Need to find the best Telstra carrier deal for teenager - plan.

Son wants a new plan, have been using Optus, but really often can not get any service. He 'of course' wants a good phone iphone 5 or similar, and unlimited txt some interenet, but facebook is free with most plans, and need to have $400 calls included I guess. I do not think Telstra is the best deal, but what is? thanks

How much is the budget per month? forget a plan, these days prepaid is often a much better deal, eg. telstra prepaid cap encore is $40/month for 600Mb data and $510 of calls (in telstra funny money) plus you can use your original $40 to buy extra data or SMS or call packs. If that's not enough data you can get 700Mb additional data for $20, but not at extra cost, the $20 is taken out of the $40 you already recharged it with. Check the thread on whirlpool for all the little tricks to maximise value. The lowest cap encore deal is $30/month.

Failing that try Boost or one of the telstra resellers (Kogan, Aldi etc).

tell him to buy his own bloody iPhone if that's what he wants, as for plans, Kogan or Aldi's unlimited plan would be suitable as long as you're living in a metro/large regional area.

Hi is a lucky boy, if you are paying for all this

  • +2

if hes a teenager hes old enough to work

yes but why so nasty?? wow.. he is paying, I am looking for the best deal, he is an 1st year apprentice and money is limited. so value for money is important, and it sounds like prepaid as suggested it the best option. thanks

  • Samsung galaxy Ace 2 (2 is important) looks v good and about $230. Aldi uses Telstra network (except very remote locations) and coverage looks v good. And no contract !!

    • It is unfortunately priced a little too high for it's specifications. A better alternative would've been the RAzr V when it was on special and the HTC Velocity for $199 at KMART.

      • +1

Agreed. I don't get why people keep recommending low to low-mid end Android phones to people (Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 for $230?? - seriously???).

Recommend the right Android phones so people will enjoy Android, not craving for a better phone (or ended up disliking Android for the wrong reason - subpar hardware) and wanting to switch to iOS.

Bear in mind that, like it or not, most iOS apps run smoothly on the old single core iPhone 4. With Android, most, if not all single core phones don't run so well.

  • Unfortunatley, he is wanting an iphone, may be happy with 4s but really wants a iphone 5, thanks

iPhone's are so 2 years ago. Nowadays its about the Samsung. (Or HTC), Xperia Z from Sony is pretty impressive too (Waterproof Phone)

I remember 2 years ago, resale value of iPhones were awesome, e.g. iPhone 4 came out, iphone 3s still could sell for a very good price like only $150 cheaper. Nowadays iPhone 5 came out, iPhone 4s resale value is like 50% off.

Everybody has a iPhone now, which makes you less special for having one haha….

Samsung on the other hand, now has pretty good resale value.
      Samsung Galaxy S2 - Approx $300.

Too bad that Apple is falling behind in the times now, Hardware on it is about 3 generations old. iPhone 5 extremely disappointing (LOL 5 = 4s + 1 extra row of icons)….

So if your teenager wants to be the popular kid in the block, he'd prob get a Galaxy S3 or a Note 2… just show off a few of the functions on that to his friends and they'd be OMFG THAT IS AWESOME…

      • +3

        ^ Worst advice ever.

if he wants to be a popular kid on the block he wouldn't so picky and spend so much time on a bloody phone

  • The telstra pre-paid encore is a good deal as you get free phone calls and text from 6pm to 6am plus $220 credit. There are always cheap $10 starter packs going if you are willing to change your phone number every second month.

  • Sounds like something I would do as a bargain hunter.. not my teenager unfortunately, the whole world is about facebook and phones thanks anyway.

  • I am lucky to have a teen that is not interested in Facebook ("Fakebook"). As we are all using post-paid Vodafone plans … and have no problems, he has a pre-paid (International plan) which costs $20 a month, unlimited Vodafone to Vodafone minutes any time, the $20 funds if unused gets rolled over to the next month if recharged by end date. The texts cost 15c and come out of the $20 credit, but even they don't get used that often. Apart from the occasional YouTube downloading nothing much gets used … At present it is in credit of $80 plus … We shall probably use this to make some OS calls. Just saying; I see where you are coming from with your teens usage, but good on you for shopping around for the right plan. Too many people jump before they leap with phone plans.

  • On Telstra, on cheapest plan, iPhone 5 will cost you $1704 ($60 + $11 handset repayment).

If you go with Kogan (which is with telstra as well), I guess it is $29 a month which works out to be $696.

If we do some calculation here.

