just have to say no to atom~

    • +3

      up and atom!

      • +12

        Up and at them!

        • +8

My eyes! The goggles do nothing!

    • just the name gives me the shudders. Bloody hell, those terrible little netbooks made out of lego plastic…

      • You'll be pleased to know the build quality of this tablet is significantly better.

      • +12

Since Lego can withstand the torture of kids from 5+ for years and years .. i wish everything i had was made from that stuff!

      • I still have and use my Asus N10j.
It was great and can still do everything I need out of it.

    • +2

Atoms are a lot better than they used to be… Got to give them some credit you know,

  • Wow, epic deal. I got the ASUS VivoTab for $500 and even that was a good price. This includes a few extra accessories and has the same specs.

  • -8

Yeah, not too sure what a full blown Windows is doing on an Atom processor.
As Windows8 is not too optimized for small computing devices (unlike Android or iOS) it's just a really slow netbook without a decent keyboard :(

    • +9

Windows 8 is fully optimised for tablets.. have you never used it? Connected Standby gives you excellent battery life and instant-on. 1080p playback is hardware accelerated and smooth as anything. I'm running the same Firefox profile I have on my desktop with minimal fuss.

      • +1

        I'm saying because I've used it :)
The Atom is simply not enough for Windows.

        Don't believe me? :)

"Loading programs seemed to take forever, even browsing was an unattractively sedate experience."
        http://www.wired.co.uk/reviews/tablets/2013-03/acer-iconia-w…

        For this price, I'd rather
        - Buy an iPad / iPad mini
        - Buy an i3 notebook

For half the price, I'd rather
        - Buy a cheap Chinese Android tablet

        • +1

Well my N10j netbook runs Windows 8 fine. And this is about five years old and I highly doubt the processors would have gotten worse…

        • +4

          These reviews suck.

          "For this price, I'd rather
          - Buy an iPad / iPad mini
          - Buy an i3 notebook"

I'd rather buy anything android than something Apple, but a lot of these reviewers seem to be biased towards Apple products, perhaps they enjoy paying over inflated prices for featureless products. Then we have the i3 notebook, that's just stupid like a notebook can be used the same as a tablet.

        • +4

That's a pretty dumb review. I have an atom tablet and it works very well for what it's designed to do - tablet activities and lighter programs like MS Office. It's fast and responsive - go try one yourself at a store.

Encoding videos and playing games? That's not what Atom tablets are designed to do!

        • +6

I got the ThinkPad Tablet 2, which is pretty much the same specification as this one. So from my experience with the TPT2, i can say that the Atom is fairly capable processor when running the Windows 8 and 8 Pro, provided that:

-Don't load a very CPU and GPU intensive program, like AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, etc, then the Tablet will perform admirably.

-For MS Office, i can load a 50 page Office word file whilst surfing the internet with 10 tabs open. The word file will open up in the same time as my ThinkPad X200 with a 250 gigs platter hdd. There is also very little lag when i edit the word document.

-I can have 20 tabs open in Chrome, Mozilla or IE, it will still play a HD video in YouTube just fine without noticeable lag.

However, people may find it limiting if they have heaps of programs open like on the regular laptop/desktop, and requires extremely fast access to their SSD storage. The SSD in these machines are about the same speed as those 120 gigs platter hdd from 4 to 5 years ago, so they are fairly slow. The SSD in these tablets are actually eMMC, not the MLC and SLC type of SSD we normally use in laptops.

The only thing that i think is limiting these devices to mass uptake were the high prices. But at $380, i am not sure you can argue that it is NOT a good purchase (my TPT2 costs around 700 dollars about 2 months ago, which is same as my ThinkPad T430u with Nvidia optimus and i5 CPU). Also, with the these reviews about devices you have to take it with a grain of salt, some journalists base their opinions based on:

-Previous interactions with a certain brand (and own bias), i.e. some Apple users are die hard Apple users, they would say every other products from different brand as bad, regardless whether it is actually true or not.

-Some tech journo never even test their review products, they just guess or write their review based on what other people on the web says. I actually know a couple of tech journos whom do that, and make many errors in their articles. You ask them about the specifics or you want them to elaborate, they couldn't tell you anything.

Also, with the Iconia w510, you can use the keyboard folio which has a second battery in it. I think it is a better device than iPad and Android tablet at this price. Also an equivalent iPad 4 with 64 gigs of storage would cost around 600 dollars, and it would have less capabilities.

Most of my friends whom got an ASUS Transformer loved the device, but they lamented at the fact that they can't run regular windows and their programs on it. Couple of my mates already got this device to replace their aging Transformer tablet.

