Damn!!! I bought mine about a month or so ago…

    • +1

      28 degrees?

      • +27

No, these are plasma screens, they run at about 45 degrees (bit warmer)

        • +4

I can't work out if you're being serious or not

        • shmahoo serious? I've never seen it.

  • How does this compare with the PS51D550 model that was on offer at about the same price a year ago?

    • I have this one obviously, and had the D550 for a few months recently.

Much the same really, except this one has the SMART features, you can install PLEX on it amongst many other apps.

As for picture quality, they say slightly better blacks.. eh, who knows.
It also doesn't seem to reflect as much as the D550.

  • It's a bit of an energy hog.

  • For the extra price is it better getting this or the LG deal posted a few days ago ?

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/94540

extra $150 for smart tv and 3d worth it ? quality wise anyone know ?

    • +1

This one is a Smart TV + 3D It all depends how often you use these functions. I would say it is worth it. Much better TV.

    • Definitely better picture quality than the LG, it has basically the same picture quality as their flagship E8000 the main difference is the E550 has no anti-reflective coating. The LG has no AR filter also so both can look washed out/dull in a bright room.

    • +1

If you're willing to pay $150 to have an extra inch :-p

      • +2

People pay a lot more than that for That extra inch

    • If I was to choose today, it would be the LG and only because the bezel is thinner.
I have no need for smartness or 3d-ness in a TV.

Once you configure either to your preferences and room, rest assured you'll be happy.

  • I was just checking this deal out at exactly the same time as when you posted. Great price.

  • +2

    This is a brilliant deal.
Paying similar or even more money for no-name brands that do far less.
    I bought one.
    (And I already have one)

  • Does this have wireless?

    • Yes

  • Besides being a thicker tv than LCDs is plasma screen quality have a major diff from LCD?

    • +5

      Can of worms.

I say yes. Plasma is my preferenece. LCD feels like its burning my retinas.

    • +1

This TV is much thinner than my cheaper 50" LCD sanyo. I think led LCD TVs are thinner again. But really we are talking 1cm difference here

    • +2

I never understood the appeal of advertising how thin these tv's are getting. when either the base or wall-mount eliminates any of the 'thickness' benefits anyway ;)

      /thats what she said…………

      • haw haw haw.

  • Hmm, it uses Active 3D, so it means you require those expensive battery powered glasses..

    • +1

I think it comes with two pairs anyway…

      • +3

hopefully you only have 1 friend ;)

        • Or 4 housemates. Oh well, apparently active 3D is better.

        • I don't, so I guess one pair will be kept as a spare for me.

    • You can get Samsung Active 3D glasses for $29 from JB - cheaper on ebay

      • -1

$29 at BBB too; it's on the linked page, to the right of technical specs.

    • how often would you use 3D anyway?

      • I couldn't tell you seeing as I don't own a 3D TV, but probably every now and then, and it would be good to have extra sets.

  • +2

I have to do my community service and tell people to buy this TV. For the price I challenge you to find a better deal (ozbargain or otherwise). Had it for 6 months and friggin love it. Just don't use it for gaming facing a window, bad reflection.

  • -1

    64" for $1399

    • +7

      1kg of apples for $4.99 :)
P.S: O.P. great find! Thank you

      • +2

Ummm, no bargain here. 1kg oranges $2.99 @ my local

        • Free off the neighbours tree. They pee on it so the oranges are always juicy

    • What where???

  • +1

I returned one of these a few months ago. Very laggy when changing channels, PQ isnt all that great. EPQ doesnt work all the time, also not that good in a lit up room.

    • +2

Mine isnt laggy, sometimes the Guide just takes a while to load, but not often.

  • what's the 600Hz subfield specification with these plasmas?

does that help with motion blur or something? cos i can definitely see flicker in LCD tvs with refresh rates < 100

  • $200 postage
& no I don't live in the boondocks

    • Get it delivered somewhere free and drive out there to pick it up. I.e. parliament house

P.s. wonder if that is possible

      • haha, yeah it was free to ACT.
No, you need security clearance to get in there. Mines gone now :(

  • Can I use this with my media centre pc (mythtv) ? It will always work with vga. Sometetimes edid info mucks things up for dvi or hdmi. So basic questions are - does it have vga input, failing which does it have dvi input - or only hdmi input ?

    • Just checked specs on the Samsung site and definitely no dvi or vga input. I reckon it will probably work fine with this tv though. I had a problem 5 years ago when setting up my 1366x768 Panasonic(as non-standard computer display ratio, not being exactly 16:9) - couldn't use the hdmi, had to use vga. But since this is a standard 16:9 it should be fine. I reckon I'll take the chance. Just calling retailers to see if they'll beat or match the price delivered. Prefer buying bricks and mortar in case of warranty issues.

      • +1

If anyone else is interested, this is from the manual -

        NOTE
•For HDMI/DVI cable connection, you must use the HDMI IN 1 (DVI)jack.
        • For PCs with DVI video out jacks, use an HDMI to DVI cable to connect the DVI out on the PC to the
HDMI IN 1 (DVI)jack on the TV. Use the PC's speakers for audio.
        • PC (D-Sub) input is not supported

  • Torn between this and this…

    http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/blacktown/tv-dvd-players/50-s…

    Any suggestions..?

    • +3

Definitely this TV. The gumtree one isn't even full HD…

    • +2

Without a doubt, the new one.

That 2nd hand one is 3 years old, expensive and not full hd.

  • Got one! Thanks

  • Does this vendor have a decent reputation on ozbargain ? Can't find a particular thread / page on them.

    • If you click on the Deals & Coupons link in the Related Store section below the description, it shows all the previous deals from this shop.
Seems there's a fair few deals from these guys with lots of + votes, & the general vibe I get off Ozbargainers is that Big brown box is pretty good. YMMV

      • -3

        hehehe he said 'big brown'.

