    • I am with 8a as well. Wondering should I get a 10 when release lol.

  • +1

good deal (by another mysterious new account lol haiyaaa)!

    • Maybe 'wolves in sheep clothing' lives-here?

  • -1

This is wild. Pixels really don't hold their value.

    • +2

But I'm already deep into the pixel ecosystem with the watch and buds probably should have chosen Samsung.

    • +1

Yep, they update every year and sell old stock cheap - Apple have a better grip on discounting to keep the prices up.

      • If enough people believe in value-proposition, their demand drive-up prices.

What do YOU believe is the value-proposition of iPhones?

        • Pixel and Samsung both have similar high pricing for their new releases but discount old stock - Apple don't.

Android is more popular than iOS but Apple control the latter and the sales via subsidy and retailers; they still sell older models for years because there's demand.

Security, ease-of-use and apple ecosystem is the value prop, but it's the brand perception that keeps prices high.

The ecosystem is why I buy Android. I'm not buying a mac, ipad, iwatch at inflated prices just to keep it simple. It's often a better product but not as great as the pricing suggests.

    • +2

How is this a bad thing for Ozbargainers? We wait for sales exactly like this one.

You need to hand in your Ozbargain licence if you buy anything at full value.

    • +4

Pixels really don't hold their value.

Which is great news for all of us that don't need the very latest model. I'd argue there is no better phone for $399 so it's a fantastic bargain.

  • Is it worth upgrading from the pixel 7 to the 8 pro? Ideally I’d like the 9 pro but this looks like a good deal

    • +4

No. Reminder 8 pro is also a larger phone. 9 pro is the same size as standard 9, similar to your 7.

      • +1

Awesome, thank you for the feedback. I'll hold off till the 9 pro

    • +2

Cameras. the P8 Pro camera, especially the 5x optical zoom with OIS, is the real deal.

    • I've upgraded from Pixel 7 Pro to 9 Pro XL. It was a massive upgrade. Used 7 Pro to trade it in on Google store. Got nearly $1000 for it with additional bonuses.

I reckon if you trade P7P in for P10P you'd get a huge discount.

  • I got the S23 for $399 on the deal the other day. Which one is better?

    • +2

If you like oneUI and the Samsung Camera the s23. If you like stock Android without Bloatware then Pixel. IMHO pixel take better quality photos at night time.

      • Thanks!

    • Samsung is better built and has been since the Galaxy S2. If you are happy with OneUI or HarmonyOS (Chyna Boo Hiss!) you can get better build quality for cheaper elsewhere.

If you want GrapheneOS or another open source Android with a decent SOC you need a Google phone. There's a few Motorolas that still support custom roms, and the Nothing phones, but the pickings otherwise are pretty slim if you don't want a decade old quad core A53 salvaged from landfill.

Is anyone able to purchase without having an active plan? I keep getting knocked back to registering a Telstra number

    • -1

Yes just did. No current active service

      • +7

I selected the phone, then selected "Outright", then "Add Phone"
I went to Cart and "Secure Checkout".
I select "Personal" and it says "Unable to process the order"

        • Telstra is making it hard for me to give them money

        • +1

I had no problem using my wife’s account, even without an active service. But when I used my own account, I got the same "We're unable to process the order at this time." I’m thinking it might be because I’ve cancelled the JB Telstra plan twice this year.

    • +1

same problem here, ive been looking for a solution since 6 am

    • I just did, created telstra ID with Boost awile ago, been with catch connect almost a year but it still worked with no active plan

  • 128 or 256gb? Which one is better value for the 8 pro?

    • Don't know much about value or how much Android bloat (I'm an Apple user), but got a 256gb model for dad since he tends to use his stuff for 5+ years. All I know is that 128gb wouldn't go far on iOS.

    • light use - 128gb
anything above - at least 256 - you can't put an SD card in this phone to offset unlike many others

  • +1

Thanks, got one on "Buy Now, Think Later!"

  • -1

Do OW PB Telstra? Might be a good opportunity to try get it for $474.05

    • +1

Maybe but some store don’t price match clearance item

    • +1

Just called and tried, the operator I got said they don't match Telcos.. but I don't know if different person would say something else as it doesn't sound right

  • +1

How can I buy without a Telstra service, tried to sign up but require Telstra phone number.

    • +1

I have Boost and can login and order.

  • This makes the p9a deal from GG over the weekend expensive

    • +3

Yeh that’s my take on. Always better to get the previous year flagship phone over a mid range current phone.