        • Thx 4 the info

  • +1

    Great Price theearth cheers +1

  • dont think can price match at OW.

tried it before in a few OW shops but got rejected as the spec in JB website says Intel Atom Processor 2760 Dual 1.5GHz. while the OW is correctly listed as 1.8GHz

    • i was about to comment that this is the 1.5ghz version (if there is such as thing)
i have the lenovo tpt2 and it is great for battery life, love the stylus which is a must for me.
but for this…hands down worth the price for win8
funny i only use the desktop section 9 out of 10 times

      • not very sure, but the earlier batch might be clocked at 1.5Ghz. anyone can confirm?

however the demo unit in store at JB hifi Chermside is actually clocked at 1.8Ghz.

        • I believe they are the same model with the same CPU but advertised differently between OW and JB.

          According to Acer Website: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model-datasheet/NT.L0KAA…

          "Intel® Atom™ Z2760 processor (1.5GHz/1.8GHz w/ Intel® Burst)"

I think JB is advertising its normal speed and OW is advertising its "Burst" Speed.

        • Yep that appears to be the case. So officeworks are rejecting pricematch because their advertisement is listed slightly differently… what a joke.

        • I just checked mine that I purchased in store for $384.80 and it's 1.8GHz.

I'll post screenshot once I learn how to use this thing properly.

Not sure if the guy gave me the wrong model or something but oh well :D

          http://i.imgur.com/5JMp1cl.png

Here's one with the receipt (if it helps): http://i.imgur.com/zcPL9kl.jpg (2.3mb for those on mobile data)

        • Wait, they didn't give you 5 % off?
I was luckily enough to get $19.24 or something extra off mine.

    • I just got one from OW for $360something. On the box of the Iconia, the code is exactly the same as the code used on JB site.
The old man who served me first didn't want to sell it to me as he didn't bother checking anything other than glancing at the site for a second, so I waited for him to go and asked another person in there and they checked it and the stock at JB and sold it to me. Hopefully I don't regret getting this, since apparently there may be better tablets out soon.

  • +2

Good price but the Atom CPU would probably struggle to decode high profile 1080p videos. I guess Celeron is the minimum to power Win 8

    • +1

Are there any windows tablets that aren't using the Atom processor?

      • +1

Iconia P3. They call it an ultrabook, but really it's just a tablet with a keyboard dock.

      • +1

Lots, but at two or three times the price (Surface, W700, Ativ)

I think the main drawback of these Atom tabs is the 2Gb of non upgradeable RAM.

      • You could get the Acer iconia w700, the samsung ativ smart pro (or slate pc) Microsoft Surface Pro (available in Australia sometime this month). They run on Intel i5. it seems that the battery doesnt last very long on these tablets.

      • +1

Generally look for Tablets that have "Pro" in the title.

As people mention the "Pro" ones are about twice the price and the battery lasts half as long, but you usually get a "full HD" screen and usually a 64bit Windows OS (Atom can't handle a 64 bit OS well).
Toshiba has a Helix model which has the detachable keyboard (with battery) that is fully customisable (i3 to i7, 32Gb to 256Gb SSD etc.) that includes a stylus (handy) but expect to pay $$$.

Oh and Microsoft is updating their Surface Pro tablets with the new Intel Haswell CPU, so expect Haswell versions of some of these other models to start appearing in the coming months.

        • Lenovo has the Helix model, not Toshiba.

      • Samsung Slate! However its quite pricey.. running an Core i5

    • I have the Asus VivoTab and it plays most 1080p videos fine, but resolution doesn't mean squat. The bit rate is much more important to the quality of a movie. it can decode h264 @ 7mbit/s no worries. the only video I tried more than that was 20ishmibt/s which, well didn't work so well

  • So tempted! I would really like to be able to play 1080p videos though through HDMI>TV so not sure how the CPU would do.

    • its fine for 1080p video

      • Just purchased :D

Played around with it in the shop 1.8GHz model (checked in the Control Panel) but the one I purchased is 1.5GHz

        • Does it change depending on your power saving mode?

        • Don't think so, there's only one power plan that I can see (Balanced).

        • the clock speed will vary depending on a lot of factors, to name a few.
          having mains power
          the temperature of the cpu
          the load on the cpu

  • has it got the dock?

    • of course not. the only option to buy dock is to buy online from acer $169 plus $20 delivery, or from OW $169 with free delivery

      • OW website has the dock listed as Out of stock, not available for re-order.

