after seeing HTC Velocity 4G for $199 at DICK SMITH (still has stocks in store), this phone is becoming less appealing for many people.

    • That's understandable, but not great for people who want to use the Optus network. That's the only reason I didn't get one of them myself.

      • +1

I thought some people said the HTC Velocity was unlocked and worked with Optus SIM?

        • The issue wasn't that, it was the 900MHz 3G band. Optus uses it as one of its two bands for 3G coverage, but the HTC Velocity 4G doesn't do 900MHz.

        • +2

Still fine for metro areas. Been using a 2100MHz phone in Brisbane for the past few years with no issues.

Only a problem if you're going rural/non metro.

        • +1

i bought the velocity because this deal had ended at jbs. Compared to the previous phone I have for optus the signal strength does seem to be down when compared side to side.

          I probably should have waited…

Being a mobile phone, I decided I wanted one that would work even when on holidays down the coast or out in the country. As a Virgin, having the HTC Velocity wouldn't have done that for me.

        • +12

if i read that right - you are a young phone that has never had sex and choose to work on your holidays.

        • I was in Mallacoota Xmas time, my Telstra mobile broadband SIM was useless becasue too many people were using it.

      • +1

Note that its only missing the 3G 900MHz band but still has the 900MHz 2G band, so in most areas you'd still have voice/sms/slow data for the days when you're on holiday.

Overall the HTC is a better phone, plus its $50 cheaper. So for me who spends 95% of the time in a metro area, its a no brainer.

        YMMV

        • That's fine, as long as people go into it with their eyes open. My experience has taught me not to trust that 2G data will work when I need it to. So I for one wasn't prepared to make that sacrifice.

      • HTC handset works fine with Optus-based "Live Connected" SIM.

Marked Telstra on packaging & some screens, the handset is UNLOCKED (from K-Mart).

(K-Mart staff -tell- you it's locked to Telstra, perhaps as it's the safer answer to give… but it's really UNLOCKED.)

It also arrived pre-upgraded to Android 4.0.2 (which may mean - for us - that MyNetFone's free Android softphone won't work (It does work on an HTC Cha Cha, that's based on Android 2.3.x, however.)

        • +1

          Just use csipsimple instead

    • +1

k-mart still has velocity for $199 too.

      • +4

K-Mart let us pay "on time" - ie, so we could get ~ $10 back from ING Direct's "Wave & Save" promo…

        Here, on-time meant:

t = 0: Use "Wave & Save" to pay $99 (to get ~ $5 back from ING Direct)

        t = 30 Sec: … pay $99 (for another ~ $5 back…)

        t = 60 Sec: Pay the last $1 in CASH :-)

(Cost of handset drops to ~ $189)

This is proof that OzBargainers are the most deviously brilliant people in Australia.

        • Only $9 saving if you do the math. But you can use ING paywave to buy Wish gift card from Woolies and get the same sort of saving from DSE.

would be great deal if 200

  • apparently the RAZR is very top-heavy so it may be awkward to use with one hand

    • +1

Not so, it's only very slightly top heavy and I find it to be very comfortable in one hand. The 'bump' section at the top gives my index finger something to grip. I find it more comfortable to hold than a Galaxy SII.

  • its doest have the 900mhz band that optus uses too. what about the Motorola Razr V what bands does it have?

  • +1

    .

  • Great phone. Love the back Kevlar pattern and color. Hot it for my gf. The screen is also great. Very Krispy and sharp given its res. made me jeleous having the ios 4s phone. But now I've got the iPhone 5. If the s3 has a 1920x1080p screen ill swap sides.

    • ummmm you mean the S4?
S3 has been out for some time.. 1280x720 res screen

  • Anyone know what the battery life is like on this one? Reports of the HTC V4G are all bad…

    • I was worried about that too but I figured I'd buy a better battery if needed. So far, 2 days, I don't think I'm going to have to worry about it. Moderate usage on wi-fi I don't live in a 4G area.

  • +1

Struggling to decide to buy this phone or the velocity. Being on the optus network makes me think the Razr is the way to go, but seems like the velocity is an all round better phone and its 50 bucks cheaper.

  • +1

For those tossing up between this and the $199 HTC Velocity from DSE, better be quick - most DSE stores are all out of the Velocity, and you can't buy it online.

    • Can still get at Kmart :)

    • Within a 30 km radius of me 5 out of 6 DSE stores are showing stock on their website. So this information is fairly misleading.