  • +6

I have this phone since it's launch and I can't wait to move away from pixel. It's been the worst phone I have had since probably the Samsung omnia.
The only redeeming factor is the camera..
Battery sucks, it's sluggish, probably because I have to use nova launcher as pixel software is just crap. There is no folder management, the search bar is forced on your widget screen. The phone freezes forcing a reset… Can't stand it.
I'm waiting to go back to Samsung and hoping the flip/fold 7 are as good as predictions say they are..
Yes it's cheap but I would say that is how much it should cost at most.
Would not recommend anyone spend full rrp on a pixel…ever.
Still at this price it's ok so upvoted

    • I agree, this isn't a great phone and for $500.

      • So why did you +?

        • Purchased one for my daughter. Didn't realise it was the Pro version. Not a bad price for a flagship with a great camera.

    • -5

The only redeeming factor is the camera..

      So good camera

      Battery sucks

It lasts a day which is all anyone needs. Another tick.

it's sluggish, probably because I have to use nova launcher

So you loaded a custom ROM then blame the phone?

      pixel software is just crap

Pixel UI beats Apple or Samsung, and it clearly works better than nova based your own comment above

      There is no folder management

      Don't need it

the search bar is forced on your widget screen.

I use it every day so not a problem

The phone freezes forcing a reset

Never experienced this, have you thought that your custom ROM might be contribution to your poor experience?.

My experience it's that this is an upper mid-range phone with one of the best cameras you can get for the price of a low end phone. For anyone other than upper end of power users it's a bargain at $399.

      .

      • Not a custom ROM buddy, nova launcher is a free launcher overlay.
I had used nova launcher for quite some time on many devices and bought the premium version over 10 years ago, and never had the issues like I have on this phone. I never used nova on iPhones (not available but also not needed) or Samsung phones as those interfaces are far superior to the pixel. But by all means you can like pixel UI.. it's crap imo but you do you.
And your opinions are your own you don't need to disprove mine to make it look like you are correct.
As you would have predicted I completely disagree with your opinions.

        • +3

i'd wager nova launcher is probably contributing to a few of your qualms, honestly this is weird but try microsoft launcher, i found it very good until i broke it with work (i implemented a MAM policy which basically prevented me from using it without being constantly pestered with sign ins, the one bad thing about being security admin when you don't exclude yourself from policies)

          • @kekoloco: Does the Microsoft launcher have folder management. That's really important of a feature.
That's why I really enjoy Samsung's UI.. comes straight out of the box.

            • +1

@maverickjohn: I had a couple of seconds to search, so here you are:

              AI Overview
For a free Android launcher with folders, Nova Launcher is a top choice, offering extensive customization and a user-friendly experience. Nova Launcher Prime unlocks additional features, while the free version provides a solid foundation. Other popular options include Smart Launcher, known for its automatic app sorting and folder creation, and Microsoft Launcher, which offers a more streamlined and secure experience.
              Elaboration:
              Nova Launcher:
This launcher has been a favorite for many, offering a blend of customization and ease of use. While the free version is great, the paid version (Nova Launcher Prime) provides additional features like gestures, notification badges, and drawer folders.
              Smart Launcher:
This launcher automatically sorts your apps into categories, making organization a breeze. You can also create additional categories and folders for personalized app management.
              Microsoft Launcher:
If you're looking for a more secure and streamlined experience, the Microsoft Launcher is a good option. It offers privacy features and seamless integration with your Microsoft account.
              Other options:
Other launchers worth considering include Niagara Launcher, Lawnchair, and Hyperion Launcher, each offering unique features and customization options.

              • @Big L: That's actually really kind of you. Thank you.. I could have done the search, for whatever reason my instant thought was to ask based on recommendation.
                But your kindness is appreciated.

        • -1

Not a custom ROM buddy, nova launcher is a free launcher overlay.

Ok so you are having UI issues after installing your own UI, but are blaming the device and not the possibility that your add-on is the affecting your experience?

And your opinions are your own you don't need to disprove mine to make it look like you are correct.

Well you are the one blaming the device for something you have customised. Pot meet kettle…

As you would have predicted I completely disagree with your opinions.

But can you name a better option for the prospective buyer for $399?

