Its definitely saved me a heap of time.

On a dif note There was an anomaly on one of betterworlds codes on Xmas day and instead of giving a 10% discount it gave a straight out $20 discount. I probably should of posted it here but figured if heaps of orders started going through they may do a dell on all the orders :(

    • -1 to you for not posting that deal around xmas.

      Shame on you..

      • ha, I deserve it! But I did get in three orders, all shipped so a total of US$60 off :) so +1 for betterworld

  • This place is like being a kid in a candy store, cheers

  • Wow. That's great. If I want to buy one of my own books, it's cheaper through booko (thanks to cheap shipping) than it is from my own publisher with my 40% author discount!

    • that is crazy…

  • awesome

  • very useful site… DKAM - you should do more of these price comparison websites :)

  • very useful indeed.