      • Thanks

  • just wondering about this Samsung TV… if i were to hook up my PS3, BluRAy through to the TV, and I assume there would be an optical out from the TV to my AV… would it pass the sound correctly to the AV receiver, or would it down mix it to 2 channels only? (sorry cant remember what is the proper term for it)

    • +1

Normally you plug all your devices into your receiver and then your receiver into your TV. Receivers are specifically designed to act as a switching hub for all your devices.

  • I am tempted but I have a large glass sliding door behind our lounge so reflections would be an issue.
I've been waiting for a JB 15% off TV's and thinking I might get this. http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/plasma-lcd-tvs/tvs-led-lcd-52…

    • maybe they use the same panel as big brand names, but brands like Hisense/Hiteker etc scare the cr4p out of me.

That one does have a 3 year warranty however.

  • Or get Harvey's to beat it…after all…that's their NEW policy.

    Make Gerry PAY!

    • +2

      From HN's policy

The Best Price Guarantee does not apply where:

      (a) the competitor has an online store only, and does not have a physical retail store in Australia;

      • WoW, thanks for clarifying.

  • Waiting for 65" Panasonic deals :(

  • -1

    just bought one cheers

  • nice TV I have one however, bear in mind this has TERRIBLE daylight performance and is highly reflective. You need a room where you can control ambient light reflections.

    • +2

Pulling down blinds will be ok ? Any worse than other plasmas ? (We've never really had an issue with our 5-year old 50 inch panasonic, even in daylight).

      • -5

you won't be able to see anything unless your tv is in a room with no windows

        • +3

I have this in my bedroom with 2 big windows, no problems with the blinds closed.

        • Thanks for that.

      • would also like to know how the reflective issue compares to older plasmas though? I have a five year old 43inch viera and it's fine in my flat…surely plasma's haven't gotten MORE reflective over time, or..? a lot of people were saying the same thing about the Panasonic ut50 but I don't know if it's just in comparison so other new higher-end tvs, or whether it could end up looking worse than my old one..I don't remember anyone discussing the issue back in the day

  • Just a side note - plasmas CAN get dead/bright pixels. Had my older LG plasma screen replaced twice under warranty.

    • Just a side note - LCDs CAN get dead/bright pixels.

  • Already have one of these, the remote is a bit flakey, still tempted to get another one for the bedroom

  • Got mine last month for $790.
Exellent TV and heater in winter(says 325 watts on rear), reflection is less of a problem the closer
    you sit to the screen.
It's actually thin compared to older LCD TVs.
The 3D glasses use a small button battery that I easily take out when not in use, just try not to touch the glasses screens with Ur smudgy fingers.
Also the 3D glasses reflect any light from behind disrupting Ur immersion so needing night time in a dark room for 3D.

    • +1

It uses an average of 200w. I know because I own one and I used a power use power meter from Jaycar to measure over a week.most of the time it was saying 175 watts.
I don't know what people are on about heat, Mine gets warm not hot.

  • Any recommendations re wall mount-brackets ? Whether the one they offer / recommend with this deal is also a good deal ? Also any advice / experience re using their wall-mount service for $249 or DIY instead ? I suppose I could put the $249 towards some power tools and my wife and the nanny should be able to hold the $25kg between them - or does that sound foolish ? Need to get it mounted immediately after delivery because with 2 kids under 3 it is too dangerous not to have it mounted for any period of time.

    • +1

you want a tilt one so you can get to your cables, i got mine for around 25 bucks on ebay from selby acoustics, it does the job and is probably exactly the same as the 75 dollar one.

I can recommend this one! Got it 2 years ago(posted on ozb from a different ebay seller). Easy to mount,(i managed to lift and "hook" my 51" Samsung all by myself) and very good quality!(2 types of vesa screws included)

      • Thanks for the input. I presume at this sort of weight you only get tilt brackets rather than swivel and tilt?

  • boo…. JB is not going to price match BBBox :(

rang a few stores here in WA, and no one is willing to do it

    • why would you want to price match elsewhere when you can get it delivered for the same price?

      • Guess if local JB can price match, I can get it at good price, plus some "local" support should there be any issues…

  • +1

Man this is an awesome price. I bought mine around 3 months ago for $800…

It was surprising to find that it has built-in Wifi. Also one of the USB ports can supply 1A, which is enough to power my Rasp-Pi running XBMC.

    • Same vendor. Have a look under item condition. Mentions BBB.

    • Site looks the same to me
      Same seller?

  • +2

The Samsung 64' 3D deal is back with better price than the HN one few weeks ago…
    http://www.bigbrownbox.com.au/samsung-ps64e550-series-5-64-i…

    • How can they even do a 64" for that price, it's madness? One of the posters on this site got the 64" and had problem upon problem with it though - bad comments on whirlpool too regarding Samsung re: Buzz noises and reflection.
Still it's nearly a full thousand dollars cheaper than the Panasonic.

Anyone know where the 64" E550 is on demo so I can check it out in Melb CBD?

      • +1

It is not $1000 cheaper than the Pana, you are comparing it to the ST50, you should be comparing it to the UT50.

    • -1

      Apples $4.99 a kilo?

  • just bought one myself, thanks OP.

  • +1

I pulled the trigger on this baby - $649+$249 full wall mount installation from http://www.homeitande.com.au/(Melbourne installer) comes to $898 delivered and installed Just in time for footy season!

    • That looks like a good price for wall mounting including the bracket. Do you know if it is a tilt bracket ? Can anybody recommend an installer in Sydney Eastern Suburbs area ?

      • Yep it's a tilt bracket install with no wires visible - try whirlpool for installers in Syd, goodluck!
