I don't see the point with 3G versions anymore, when anyone with a Smartphone can enable Tethering. Saves having to get a separate SIM card on a Data plan.

Depends on your use for the tablet, if its only used on bus and wifi at home, be fine. If you want to use it camping or on long trips, well no point using tethering if will make 90% of phones flat in 3 hours.

        • Right, i wish they would make a long battery life phone for the sole purpose of tethering.

        • Interesting name…hopefully you are not the offspring of the fallen ones.

        • Just get a spare battery if your phone has a removable one. $2 on ebay for a spare S3 battery.

@highdealer: Isn't that what portable WiFi hotspots are for?

EDIT: Though I guess that defeats the purpose, and you'd just get a 3G tablet. Just need to weigh up what's important to you really :/

        • A tablet without 3G is useless and pointless at least to me. If I only use the tablet at home with Wi-Fi then i will not need a tablet and better off using my real PC.
3G is really handy when I am on the trips. Only $40 different between Wi-Fi and 3G at Bing Lee. Just my personal view. Please forgive me if I offended anyone. Sorry

The new 8inch Note is going to be a tablet with phone capabilities, not just 3G. If it is under $800, I will probably get one. hate carrying around two devices when I should just be able to carry around one with some earphones plugged in.

      • Battery on the phone drains pretty fast with tethering

      • If you are actually going to remove the tablet from your house to go on a holiday, its a great idea to get an actual 3g one, with those new kogan/tpg prepaid data plans, or when your going to a different country, makes it pretty inexpensive to slap in a sim for the month or however long you will need it.

In saying that, I rarely use anything except wifi on my 3g, really think about whether you will use it outside your house, think about how you will carry it and when you will use it etc, to decide whether it is worth the extra dough.

ITT: every ozbargainer now has a nexus 7 :P

    • +1

      LOL, very tempted now.

    • to view ozbargain?

    • Not me. But I am thinking of getting one! Especially since I will be travelling o/s this June.

      • other people in this thread have suggested a new version in may

Wifi only + pocket wifi is the best way. 3G model is pointless, since 4G is here already.

    • I heard telstra 4g pocket wifi only lasts 4 hrs of use

  • I need a Nexus 9 or 10, the 7 is too small :/

    • 10 is also triple the price and sold out unless eBay.

      • To correct you, it's all fully back in stock (as of yesterday or something). Both models can be bought from Google right now with no shipping delay.

        • Indeed it is.

So it's double the price in that case and then some.

      • from memory the price of nexus 10 is $569 + $25 shipping. how is that triple the price?

        • Checked eBay recently since it has been sold out forever until yesterday as Alzori pointed out?

And my comment bet yours by a minute before adjusting my statement.

      • Yeah true perhaps but honestly I'm not much of a tablet person, I don't see much use for them - the Nexus 10 however has a really nice screen and could be somewhat useful I guess.

7" Just seems too small, 10" too big, I know it's only an inch but I think 9" could be good - I'd like to see something under 500 grams. I think this will happen in the next few years.

    • Just a heads up, if you type or use chat a lot, the 7 inch is a lot more typing friendly in portrait mode than a 10 inch tab will ever be.

    Fonepad coming soon - 3g version $250
    http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/25/asus-fonepad-announced/

    • I like that. But let's hope the battery is good.

      • Even though its single core x86 its performance leave most most mobile cores for dead, chances are someone will work how to run windows this badboy using a bootloader

        • No rear camera though, would of been ideal if people were to use it to replace their phones as well.

This is such a good deal I almost bought it even though I have no use for it. Luckily I was able to talk some sense into myself.

    • +1

You made me see sense too. I was going to buy it for my wife to use as an eReader so I could get the iPad back. But better to save the money and put it towards the new new new iPad (the 9.7 inch with the thin bezels of the 7.9 inch). ;)

      • Waiting for that one as well

  • The next gen Nexus 7 is rumored rolling out on May. Will wait as I got an ipad already

  • I would buy this if I didn't get the Tab 7.7, both great deals.

  • Couldn't refuse, bought!

For those wondering, "Your $20 cash back will be deposited into your PayPal account within six (6) weeks of the promo end date."

      Delete, Found the page.

  • Should I…..? Is this any good for Uni students (Loading up lecture notes, microsoft office files, pdf, general usage on the train, etc)

    • Viewing eBooks/.pdf files and notes are fine.
If you want to write notes however, probably not ideal but doable.

    • I've been thinking about this, but if I did I'd have to go the full 10". It feels slightly more like a textbook that way (still missing the other half then though… might have to get 2 and put them in a case so it looks like a textbook)

  • Anyone know how much these are going for in Thailand? Going to hold off until i head over.

  • Just buy it and put your old one on ebay.
Repeat process every time a new device or good deal comes along

  • Can I get GST back on this if I am flying out of country at the end of April?

    • +1

no minimum is 300 for TRS, if you want to claim tax back spend another $31 dollar but then you only get $27 back. If there is somethin else you need then it will be worth it if not then dont bother.
And purchase must be made within 30 days of departure date.

  • I don't know much about tablets, so I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with.

    1. From what I've googled, it looks like this doesn't have a micro SD card… is it still possible to use this to put photos on to then upload to the internet? I found a thing called a USB SD card reader that looks like it could work.

    2. Is it possible to read your own pdfs and play your own movies (VOB format) on this? Through the USB connection?

    • +1
      1. Have a research on "usb OTG" (on the go), i'm pretty sure it does this. Either way you just plug the device into your laptop (via micro usb) and add the files that way. Or sync via dropbox, wifi, ftp etc.
      2. Read your own pdf's - yes, vobs, im not sure, i dont think so. Most people convert their dvd's to either avi or mkv. My tablet (asus transformer) can watch both types.

Keep in mind, the screen is only 7 inches diagonally. Fitting text on the screen might be difficult. ebooks these days come in special ebook formats that allow you to adjust the text size easily. PDFs are limited, and therefore harder to read. I have a 10" tablet, it's okay for pdfs, but obviously better for pdfs that can adjust the font size without zooming in and out.

      • Thank you very much!

  • Couldn't resist :-). Picked up one from city store on my way back from home to play with..

  • For those of you who didn't want to wait for delivery, I got mine for $250 at a Retravision store in WA. Most of the other major stores wouldn't price match it to the cash back offer though. Good luck!

    • Dicksmith delivery is typically fast 1-2 days so its not much of a wait

      • True that. Just works out better for me. I get it for the weekend and don't need to wait for cash back which might have ended after the first 700 customers. :)
