Vaya 4G Plans - 20% Discount until 30 April

620

Vaya has just moved from their great value 3G plans to newer 4G plans which were more expensive for the same value. However, they currently have 20% off, which makes it just marginally worse value than their really good value 3G plans, and you get 4G speeds. eg their old $17 plan which would've been my preferred plan had $700 of talk/text, unlimited standard SMS and 2GB data. The new $22 plan is now $17.60, and offers $650 worth of talk/text, unlimited standard SMS and 1.5GB data.

It sounds like the 20% off is valid for the full 24 month contract, the way I read this footnote: "20% OFF
-** Valid for applications from new customers received from the 8th April 2013. Valid until the 30 April 2013. Not available to customers with a connected service as of the 8th April 2013. The life of a plan is 24 months. 20% off valid for your plan access fee only and discounted for a total of 24 months."

I think it means that if someone applied before the 8th, but was connected from the 8th, they are not eligible for the discount. Do you agree? Someone could check with Vaya, if they want more clarification.

Vaya currently have a better reputation than Amaysim, and provides 4G vs the Kogans and Aldis, and is much cheaper than Boost 4G.

edit: They changed the condition on the 9th of April. It now states: "20% OFF
** Valid only for applications from new customers received from the 8th April 2013 onwards. Not available to existing customers with a service already connected prior to the 8th April 2013. The 20% off is valid on your plan access fee only and it applied as a monthly discount off your plans access fee for a maximum of the next 24 monthly invoices, the promotional discount is valid for both month to month and 24 month contract options."
So, it seems they have taken off an expiry date, which might mean they could take it off anytime. Also, they have clarified that it is now available on month to month signups too (it wasn't clear before).

Would be very tempted if there wasn't a 24 month contract involved!
These guys haven't even been around that long!

There's no 24 months contract. The discount is valid for 24months.

  • I was looking at Vaya before their new pricing.
Is Live Connected pretty much the same quality as Vaya? Their $17 plan seems a little bit better if your not after 4g.

    • Pretty much - they're both on Optus network.

When you go overseas, LC act as an answering service, with a $100 bond (from memory)
Vaya will enable your global roaming for a $200 bond

I've had LOTS of trouble getting my bond back from vaya, but eventually did.

I switched to Vaya recently and it's been great.

im guessing it works for month to month as well

    • …or for just a month on month-to-month

  • What network are they reselling.. Optus or Telstra?

    • +3

      Optus

  • looks like the mms is not included of the unlimited plan and is charged 55c each on top, so send 100 mms / photos a month will cost $55! wth!

    • edit: cleared

      • For the 'Vaya' dollars, how much is included on the $45 plan then? As I too see MMS as on and above any base plan payment.

MMS additional costs is currently one of the reasons I'm hesitant to go with Vaya. Some phones automatically convert SMS's -> MMS.

    • +1

      Stop sexting.

      • Was your mouth!

        • +3

          Whose mouth is it now?

    • +1

I don't know why nzcoops was down voted? The MMS are included in the monthly credit. If you read the "critical information summary" it states:
      What's included in standard credit:
Standard credit includes calls and SMS to Australian mobile and fixed line numbers including 13, 1300 and 1800 numbers. It also includes MMS, Video Calling, Voicemail and SMS to International phones.

The wording is the same on all plans except the 'Power Plan 45', which doesn't mention MMS specifically but does refference an 'IFair use policy' which I haven't bothered looking into further.

edit: oh, you were talking specifically about the 'Power Plan 45'…. my bad.

      • Yeah, I ended up ringing them. They were a little lost, but the guy [based in the US] went away and came back to tell me MMS is included. I said the site and details do not make it clear and they should fix it.

  • +2

no cap value for unlimited plan, and mms cost 55c, vaya is a bit tricky this time.

    • +1

I asked this in the Whirlpool thread also, never got an official response. Also costs $1 to pay via bPay and even more via other methods.

      • Direct debit from credit card is free.

  • +1

    is international call include?

    • I'd like to know this as well. Their old plans included international calls, IIRC.

      • No it's not. If you read the critical information summary pdf it tells you what all is not included in the standard credit.

  • do they still have the $11 3G plan?

    • +1

I was looking for that as well. Couldn't find it anywhere on their website

    • +2

      Not for new customers!

Optus' 3G SIMs are now also 4G compatible and blows away resellers in value
    https://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/modemsandtablets/byo…

Source: Bought one today, was told it is 4G compatible and the welcome pack says it's a 3G/4G SIM.

    • +3

The SIM plans you've linked to are data only as far as I can tell. That's not the same as the product in this offer.

      • Ahh good pick up.

  • What Boost 4g?? I recently switched from Vaya to Boost and I am much happier with the reception (and service). Would Optus 4g solve the reception problem?

    • I think Boost is Telstra?

    • +2

Depends where you are I gather. I have access to an Optus 4G service and so far it has had signal whereas my Optus 3G has hardly any signal.

