I was going to buy an S2, then waited for the S3 release for the price to drop. It really never happened. S2's hit an all time low a few months prior to the S3 launch, then took months and months before they re-fell to that price.

Yes, it's still better than many phones, but it's been out a year now. That's old in tech terms. It's also being replaced, which kind of rubs it in more.
According to benchmarks the international version of the S3 is more powerful than the iphone 5 while the american verion is slightly lower. The american version of the S4 on the other hand performed almost 2times better than the iphone 5. I havn't come across the benchmarks for the international S4 but with an octa-core processor it should be vastly superior.

It's not a real octo-core, that's like calling a tegra 3 penta-core. It's 2 quads joined together. But yeah, the Cortex A15 quad is going to make it vastly superior. The v7(?not sure on this one..) is there for power savings.

Since all previous Galaxy S phones came out with a launch price of around AUD800, I'm guessing S4 will also carry an Australian RRP of either $749 or $799.
P.S: US price of S4 (16GB) is estimated at $579 only $20 less than launch price of S3 a year ago.
So we are paying the same ripped-off price? I wonder if the US version works in Australia. If so I might get one when I travel to the States later this year.

You're taking it too personally man. S3 and iPhone 5 are of the same gen. They were the flagships for Samsung and Apple for 2012. Each device has its own advantages and own features. There's no better device here. There's only a better device for you. Having said that, S3 is on sale for $418. If the iPhone 5 was on sale for a similar price, not only will be on the front page, it'll probably get far more votes.

Before you say anything extra; I have an iphone, use a windows 8 laptop and have a kogan tv with ICS. I love them equally an hate them the same. If I you would have me to pit them against each other, it will be IOS (more polished), Windows 8 (offers choice) android (customizable)
I am talking in regards to people whom cannot live without bias. Don't get me wrong, bias is a form of human nature. It is just that some people take it too far with their personal vendetta towards a particular platform. In my experience, Android users are worse than their apple counterparts.

S3 has micro sd slot and removable battery. Nexus 4 has latest android and direct updates.
S3 also has a much better camera, a larger usable screen space, optional 4G (not the one advertised here) and few other minor features (FM radio, split screen apps etc).
As for updates, its not too far behind either. S3 is already rumored to get Android 5.0 and possibly even more.
Samsung galaxy tab has proprietary plug that looks like an apple one but is just even more useless. Mega fail.

I own both so I think I can answer this.
S3 has a better camera, FM radio and more features (some of which are actually useful).
Nexus 4 has a more premium feel, a better screen (fonts are sharper, colors are more accurate, MUCH more brighter then S3) and the performance is a LOT better then the S3.
I am currently using the Nexus 4 as my daily driver and even though I miss all the S3 features and the FM (I use an app to stream radio now) I cant get my self to go back to the S3. Ended up giving it to my wife.
The camera on the S3 is probably the best I've used on a phone so far so if thats important to you then obviously go with the S3, otherwise I thing Nexus 4 is a better option.
battery life on the S3 is better but only if you enable the power monitoring mode, but yeah, with that on the S3 will give your probably an hour extra, if not a bit more
@tariq not sure if you noticed, but newer phones generally are better than the 'previous gens' of phones from other manufacturers… though the only exception is apple.

Part of iPhone's success IS their pricing. People get a sense of 'swag' when they buy the phone, the higher the price = the higher the 'swag'
as a previous owner of htc, i've given up on HTC, they are hopeless on delivering proper firmware on time, or keep updates for their models that are just barely 1 year old.

What is your perception of "current phone"? The s4 is hardly better than the HTC ONE or the Xperia Z. The only good thing about Samsung is a removable battery.
Main issue with either is low battery life, the Samsung is using a new architecture idea of using 2 different chipsets (a low power usage quad chip for low intensity tasks and another for high intensity), to minimize battery life. I haven't heard of a phone like that, its a big step to addressing the battery charge issue of the top end smartphones.
in other words,if you are a power user the phone will die before you get home in the evening,if you use it for low intensity tasks,it will live,so what's the difference,comparing to previous generation?
umm no. Firstly a "power user" is generally someone that uses things like keyboard shortcuts, control panel (or equivalent), installs os's, runs custom roms, etc.
If you are someone that needs alot of processing power well then this makes that available when needed but the vast majority of users will only need that intermittenly. So while they dont require more processing low energy mode is used. It happens seamlessly in the background. Desktops have been switching between discrete and dedicated graphics for a couple years with intel and amd this is no different.

For those who already have the s3, how have you found the durability of the phone?
Reasons for asking:
The LCD, digitiser and glass are all fused together on the s3
There are mixed reports as to how good durable it is
Cost of repair of cracked screen on s3 ranges from $260.00-$300.00
There is a cheap DIY glass replacement that does not seem 100% foolproofHave only dropped my phone once since I got it about 9 months ago. No problems, been in case the whole time (though it is tempting to remove it as it adds bulk). If you look after your phone then dont worry it will hold up just fine.
Samsung Galaxy phones have never really been durable. Mostly because they use plastic for the body rather than aluminium.
Because the plastic is easy to deform and flexes easily under pressure, there's a higher tendency for the screen to crack. If you drop the phone (without a phone case) you're pretty much guaranteed to crack the screen.
