  • Khan academy is great.

    • And… It's FREE to use!

      Kids like Mathletics (once costing ~ $100 each for a year;
      schools could pay ~ $50 / student, when enrolling -lots- of 'em),
      but they seem capable of wasting time, eg, changing avatar looks
      &/or when "competing" with others, around the world… then,
      the problems dropped down to 2-digit Arithmetic in "competitions."

      Does anyone know today's Mathletics' pricing (for families & for schools)?

      PS Why don't we see -any- prices (with deal -or- pre-deal) here?

      • Sorry, forgot the price. It depends on whether it is one or three students. Pre-deal pricing can be seen from the main mathsonline.com.au page.

  • It surely is, but as far as I can tell and I may be wrong, it doesn't include practice questions for each topic and isn't specifically tailored to Australian maths standards along year levels.

    I also think the instructional voice and nice layout of the numbers and graphics is better with mathsonline.com.au

    So yes, it is a choice of free v paid. Sometimes paid wins over free, depending on its features. I am not aligned with MO in any way, just a previous happy customer so to each their own.

  • These kind of programs help a select few students who know what they are doing and just need some extra practice with the concepts they have learned.

    Maths is all about learning the theory and understanding why its done in such a way (~20%) the remainder is all about doing practice, lots and lots of it to get good grades in primary or high school!

    You can teach a student all the concepts but if they don't go home and do question after question, checking their answers every now and than to make sure they are on the right track than no amount of help can make them succeed.

    I am a VCE maths tutor and current university student and that's what I have seen over and over.

    The text books the students have are equally as good. It's just a matter of them reading the examples and trying to follow