  • +1 for a windows tablet. I had a nexus, and I just found it annoying changing between different OS's. But the Atom is a bit of a worry, I might wait for the next…

    • +3

The atom is absolutely fine. I do all my basic office, movies and downloading on it and have never had a lag. I bought office 2013 when they had it for $15. Works so smooth.
they are bringing out a new update in October with most likely new hardware. So wait until then for the new batch of stuff.
otherwise this is perfect for holidays and on the road.

  • +2

I own a asus me400c, identical spec to this one. Atom runs fine! No glitches

  • Would be keen on a good price for a i3-i5, hopefully they will show up here soon..

  • Tempting but you can get a way better Android ARM tablet for less. Good deal if you really want an x86 Windows tablet though.

    • I find my atom tablet more responsive than my nexus 10. Plus, I can run MS Office and a huge variety of standard software.

    • ARM tablets are not a replacement for x86, they run fairly different applications. Likewise if you wanted a car you wouldn't consider a bike, because it won't suit your needs.

  • Low rez these days, deal breaker, new Atom's are totally different to the old ones on Netbook's, very good performers compared to ARM

  • wonder why theres no dock!!! seems to be hard to buy by itself… nothing on ebay!

    • tempting though i must say!

      • Eeekkksas $169 ;-/
Wonder if the folio cover will the tablet when on the dock?
Still a bit funny about being an atom, I have a Samsung slate tablet but it's 11.6' and I don't seem to use it to its full extent as I have a laptop, maybe sell that and buy this lols

  • hanging for the surface pro 2

    • You will wait for a LONG time because surface pro 1 has not even came to Aus yet!

      • globalisation. when it's released in the US i'll buy it/import it/have it imported by a friend. don't think there is any region locking to worry about

  • I will buy this only if it has digitizer.

  • Review suggests performance ain't great. Good price though.
    http://www.cnet.com.au/acer-iconia-w510-339343352.htm

  • Sorry for the noob question, but is this Surface from Microsoft?

    • -1

Not sure if I understand the question - but this isn't the Surface.

This is a Windows RT tablet by ACER running Windows 8 RT.

I'm more of a fan of Windows 8 Pro on the Surface Pro, but it's about 10 times the price.

      • +6

This is a Windows RT tablet by ACER running Windows 8 RT.
I'm more of a fan of Windows 8 Pro on the Surface Pro, but it's about 10 times the price.

No this is a Full Windows 8 tablet, NOT the RT version, running Windows 8.

It's effectively the same as the Surface Pro, just with a much slower CPU. (Intel Atom vs Core i5)

        • Oh, really? Wow.

I have to give this a +1 then. Great price.
The Surface Pro is only about 3 times the price
          My bad.

      • +3

I'm pretty sure this is running Windows 8, NOT RT.

Windows RT is designed for ARM.

    • C'mon dude…

    • -1

This is Acer's version of the Surface RT, but it runs regular windows so all your normal apps will work. It's not as powerful as the Surface Pro though, which costs over $1k.

      • +2

Nope it's an x86 tablet not arm so no it's not like surface rt at all

        • +1

It's Acer's version of the Surface RT in that it does everything the Surface RT can do (and more) and is of similar price, power, weight, and battery life. BUT it runs an x86 processor so all your normal apps will work.

Atom tablets are the reason why RT is pointless.

  • what cases or covers are recommended?

There is complimentary one year accidental damage protection on notebook and tablet purchases available here:

    http://www2.acer.com.au/acercareplus/index.html?utm_source=L…

Also send them an old PC and you get $120 to spend at the acer online store.

    http://www.acerstore.com.au/acer/store/index.php/recycle#

This should partially fund the keyboard? :)

    • $120 voucher only can be used for purchase over $400 or $500 i forgot

      • yep :(

4.2 The $120 Voucher can be redeemed for any order value of $599 or greater at Acer Store.

  • Hi all, I can confirm that this can't be matched at Officeworks.. after heading down to a store, sticking around for a while then getting a call back from them… Office works has confirmed that their version is exclusive to them and isn't sold at other retailers.. The JB one is defiantly different, ie. processor speed and also HDD. They will not price match.

To add to this, Officeworks had it priced at $488 and the rep their informed me it has now been increased to $538 lols!

    • +1

It's the same processor - the Atom 2760 is rated at "up to" 1.8 GHz by Intel.

Officeworks will do anything to get out of price matching, including straight out lying to customers.

    • See, I had a different experience, I bought one today at OW and the code on the box matches the code on the JB site.. and the speed is the same, 1.5 to 1.8.. Not sure what you're saying about the HDD being different? Either way, seems Newcastle OW are fine selling it at the cheaper price and I noticed when it scanned that it was over $500 now..

    • Hi, I was lucky enough to get a price match at Officeworks. I think it just depends how picky the staff are on details. They called JB to confirm stock levels and price and that it was "64gb". Didnt even ask about the processor. Ended up giving it to me for $365.56..

