Cube U9GT5 (U9GTV) Retina, 2GB Ram, RK3188, 16GB for US $226.99 Delivered at Chinagrabber.com

30

So upon hours of searching on the net, I believe I have found the best price for a Retina + RK3188 combo chinese tablet. Most other websites range from $250 to $300 and this particular website has the U9GT5 for the price of a Retina + A31 chip which is vastly inferior (slower) than the new RK3188.

As always the after-service from a relatively unknown website has to be dubious at best but if you are willing to take a risk (since they do accept Paypal, which is a big plus for me and the reason why I bought it), then I'm pretty sure you won't find a better price.

You might get a price saying AU$216.68 but at the checkout, it will revert to $226.99 and you can't change it which is unfortunate.

This is the best chinese tablet combination out at the moment, so if you pick one up…enjoy!

  • So, it has started. Rockchip RK3188 (quad core CPU) with "retina" display. Unlike previous gen Rockchip, this one has embedded GPS (though most likely baseband support only).

    Questions are:

    • Will the build quality get better?
    • Quality of IPS screen (hopefully, not the second grade LG ones).
    • Will the entire 16GB be available for app install (not the useless 1GB memory + 15GB internal SD combination).
    • Is the "wireless N" one of those cheapy wireless N 150 chipset (which got included because no one makes wireless G only chipset anymore)? Those cheapy chipsets often have issue when you put it in standby mode and then try to wake them up laer. The infamous losing wifi connection issue common to cheap no name brand tablets.
    • What does baseband support mean? It allows for manufacturers to add GPS modules?

      • -1

It basically means: very standard GPS support (bare minimum). Most common/branded 2012 tablets/phones (Nexus 4, 7, 10, Samsung Galaxy S3, Note II, HTC One and iPhone 4S, 5 etc…) have GLONASS support as well. Galaxy S2 probably have it too (cannot remember now).

The embedded GPS is probably okay, just won't be very usable indoor and may take longer to get a lock. So, it is there to get a tick (i.e. GPS is there) and with Jellybean, you kinda need GPS to use Google Now properly.

      • I see. That means offline GPS support without the need to the "wifi location" feature?

        • Yes, it can do offline GPS without wifi. While it won't get a lock as fast as the current gen branded devices, at least it is available. If you think about the fact that Apple won't throw in GPS for wifi only iPads, it is good Rockchip includes it (though I suspect it is probably part of the A9 CPU reference design).

        • according to merimobiles it has no gps at all

hopefully you dont experience any problems because the only benefit of using paypal outside of ebay is the seller doesnt get your cc details. Any problems will be between you and seller alone. same with cc, they wont get involved if you have already accepted the sellers t & c. if the seller isnt australian based then you're out of luck. i found out the hard way

    • I was under the impression that paypal offers buyer protection to all transactions.

      • +4

Paypal buyer protection is a joke.

You'd have better luck going through a dispute case with your credit card company than the "BS" you will go through with paypal buyer protection.

        • Yeah I had to raise a dispute with them a few years back, it was an absolute nightmare. In the end I would have rather just lost the money and saved the hassle.

        • Not true. I've had a few disputes on ebay as well as some retail sites where the goods didn't get delivered. I raised a dispute on more than 3 occasions and got the refunds back. We need to ensure we follow the right process when raising disputes and collecting all evidence one and collect to use it to support the dispute.

          cheers,
rusty "not affiliated with Paypal but have been a satisfied user so far" nail

    • Agree with qtvinsta. Had issue with my dual core Rockchip based tablet. While the seller agreed to a full refund or a replacement, the item had to be sent back first. Added to the fact that if you really want Paypal to cover you, you must send back via registered post or courier (need proof + tracking). All that has to be completed within the paypal timeframe (the time starts ticking when you purchased the item, NOT when you received your item).

Bear in mind that these overseas sellers take their time to post it to you (which means it might be 4 weeks before you see the tablet), you really don't have much time left to sort out the mess (when there is one). Not to mention the international postage here costs a lot.

      • +2

Paypal's timeframe is 45 days from purchase to open a dispute. If you get to an agreement for return and refund then you have to provide tracking code of the shipping+ signature on delivery and when Paypal verifies the item has been delivered to the seller they will issue the refund. Paypal is going to give you a timeframe for sending the item back and providing the tracking info to them, this can be after the initial 45 days from purchase

Still does not change the fact that you will not be compensated for the international postage, which is not cheap. When you have to return an item you purchased online, unless the seller sent a courier to pick it up (or provide some form of return postage label), it will be costly and unpleasant.

Paypal's refund is also quite slow, especially if your transaction is credit card via Paypal (which will most likely be the case here - I doubt most people have $227 Paypal credit in their accounts).

That's if the seller hasn't done a runner or unreachable (refuse to talk with buyer and/or paypal.

After Paypal has tried to do what they can, they'll just close the case.

Let's just hope you don't get to experience the so called Paypal buyer protection.

        • i agree, but that has nothing to do with Paypal's timeframes

        • +3

@ops2000, if you are talking to me, i have experienced the Paypal buyer protection at least 20 times with 100% success so far. Sh$t can go wrong anytime, anyday, especially if you buy goods online and overseas. Unfortunately if you are after a 100% buyer protection i don't think you will find any company that can offer that.
If the seller is a scammer they can send you a brick instead of the goods and as long as they provide a tracking code that's enough for Paypal to close a case for a non received item. Also even if you return the item, they can refuse to sign for it and the item will come back to you and create further delays and extra costs for you.
if the seller still has an account with Paypal and refuses to talk with buyer/Paypal through the dispute/claim proccess within the timeframe then usually you get a refund and Paypal charges the seller's account

    • Go straight to your credit card provider and invoke your rights under s54 ('guarantee as to acceptable quality') or s55 ('fitness for purpose') of the Australian Consumer Law which came into effect in 2011. Works irrespective of whether the supplier is domestic or foreign: financial institutions have much better luck reversing transactions between themselves, than we peons do getting refunds.

Of specific interest should be s54(2)(e): DURABILITY.

IANAL, but The Lovely most certainly is. Even more better: after 15 years as a corporate-law type, The Lovely's now one of the 'wig and gown' crowd. Free lawsuits!

yeah, my paypal is now linked to my CC ONLY, as i had an issue a few years back with some bike fairings…

cost 500 bux, 250 was in shipping, 250 for the item…
contacted paypal due to issues, said no problem pay for return shipping (another $250 bux) and we'll refund you the origional item cost of 250 bux …

hmm lets see, send them back for another $250 bux - loose 250 bux origional shipping and get 250 of the item back, and be out of pocket 500 bux - they get there fairnings back at no loss and are free to sell them again… yeah, cause thats fair! seller did the wrong thing yet i still loose?

even though i won with paypal i still lost… big time!

  • A31 chip which is vastly inferior (slower) than the new RK3188.
    did you check benchmarks?
    http://i42.tinypic.com/2dsyyx.jpg

For raw cpu speed the RK3188 is faster, 18k Antutu vs 12k, but the A31 has better graphics due to PowerVR gpu, polygon fill rate 110m/s vs 58m/s and pixel fill rate 3000m/s vs 2133m/s, for graphics heavy games i know which one i'd rather have!
