  • Best price on Staticice too! good deal!

  • I expect ATI cards will be cheaper across the board soon as ATI has announced price drops on the 4870X2. Still a good price for a decent brand.

  • While its a great deal, according to staticice MSY are going to be selling a 4850 for $209.00. It might be avaliable now or by the next PDF update (normally a day)

  • Good price from a reputable seller.

  • I'm using EVGA 8800GT, would I see much improvement with this card? I use a dual monitor.

    • +1

Not really, they are very similiar in performance. Not worth it unless you step up to HD4870.

      • The HD 4850 came out months ago so my memory is hazy, but I can't recall any reviews concluding it was very similar to the 8800GT. Were you thinking of a particular review?

Taking a look at AnandTech (first resource off the top of my head), the HD 4850 outperformed the 8800GT at all three resolutions in all seven games tested. Running the numbers through calc.exe, its approximate advantage over the 8800GT was around 10% at the lowest (Oblivion) and over 37% at the highest (Bioshock).

Tried to look at The Tech Report but they didn't even include an 8800GT in their testing - which is not surprising since they concluded: "The current GeForce 9800 GTX is simply no match for AMD's latest mid-range offering, and Nvidia's surprise, the GeForce 9800 GTX+, has quite a bit of ground to make up if it hopes to be competitive."

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend upgrading from an 8800GT to an HD 4850 (depends on individual perceptions of cost/benefit), but I can't recall seeing anything that remotely suggested they are very similar in performance.
