Dick Smith CD Micro System with iPhone Docking $13

40

DSE clearance again, Perth has stock a Cannington and Claremont at least, according to website.
More suited to kids bedroom than a party, but costs less than a CD.

The Dick Smith CD Micro Hi-Fi System with iPod Dock features 2 x 5W speakers, FM radio tuner and line level AUX audio input. It has a top loading CD player and is MP3, CD-R, CD-RW disc compatible.

edit: OK, I admit I did not see or test this item. Maybe got a bit kind to DSE after getting some great bargains there recently including the Philips bluetooth phone dock/speakers for $22.

In hindsight I would not have posted this without click&collect. Don't bother chasing "low stock" stores, but a number of shops showing "in stock" are worth a ring if you want this.

review doesn't sound too good, especially this comment…

The constant static background noise both when music is and when music isn't playing. This is the real deal breaker for me and will be for anyone who has speakers set up near to them.

    I think I'll keep my $13 and say pass…

    • Thanks jv.

    • This'd be great for putting you to sleep then, it'll generate a constant background noise

    Springvale 10.4 In Stock

I FOUND A STORE IN STOCK GUYS, but dick smith brand anything is a no from me

  • +1

I saw it today and checked stock. No stock so didn't put it here. There are lots of thing on clearance but NO STOCK.

  • Sounds like this item is almost all phantom stock, but may be a rare 1 or 2, but not the minimum stock level required for listing on OB.

Stores listed with "Limited Stock - please phone store" probably have no stock, just 1 that was lost/damaged/stolen/used-in-staff-area still exists on their system until EOFY stocktake, when this stock item should automatically be removed from site.

Don't waste your time chasing phantoms. OP should have checked minimum stock was available before posting - OB rule so people don't waste their time. No wonder why people are tired of Dick, (but it is OzBargainers incorrectly posting these deals).

    • +1

As an example of Phantom stock, there is no stock of the 99c photo frames at my local DS - I know them & they did a good search. I then returned 3 FAULTY ones, and stock level today is "In Stock"! No stock does exist. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/106062
Also stock on HOLD also shows as "In Stock" if around 2 or more, and "Low Stock" if around 1, but stock is only available if not picked up. Found that was the case with 24" Samsung monitor deal.

  • stock in springvale vic atm…

    edit: already mentioned

  • In stock in cannington & carousel WA. Noone is forcing anyone to pay attention to DSE deals posted here.

    • Stock may not exist - unless you have got confirmation from the store, which can't happen yet. DS stock system is unreliable, it depends a lot on the staff at the individual stores & good annual stocktake (probably last undertaken nearly a year ago).

True, no one has to look at any deal, but there is a minimum stock requirements to post deals on OB.

(DSE became DS after phasing out electronic parts & kits some time back. OB hasn't caught up, still listing this as a DSE deal.)

      • So all on clearance deals should not be posted here even they are not DSE deals? Or you suggest that all OP should call all stores to find out the total stock number in each store before they post them up here?
I think OP has done a stock availabilty quick search in WA online is fair enough instead of "oh i picked up the last in store and not sure any left in other stores".

        • It is an OB requirement (not mine) to check there is adequate stock before posting, like…

I saw it today and checked stock. No stock so didn't put it here. There are lots of thing on clearance but NO STOCK.

Apart from the word Clearance, the OP failed to indicate that there may be very limited stock nationally. That is pretty normal on these deals.

Link to deal on mobile site unusually does not go to deal. http://m.dicksmith.com.au/Product/AE2851/DS-CD-Micro-System-…

There has been so much heated debate on this already - bring it up here (I am a long time Dick liker) http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105258

Deals not meeting the OB requirement of minimum stock have already lead to many calls for DS to be banned, which I have forcefully argued against. Don't want this deal to be used as ammunition against all DS deal's.

        • +1

So you think there is less than 10 items aus wide?
I don't see why would anyone discourage people posting good deals up here as long as it does not breach the rules. Those suggesting banning DSE deals maybe they keep on missing them or not available in their areas but still minority of us benefits from it.

        • Quite possibly very few of this reportedly low quality product nationally. Managers like to move larger low value stock onto the bargain tables to clear shelves for higher margin stock.

I have found that stock levels may be wrong when people return faulty stock, but it still remains in the back room. This is more likely in small or remote stores & more likely after staff redundancies at the end of last month.

If you read my posts arguing DS should not be banned, you would have seen I have already discussed your question.