    Cheapest iPhone 5 - $650 (Kogan)

    Telstra Total repayment ~ $1700

    Telstra repayment (excluding handset) ~ $1700 - $650 = $1050

YOU ARE PAYING FOR CALLS AND DATA (24 Months)

    On telstra - $1050

    On Kogan ~ $700

I would say, buying phone outright and taking prepaid is best option. Although with telstra, your son will get 4G connectivity but you have to consider what is important at this time - savings or data speed. Difference will work out to be approx. $15 a month.

    Do check network coverage here

    http://www.kogan.com/au/mobile/

I recently ported my number from vodafone to optus (woolworth) and I am pretty happy paying $29 for 45 days and getting 5GB data and $250 calls. Data speed is good and network in my area is nice.

I bought a case off eBay to keep my phone safe and I figured it out that whenever I use to take that cover off my phone, I use to get better signals. Ask your son to try that, may be it is not optus but phone case.

    Hope it will help you

Knowing a Teenager he would text more than 60 times a day so he would likely get disconnected from Kogan. Read the disconnection stories on Whirlpool/SMH

I'd wait pending the outcome of the ACCC for jumping on the kogan ship. Aldi is looking good atm.

      • Have you got a link? I heard about Kogan but not 60 a day, that's tiny for unlimited.

        • I can't find a link I read, but I do know for a fact Boost is capped ~100, regarding their ToS.

          Boost
          Excessive use
9.11 Unless a FairPlay offer has been promoted as providing unlimited calls or usage, you must
not use any of our FairPlay offers in a way that is excessive.
9.12 We consider that using more than 2500 minutes each month on any mobile service is
excessive use of our FairPlay offers.
9.13 In the case of FairPlay offers about SMS text messages, we consider that excessive use is
more than 100 SMS text messages from a mobile phone each day
9.14 In the case of FairPlay offers about MMS, we consider that excessive use is MMS sent to
more than 50 people each day where each MMS is sent to a mobile phone or email address.

So seeing this I wouldn't be surprised. Also Kogan's ToS is absolutely ridiculous I hope the ACCC slaps them a huge ass fine:

          Kogan
 download or upload more than 400MB of data on a single
          day on three or more occasions in a 30 day period;
           download or upload more than 1GB of data on a single day;
 recharge your prepaid mobile Service Access plan more
than once per 30 day period; or
 use the Service in a manner where your volume of calls or
texts within a single 30 day period exceeds the volume of
calls or texts made by 99% of users of the same type of
Service within that same 30 day period, as reasonably
          determined by Kogan

  • A good used 4S would be my suggestion. A bit less fragile than the 5 with the steel surround (won't chip). Also compatibility with all the existing docks/cables hardware will be a positive.

Now with Apple's openly fulfiling statuatory warranty (2 years), iPhone 4S's are great value. That combined with an Amaysim or Kogan sim will get you the Telstra coverage you desire.

      Kogan —> Telstra

      Amaysim —> Optus

  • +1

If you want Tel$tra, you will have to pay more, especially if you want iPhone 5.

An alternative is gone with resellers using Telstra NextG network - Kogan or Aldi or Boost (Boost changed from Optus to Telstra). Since they use Telstra network, they cannot match resellers using Optus network in terms of value for money.

Teenagers pick up things very quickly so Android phones are definetely worth considering. However, get at least an Android phone with dual core (preferably quad core) CPU - Nexus 4 or Galaxy S3 or better. Get a phone that can really compete with iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S.

    • Telstra 3G Wholesale ⊊ Telstra NextG

If you are in an area that is solely covered by Telstra, you may not have reception; these areas are quite outback though.

  • Kogan + iPhone 4S outright perhaps, a few of my tradesman have iPhones.. if he's working in the roof make sure to get him one of those cases that cover the whole phone from dust

  • Take a look at Aldimobile. it looks more expensive than Kogan but it doesnt restrict you in the same way. with Kogan, unlimited ain't unlimited.

Remember if he has an iphone, and his mates have iphones, they will be doing iMessage, not SMS. its cheaper. There are other options too, with smartphones, like whatsapp and viber and these are cross-platform.

  • thanks, your information is so helpful,

  • I live regional vic morn peninsula and use prepaid telstra nextg and aldi kogan boost.. all coverage is similar so id go kogan $29 month unlimited calls text and 6gb internet. They take a while to send s card tho. Aldi faster and cost $6 more with less data but faster delivery and I think data unused carries iver on $35 month deal. Galaxy s3 is bargain at moment too $418 or so as mentioned from kogan where I bought my note 2. Sure he can find an iphone there too:) U can buy phone and $5 sim together then recharge $29month. No way get a contract as people here say ! As mentioned regional coverage I find
Kogan and aldi same as telstra nextg which I also use. Good luck :)