  • yeah the price of this item at OW has been up and down between $538 and $481 in a while now, i guess in anticipation of JB hifi's price =)

  • anyone in brisbane wants to team up to buy the keyboard dock from acer store so we can save on ($20) shipping cost?

    • came on… no one wants to save $20?

the dock is very handy as it give us a full size USB port!

      • I think people are more concerned at the $169 price of the keyboard dock…

        • +1

yeah but there is no other better option. sourcing from the US will also end up paying around $160-170 :(

  • this acer or the nexus from DSE?
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/102726

    • Well, depends if you want Android or Windows?

    • that's a 7 inch non-windows

REVIEW - Time to set a few facts straight and give you my opinion. I've owned this device for 3 months and know it well. (Disclaimer - Bit of a Win Fanboi: Win7 at home & work, Win8 on HTPC, WHS2011 on server and Windows on Nokia Lumia 920)

*Some people need to realise that THIS IS NOT A LAPTOP OR MEANT TO REPLACE ONE. It is a tablet with an optional (and I believe handy) keyboard. It can perform light laptop duties (e.g. MS Office) and does them adequately.

PRICE - I paid $729 inc. keyboard after using $120 voucher direct from Acer. Price on offer is great and I would strongly recommend getting the k/b.

KEYBOARD - A must IMO. Not the best dock I've used. Touchpad and keys are sometimes unforgiving, but very helpful when typing in notes for a meeting or word processing (though wouldn't want to write a thesis with it). DGMW, the onscreen keyboard is very good but sometimes you don't want half the screen's area taken up by the keyboard. Touchpad is also necessary if you want to use Win8 desktop on that little screen. Importantly, also doubles your battery life.

BATTERY LIFE - Nothing better on the market running full WIN8. Took this thing on 15hr flight to Europe watching 1080p encodes (I don't compromise with media quality)and unit was up to the challenge.

PERFORMANCE - For my needs adequate. Use it for emails, browsing, meetings, travelling, light entertainment and very happy. The Atom is not the fastest but I prefer longer battery life over extreme performance. Please don't regurgitate stats on its gaming performance or how quickly it transcodes video. That's what desktop PC's and high performance laptops are for.

WINDOWS 8 - Hmmm, not for everyone but I quite like. Certain apps including mail, photo & pdf viewer and Internet Explorer are still a bit limited and there seems to be a few bugs here and there. But still a decent experience and this form factor works so well because moving your hands from the keyboard to the screen for swipe actions is more ergonomic than extending your arms to a desktop monitor. Experience is much better on this compared to a full size laptop.

SUMMARY - 8/10. This device is perfect as a mini laptop you can take in the car with you, to uni, site meetings or to bed. It is lightweight with and without the keyboard and the build quality is very decent. Hopefully when Win8.1 is released, the experience gets even better.

    • thx for info

    • Thanks for bringing some actual experience to the conversation - who the hell uses a table to transcode video?? Not much better from whoever wrote that online review that was posted earlier. I just went and got it price-matched at OWs (Bunbury WA) with 5% extra off - very happy. No probs like other posters have talked about with 1.5 v 1.8 Ghz perceived discrepancy. Then got me some 20% dvd at JB, so they all got some business from me today.
If anyone knows where to get genuine Acer dock for this at a bargain price pls post some details.

  • anyone aware if you can PXE boot these and install a custom Windows 8 image/application to them using SCCM for instance?

    • +1

Yes, you can. At least they do it at my work. I do believe you need a special network adapter for the PXE boot though (~$20?)

      • Thanks , appreciate your response :)

  • Also anyone knows how to reinstall win 8 only, without the acer bloatware?

    • This is what I'm learning to do. I think you can do it via USB flash drive and powered USB hub but I still haven't seen to much documentation on it.

The Acer driver page won't load for me so I can't do it yet.

      • how would you install via USB drive, i mean are you going to use your own Win 8 installation setup?

Coz the Acer one is just a partition recovery, which will recover everything including the bloatware.

I read some forums they were able to upgrade it to vanilla Win 8 Pro. But I dont want to buy pro upgrade ($60??) thus would like to hear from anyone who has successfully install just win 8.

      • doesn't seem to be very impressive. what's the difference with Revo Uninstaller if we still have to choose manually which software to uninstall?

  • gave in and brought one online as my local store didn't have..
wondering if JB's version comes with a case, as office works 'slight different' version does

    • It does, it's in the ad on the JB site

  • So those that bought it how are you finding it when you have multiple applications open? And 1080p playback via hdmi out?
