I'd be very wary of believing that video, it just reeks of pro-Apple anti-clone propaganda to me…

        • +2

I have had a cheap eBay smart cover just fall apart first time I've tried to use it. They're useless.

        • I'm not doubting you, but have you watched that video…it's as biased as an ACA/TT story!

        • Nah looks pretty shoddy. Just saying, from what I've found, the cheap/fake smart covers aren't worth it.

        • +1

You can clearly see they are one sided with that video,

Pushing harder on the fake case, Spending more time 'testing' it.

I bet the apple one would do the same thing

    Listed Specs:

    Sequential Read < 80MB/s
    Sequential Write < 70MB/s

I do not like the use of a less than symbol.

But if they are within 10-20% of the figures quoted, it's good value.

    • I haven't done a speed test (have the 64GB one). But I'm pretty sure fokes around here did some before and they were pretty close? Regardless I've been happy with my 64GB model.

      • +1

Due to memory channels, the 32GB (and smaller) will likely be slower. But even if it's over 20-25MB/s write, it's still faster than top of the line usb2 drives, so I don't mind them marketing it as usb3 if so.

        • I've got/had (read below) one of these and they're proper quick. iirc i regularly got 60mb/s read/write using USB3.0 (on/off SDD in RAID0).

        • 60mb/s read AND write, not just read? Very good value if true.

    • lol yeah haha, they've really covered their butts on that one. Can't complain if you get one that's only 10MB/s write.

    • Actual specs:

      29.4GB usable.

      USB2 -

  • Perfect timing, thanks zhenwen! I just lost my mine yesterday and needed to replace it. It just had tv shows and movies on it for when I go to my gf's house, so luckily nothing important on it.

    • +4

:O TV shows and movies are important!

  • Very happy with my 32GB

  • +1

Anyone that owns this, would you say it performs similarly to the 32GB Lexar JumpDrive S73 USB 3.0 Flash Drive sold by Flingshot (http://flingshot.com.au/products/storage-usb-storage-32gb-le…)?
As I have the 16gb Lexar from Flingshot, and it mostly writes at around 20mb/s.

    • It should perform faster. but the 16GB Lexar does do 20MB/s in USB2 ports, which is always nice.

  • Bought one. Thanks OP.

  • Bought one as well, thanks for the link.

  • How fast would this be on a usb 2.0 port? I'd be happy with 10MB/s write

    • +1

A USB 3.0 device will do between 20 and 30MB/sec on a USB 2.0 port.

So, if this drive can do more than 30MB/sec or so, then that's what you'll get. What we don't know is what speed these sticks can do "flat out"

      • I see, thanks

    • -6

USB 2.0 port - rofl. What century are you living in?

      • -1

Time to cut back on the cough syrup, bro! ;)

      • Haha, 21st. I don't have a need to upgrade yet; 2.0 is fast enough for me, and I don't have any peripherals which take advantage of 3.0

        • -2

Doesn't matter if you need it or not - the hardware that goes along with USB 2.0 is outdated.

        • +1

Easy MrZ, not all of us can afford a Trinitron! ;)

        • -1

Uh-huh… my Trinitron was $5600 so I'm hoping that not everyone can afford it.

        • FWIW, I have at least half a dozen PCs in my house, but between them only 3x USB3.0 ports…2x of those courtesy an upgrade card! I also know quite a few poor plebs that don't have any, I'm fairly certain this dilemma qualifies as a first world problem! :)

  • Grabbed one - for $19 it's worth the risk that it's a bit slow.

  • So plugged into a USB 2.0 port this would still be a relatively fast drive? At least compared to other cheap USB 2.0 flash drives?

  • They are getting so cheap but no so sure about the quality of this one with no brand though.

    • And?

      • looks like the one advertised?

        • I got the same one, I think we got a USB 2 drive instead of USB 3, however the connectors are blue like most USB 3 drives.
          Weird.

    • edit: speeds top out around 45 MB/s, in comparison my Lexar triton does 150 MB/s easy

      • What about write speed? I'm using this to play video on my TV so read speed is irrelevant.

        • Don't you mean 'record' video? That would be where write speed becomes an issue.

For playback of media stored on the USB then only read speed would be relevant.

        • +1

No, write speed is relevant because I'm copying the files to the USB stick from my PC, and then playing them on the TV. The read speed is irrelevant because the bitrate of many files is only 500-700 KB/s.

        • Fair enough…it might be time to consider upgrade from sneakernet to a networked media player though! ;)

        • +2

45 MB/s should be the write speed for this. Read will be higher.

        • might be time to consider upgrade from sneakernet to a networked media player

Agreed. Copying files on a 'need to view' basis is painful in the extreme.

        • Deleted [duplicate post]

        • Yes, it's so painful walking a distance of about 2 metres from my PC to my TV and plugging in a USB stick. A lot cheaper than forking out on some wireless media player.

        • -1

You could use some of the money you saved by not upgrading your Trinitron to a post-war TV! ;)

        • +1

What are you on about? CRTs are post war TVs, post WWI. Did you know the car you drive is technology that dates back to the 1800s?

        • -1

Are we looking at a whoosh scenario here? :)

    • +1

annnnnd this is what I got http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2a6uyd4&s=6

ANNNNDDDD I got the same on Friday

H2testw test on a USB 2.0 laptop port… at least it really is 32GB

      Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
      Writing speed: 17.0 MByte/s
      Reading speed: 24.9 MByte/s
      H2testw v1.4

From those results, I'd say it's a generic USB 2.0 drive with a blue "usb 3.0" plug on it.

Read is about as much as can be expected via USB 2.0. Write is slow, well below maximum USB 2.0 speed. I may have to test on a USB 3.0 port at home later.

      • +1

You tested on a USB2 port and got standard USB2 results. So not sure why you're claiming "it's a generic USB 2.0 drive with a blue "usb 3.0" plug on it". If you get the same speeds on a USB3 port then you'd have the right to claim that.

  • Received the swivel model with blue connector. Sequential R/W 186 / 43 MBs on USB3

  • -3

I got the swivel one. On USB2 I am getting 25-28 MB/s. On USB3 I am getting 35-38 MB/s. I'll probably just use USB2 as I can't be bothered reaching around the back of the PC - my front ports are only USB2.

By the way, get this - if I plug it into USB2, Windows tells me "this device can perform faster if plugged into a super-speed USB 3.0 port". Hello Microsoft?! You don't even support USB 3.0 in my OS!! (Win7)

    • ??? Where is this rubbish coming from? Mac is the only operating system having trouble with USB 3.0, they keep trying to promote their firebolts and thundercables or what not.

      • -1

It's not rubbish. Windows 7 does not support USB 3.0. FYI:

USB 1.0 is supported by Windows 95 OSR2 (B) and above
USB 2.0 is supported by Windows XP SP2 and above
USB 3.0 is supported by Windows 8 and above

        • Your word for the day is 'drivers', MrZ!

They're free too, you won't even have to fork out anything to get USB3.0 support working under Win7…just as well, coz it seems that you've spent all of your hard-earned on that old steam-powered TV of yours! ;)