I wouldn't know if their cell capacity and backhaul is any good or not. Generally get congestion on my Optus service even with full signal which means the cell is congested or there isn't enough backhaul to satisfy the cell.

Buy a prepaid SIM to test it out.

      • True - it's cheap enough to buy and test. Interesting that Optus 4g works where 3g doesn't.

I don't think Boost has 4g yet.. not that I have a 4g phone anyway!

      • Yes, Optus 3G is horribly congested and pretty crap now.

  • I'm currently with virgin… I know they both use the Optus network, but do they really have the same network?
Have been eyeing Vaya for a LONG time!

    • I've found Virgin's call coverage to be the same as Optus, but the data network seems to be a lot worse (they use a different APN and it seems to be a lot slower at times). I switched from Virgin to TPG (an Optus reseller) and find that TPG's network seems the same as Optus in terms of coverage and download speeds.

      • +1

If you're on Virgin postpaid, you can simply change to the yesinternet (Optus) APN to avoid those problems.

        • how do you do that?

        • I was on prepaid so that wasn't an option for me.

    • Virgin and Vaya would use the same network as Optus 4G.

  • it says 20% is only if you sign 24 months. hmmm still good price tho

    • +1

Wrong mate. Read the t&c carefully

  • +21

Haha I commented on their facebook page that they increased the prices then had a 20% sale and they blocked me from commenting and deleted my comment.. FAIL

    • +1

      I hate these behaviours !

  • No optus 4g coverage where I am. Vaya is okay though, I'd stick with my woolworths plan for now. Hopefully this'll mean when there is finally 4g coverage, there will be plenty of affordable plans. :)

  • +1

great deal! Being on a Nexus 4 I'll be sticking with my current Vaya $11 3G plan, but hopefully this promotional pricing will become more frequent and I can make use of it with the next phone I buy.

I do feel sorry for the early adopters of Vaya 4G though. According to their Facebook page existing customers won't get the discount

    • It wouldn't be hard to port out and back in again, plenty of time to do it. The free first month credit either covers the SIM fee or comes close to it depending on the plan one chooses. Bit of an inconvenience though.

Lots of existing customers would rather pay full price than enter into a 24 month contract anyway, I know I would.

  • +2

Sneaky operator: paid for $200 deposit for auto roaming, asked for return of deposit well over a month on return, was told it will take up to 4 weeks, recent bill saw a credit of $200 in my monthly Vaya billing. Dodgy!

    • -5

How is that dodgy? You knew there would be a $200 deposit for Roaming, and they have to wait to get the data back from where ever you have travelled to see if you have used the deposit. You got your money back so I fail to see the dodgy part?

      • +5

Credit is hardly same thing. And a credit can easily be applied in hours. Returned means cash in ur bank.

        • Yikes I missed that. You are correct. It should of been credited/returned back to their Credit Card/Bank Account.

  • +1

$17.60 is unbelievably good value for a decent 4G plan with 1.5GB. For example, Exetel charges $40 for the same plan! This is by far the cheapest way to get onto a 4G network, backed up by the Optus 3G network.

Also the excess usage charges at Vaya are very low (4c/mb) and you can even buy 1GB data blocks for $7. But bear in mind that plan changes are quite limited and you CANNOT use these SIMs in a USB modem (but you CAN tether… clear as mud huh?). And you won't get any 4G reception in Canberra as Optus's network there is 2300 Mhz TDD.

  • Just read the Product Review link at the top, it seems a very hit and miss. With a lot of the 5 star reviews still complaining about their customer service …

It's a shame there is so limited services available for 4G.

    • +1

I wouldn't attach too much weight to those reviews judging from the first whinger (aka reviewer) on that page. The moron hasn't even read the Terms of his plan. Also american call centre??LOL. And lastly he's whinging because they cut him off after $4000!!!

  • -8

    Again!!! Bad service guys!! WARNING!!!

  • What's the go on activation? If I get a sim in the time specified would I need to activate it before the 30th? Can't seem to find an answer on the site.

  • +1

I'm not sure what people expect of 'cheap' providers. You'll never get great service and that's understandable. It's always about trade-offs.

These 'cheap' Optus resellers are GREAT when they work and 'hit and miss' when you need some service.

I've been with one for many years and NEVER had a problem. Also NEVER had to contact them for anything.

The way I look at it, ALL providers are hit and miss with service. Even the expensive ones (e.g no shortage of complaints about Telstra). So I'd rather get the best possible deal pricewise and leave the rest to the phone gods. At least I won't be jaded if I receive poor service.

  • As an existing customer trying to upgrade to 4G, they are making it expensive. It is a $33 upgrade fee, on top of the monthly plan increase. And you can't get the free first month, or lower monthly plan cost.

Any ideas how to port out and back in to take advantage of the new customer bonus?

    • Nickel and diming you.

  • Looks good value, but confused a bit, do I have to sign up to a contract or can disconnect when I want to?

  • +5

    There's NO contract.
The discount is VALID for 24mths

I think the info on the VAYA website is pretty clear.