          • @1st-Amendment: I think you need to reread all my comments.
Firstly I have used nova launcher over various devices in the last 10 years (or more) and only this phone has had problems.. either this phone can't handle it which would be weird as older chips did fine or nova has become worse over the years.
The UI of nova is superior, and I have problems with pixel UI has its subpar.
My blame for the device comes from the device itself not the UI.. since I had this phone all the points have been present. Also I'm not the only one experiencing this.. if you also read the other comments (who have not mentioned a UI overlay) they also have bad battery, sluggish performance etc.
I think you are nitpicking but not looking at the wide array of comments stating similar problems.
Also if you saw my original comment I also mentioned at this price it's decent but no one should ever pay full price… And hence why I upvoted it. It's good for a $500 phone it's shit for a $1600 dollar phone.

            • -1

@maverickjohn: How do you feel your phone is now worth so much less instead of getting an equiv apple or samsung

              • @wisb0: Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understand your question.
As in regards to how much it has depreciated over the 2 year period in comparison to Samsung or Apple?

                • -1

@maverickjohn: I mean how do feel about your phone's resale value tanking when you could have gotten an apple.

I hate pixels not because they are bad phones. But because they cost more if you change phones every few years

                  • @wisb0: Gotcha..
When I buy a device I never consider what the value will be in a couple of years.. I got this phone based on a. Recommendation from a friend.. but obviously I didn't have a good experience.
In the end I'm always open to trying new devices and I feel like I've had my fair share of exposure to different brands.. I'm seriously tempted to go razr 60 ultra when it launches.. just to try another brand.

            • +1

@maverickjohn: He'd argue with a stop sign, you're wasting your time. Although he's enlightened me to the fact that there are Pixel fanbois in the world, and now I want to see a fight between them and the iPhone fanbois.

  • +2

got family who are on the pixel 4a 5g, i think the 8 should be a upgrade

  • +1

Finally got the 256gb 8 pro, hopefully the $100 extra is worth over the 128gb

    • I can't find the 8 Pro 256 GB
Care to share the link, please

      • +5

The 256gb Pixel 8 Pro is only available in Obsidian. I just ordered one.

    • +1

You'll be glad you did down the line. 128gb will be filled up in no time.

      • +1

        I've only used 70GB on my S23+.

Really depends on your use case.

    • you can't place an SD card in pixels.

so, yes, you have no flexibility to upgrade - wise to get above what you need to avoid stress, even for 100 extra

  • +2

I saw this deal 40 mins ago, and keep telling myself I don't need this one. Finally, I got a 8 pro

    • was literally doing the same but $600 for 8 pro 256 is just irresistable. its actually $200-300~ cheaper than most excellent quality refurbs too

  • +7

mobilemonster is buying pixel 8 for $480 and pixel 8 pro for $580

    • Can't get wrong with them

  • Does buying a $2 prepaid sim kit online give you a Telstra ID? Tia

    • +1

did you ever get a boost sim? it give you a Telstra id as well.

      • I had Boost a few years ago and used the same number I've always had,but dont have any records of it, is there a way to find the Telstra ID?

        • should be the same email, try forgot username feature, use the email you used to setup boost

    • I don't know about the online one. I use physical $2 sim and work.

    • it gives you an active account so you can then set up an id and purchase the phone. just skip the part where telstra want you to choose an upgrade plan. I just tried it and the slowest part was waiting for the sim to get activated (~2hrs)

  • Thinking of changing from 7 to 8 now coz of this deal, can't seem to create a random Telstra ID, any hacks anyone? Cheers

  • +1

How do you get Telstra ID if you're not a Telstra customer? Is this phone locked to Telstra network?

    • You can get one with a Boost SIM, should be unlocked.

  • bought pixel 9 pro weeks ago, little regret and feel this is a better deal

    • +1

If you paid $699 from the Telstra deal, then you are on par. Wouldn’t stress.

    • Depends if you prefer a better processor or a bigger display

  • A no brainer at these prices.

  • +4

8 pro is a great phone. Awesome cameras

  • Can you root these phones

  • can these be purchased instore?

  • Hopefully someone price matches

  • Can JB do price match?

    • +4

tried that. was told no chance :)

  • You can order two of them with the same Telstra ID if you place two orders. I ordered the 128gb model then decided I want 256gb.

  • +1

Great price, thanks OP. Makes up for missing the $699 Pixel 9 pros the other week. Would probably still prefer that but 256gb version for only $599 is still pretty sweet.

  • +1

Just bought a 128GB Pro for my wife and a 256GB for me. Used the same Telstra account for two seperate orders.

  • Just sold my p8 pro 256gb to cex last week for $460 cash. This is insane!

  • +2

    Solid phone

  • +2

Using a P8P now and the battery life is garbage. Nothing will beat an iPhone.