(I have boxes of unopened DS "low stock" clearance deals from last 2 weeks. At least there was stock.) But many consider it is OBers posting deals with almost no stock that bring these DS deals into disrepute.

With the clearance of whole categories of stock imminent, EOFY would be the worst time to have DS banned!

Handy if people post after they find stock. Ringing the store may result in disappointment, unless you get staff to check actual stock exists, is available, & if it is New or display. Get them to hold it.

On a recent DS deal I found two different batches of stock existed in same stores, and only 1 batch worked. So much of the stock that existed on their system was a waste of time. Staff I talked with were unaware they were selling dead units. My returned dead stock will probably still appear as available. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/106062

East Coast has been selling for about 2 hours, so who has bought?? Where? Any other stock?
Whats it like (sound etc) to help our Western cousins.

    • +2

Found (part of) 1 at my local DS (Carindale - "low stock"). Not fit for sale!

Staff thought I was crazy even looking at it, let alone test it plugged in.

Only display 1, missing all packaging, cables, instructions & importantly the remote (needed to change sources)!!!

Shelf price $26+ down from a ridiculous $99!

Quality does not spring to mind. Imagine taking plastic boxes a little sturdier than an ice cream tub, & fitting cheap system inside + shitty "5W" speakers.

Why choose this rare beast when for $5 more that store have plenty of the DS CD BOOMBOX for iPod/iPhone? Marked down from $129. Different shape/purpose, but same specs, also with remote, iPod/iPhone charging dock, 3.5mm aux in, but added USB input. C0853 it CO853 - not found on mobile site.

      • And the unit is TINY, or was that TINNY ;)
Front has a round iPod type interface, with power button & 3.5mm Aux input.
Orange display for CD player & radio.
Rear has Video out RCA socket.

From this experience, I guess 1 in every "In Stock" store will be a useless display unit, and "Low Stock" will only be display stock or faulty unit.

    • Got some great DS deals recently that weren't available for C&C. Have been a Dick buyer since the first store in Qld.

This one just did not seem like a good deal, old so likely to be few stock, or be display stock with parts missing. Almost all stores had no stock - main sign this was never going to fly.

Have got to know too much about DS systems & management over years. Used to buy old stock (with missing parts) from the stores at crazy prices years ago. Now I buy just for my own use.

[Individual managers would bring me in to liquidate stock. I usually paid 9% of listed price. With a display stock unit I would gamble that I would find another unit & teach a learning remote the code. So I would only be willing to pay about $5max for the unit I saw & $9 for a boxed one. A manager who took over a DS in a major shopping centre was OK with 9%, except on a $400 TV. He had been cleaning up & threw the rubish out in a box - belonging to the TV. He had the manuals, but not the expensive remote. I turned up to haggle with a bag of remotes. He took 1 look & offered it to me for $50. Took about 20 minutes to get it set up. He had tested every remote in the store, not realising you can download most codes to a Harmony remote. Those were the days, but taught me to assess a deal, or I'd lose a lot of money. But it was just a bit of fun, not my work.]

  • Picked one up - thanks to the staff at Malvern :) Speakers not very good.

    • You seem to be the only taker.

At quoted pathetic "5W" output and thin shelled tiny plastic enclosure, it never had a chance. Really an insult to an iDevice to dock with it :-)

      • It's not that it's 5W which would be fine for most people. The sound is really poor and tinny. (The system is super light - each speaker weighs 394 gms, total weight of system 1.7 Kg)

        • I would guess that quoted 5W is driven by a common cheap 1+1W stereo chip, but it would give reasonable sound. So seems like poor cheap design. Weight of unit does not indicate much heatsinking. The usual overstating of audio output was what I was getting at - it will never be 5W, which as you say would be adequate for most in a unit like this.

Without some mass, those cheap speaker enclosures will be worse than useless. Even the DS staff criticised the unit based on how light & tinny the unit is.

DS originally sold this product for $99!! Even at $13 it is not worth the bother.

Recommend return for refund - a sound system without satisfactory sound is defective.

  • I got one today from Doncaster, VIC. The sound isn't 'tinny' like a tin-can at all. It has equalizer settings too which helps. Thanks OP.

    • +1

With no remote or manual for the one I tried, it had no way to change sound. For the price it was probably OK, but sounded far worse than the iPhone boom box on special for $5 more.

So that makes 2 units reported bought & 1 unsaleable display stock . No where near the minimum level for posting a deal on OB.

At least this makes a total of 1 happy customer!