    20% OFF
** Valid only for applications from new customers received from the 8th April 2013 onwards. Not available to existing customers with a service already connected prior to the 8th April 2013. The 20% off is valid on your plan access fee only and it applied as a monthly discount off your plans access fee for a maximum of the next 24 monthly invoices, the promotional discount is valid for both month to month and 24 month contract options.

    • Thanks :)

      • +1

Thanks… they added the last line, probably to avoid the confusion. It wasn't there before.

  • where does it say promotion finishes at 30th Apr? I can only see that deadline is for "first month free access"

  • Do i get billed from the time i activate the sim or from the time i put through the order? Also when i go to sign up it asks if you want to keep my numnber.. does it port straight away or after activation when i get the simpack?

    • Billing doesn't start from time of order. From memory it's from when they send the SIM (can't remember exactly - could be from activation.)
You call them up for activation after you receive the SIM (I think you have a week to do that - that memory again!)

  • Does anyone know if you can add the $7 gigabyte "Bolt On" at any stage, or just when you initially sign up?

I'm currently on the TPG plan for $15, don't have a 4G phone yet but will be upgrading shortly. Considering switching now, but I'll want to upgrade to 2.5gb when I have 4g and wondering if I should bite the bullet and get the plan ($17.60) + bolt on ($7) now for $24.60, or if I can just switch plans now and get the bolt on when I get my new phone?

    • +2

Pretty sure anytime.. online. But it expires at the end of the month

      • Awesome - thanks!

  • Hmmm, very tempting…. But not sure if should go with LC instead as they are almost equally as cheap from here http://www.liveconnected.com.au/mobile-plans-3g. But not as popular as this because no free 1st month.

I am using juicedefender so my data connect and disconnect very often, just wondering for anyone, do you all feel that the data usage is alot and might exceed due to juicedefender since its charged per mb instead of kb unlike LC. Because juicedefender can easily have many session per hour.

    • Don't want any bill shock from data.

      • Hmmm…. Is LC a 4G plan? This one is 4G.

        • Hmmm, my phone is not LTE and I don't plan to change my phone anytime…. LC is not 4g.

  • +1

    FYI, old plans: http://web.archive.org/web/20130120033601/http://www.vaya.ne…

Calls were 30s increments, now 60s (same total cost.)
Data was charged per KB, now per MB - big backwards step AFAIC.

I'll stick with my $7 plan (no contract) - as long as they let me that is!

  • Hey guys, have some questions. I have a 3G phone but planning on getting a 4G phone in a few months…. Also My optus contract runs out in one month (late may). I was told by Vaya that i have to apply for the plan and activate before 30th april to get the specials. Now I need to apparently port the no. straight away as well as i cant ask for a new no. and then transfer my old no. across once the optus contract is over. If i port the no. now then i presume my optus contract gets broken? which means i probably have to pay some excess amount of fees… Also If I want a micro sim later on (my phone uses a normal sim at the moment but the 4G phone will use a micro sim) then i need to pay ANOTHER 20$ for the new sim despite having paid 20$ for the standard sim initialy??? How is that right?

Is this all right? Or do i have alternatives i can take to get around some of this?

    • Hey bud, I had some similiar question to you. Hopefully I'll answer them correctly.

The 20% discount offer and free one month access expires on 30/4. They are not willing/cant extend it past that date. You will be up for termination fee (you should be able to negotiate with Optus to waive it, I did it with 4 months remaining on my Telstra contract) but make sure you do that before porting to Vaya. My Vaya port took approximately an hour to transfer across.

The sim is the normal sized sim, but my fiance' phone is the micro sim, I just found the template online and cut it with scissors (its pretty easy if you take care). I assumed (not confirmed) they would charge you for a new sim, so cutting the sim was a chance I was willing to take. You can always get a adapter to go from micro to normal sim if you do go back in the future.

    • they just extended the deal.

@andyman1908 how did you get them to waive the termination fees early?

      • Yeah I saw that (here on ozb). I didn't see any mention of one free months access so I'm happy I rushed it through.

  • I tried to ask optus to let me go, i mean i have paid up till the end anyway as its the end of the month. But they still wanted me to pay 170$ cancellation, which was ridiculous.

Now i my contract finishes in late may, but i am overseas till 1st of june, so i want to apply for the Sim and then activate it while i am overseas but i probably wont have the sim with me as i can only order the sim after i go overseas. So How do i activate before 31st of May to get the free month etc? Do I need the sim to activate or is it just that i tell them to activate?

    • IIRC you need the sim number and your phone number thats it. So u may be able to explain to them to ask for that sim number over the phone.
Dont stress too much, from what ive heard, vaya have extended the 20% off deal each month from start of the year, so chances are it'll happen again :)

  • Anyone know when my contract with optus actually gets cancelled? As in is it when i first order the sim through Vaya and specify the no. to port, or is it only when i actually activate the sim after receiving the sim etc?

  • Only is effective once u activate the sim, so your safe to just order the sim anytime u like

  • Only is effective once u activate the sim, so your safe to just order the sim anytime u like

  • This deal is still available…
