For comparison, build your own system from MSY:

    G-B EX58 DS4 $339
6G Kit (3x2G) DDR3 1333 Kingston $174 (double the RAM, cost-wise there's little reason to drop it down)
    Seagate SATA 500G $89
    512M 4850 Gigabyte / ASUS $245
    Core i7 920 $469
    SATA Pioneer 216 $31
    Antec NSK6580 $128
    24” 2ms HDMI WS Acer P244WB($270 after $79 cash rebate) $349
    OEM Logitech Desktop 350 $27
*OEM MS 64 bit Vista VHP $183
    Total $2034 inc GST

Yeah, the Dell buy is definitely a bargain. The 2 year warranty makes it even better.

Nice spot on the removal of Anti-Virus.

    • Dell also includes a legit copy of Windows :)

      • +2

        So does the above system…

        • Soz..missed that :(

    • missing a power supply u need a good one for i7 + good graphics card i'd go for 650 watts

      100$ more :)

      • i7 920 uses about 120W under full load, 4850 uses around 110W under full load, rest of the system around 50W. The draw on the +12V rails would be around 22A.

The Antec NSK6580 comes with an EarthWatts 430W PSU which has 30A available on the +12V rails, tested by numerous independent reviewers to be able to supply that with commendable and well within spec noise and ripple on the rails.

The system as is would work just fine. Much like the Dell you wouldn't want to overclock it very far or throw in an extra graphics card, but as is it'd be fine just fine.

  • Very good deal

Dont forget the EPP discount http://dell.communicates.to/epp/au/ - so long as your a member of the RACV / NRMA or a company who has EPP -> an additional 8% off :-)

    • Yea, that's brilliant with an 8% discount I think Dell would have to be almost making a loss on it… it then comes down to: Incl. GST $1,718.66

    • reading the link you wrote, it says 'availible for employees, studennts and members…. selected online'. so how do I become a member, to get this 8%, as I am a full time student? tried that regestation on the bottom but no coupon :(.
will definitely get this soon :)

      cheers,

  • $1,718.66 using 8% discount GFJVN23QJRZ?VM from http://dell.communicates.to/epp/au/

  • How do you minus $130.90 on anti virus?

    • Go through the entire customisation process, and when you get to the virus package choice part go for the McAfee 30 day trial.

  • +1

yeah yeah and then Dell will claim a technical error
    anyway +1 for the finding

  • it's still a Dell though…

  • Just a warning - as I'm seriously considering this system … when built the dell web site states:

Remarks Discount is only valid if the corresponding upgraded item is selected above.
Remarks Limited time promotional offer only. No further discounts apply.

So yes Dell might well claim a technical eror….. Sorry I didnt scroll down far enough earlier.

    Hmmmmm……

  • Good stuff.
Downgrade the monitor and you pay extra.
Downgrade to no Anti-Virus (I use free AVG) and pay less.
    Dodgy Dell.
    System went through.
Don't see why it would not be honoured.

Might go to a Dell Kiosk and see if this can be done.
Would get at least 5% off at kiosk but not so sure about 8% EPP discount.

  • I used to recommend Dell to my clients (I sort out computers) because of the good bang for buck factor, but I don't now because they have so many proprietary components in them. A couple of examples:
Had a TV tuner card that had a lead that connects to the power button-to-motherboard connection to turn the computer on when a recording is due. Dell use their own type of connection so it didn't work.
The Dell cpu cooler attachment is peculiar to Dell, you cant fit aftermarket coolers (though Dell ones are pretty good).

  • Unless you plan to encode video for a few hours every single day, you'd be much better off to add a few $ and do a simple and safe fsb overclock of the system below to 3.8GHz/400MHz, I'll use MSY prices and components even though they're not always the best:

    Intel Core2Duo E8500 (3.16GHz) - $303
    ASUS P5Q Pro - $219
    2x1GB 800MHz Kingston CL4 - $61
    512MB Radeon 4870 - $339
    WD 1TB AV - $175
    24" Acer P244WB - $270 after $79 cashback
    XP Pro - $199
    Seasonic PSR 650+ - $158
    Antec Solo Case - $138
    Zalman CNPS 9700LED - $73
    Pioneer SATA 216 - $31
    +$70 Assembly & Installation

=$2036 with all parts significantly better then the Dell i7 system, case and cpu fans can be run on minimum speed for an almost silent machine while maintaining a low temperature. The keyboard, mouse and card reader are all a couple of bucks if you want them cheap…

    • +1

Core i7 WILL be significantly faster with any type of photoshoping or graphic editing (amoung other software)that utilises the 4 cores/8 threads. This performance gap will only get larger and extent to more and more computing tasks as software coding catches up. For currect gaming your maching smashes the Dell, but thats not the point. This is a good deal for those who want a decent allrounder and I'd guess will be "current", performance wise, for longer than most off the shelf systems.

      • Don't be ridiculous ozdavo, Photoshop CS3 isn't even a fully multithreaded ap, only some tasks (might as well go buy a Mac if you work on Photoshop many hours a week). Not many multithreaded apps even exist or will be used by most people for hours on end, so therefore my system will be faster or on par for almost everything except video encoding like I said (3.8GHz dual cores with an easy and safe overclock of which you use 1 and a half vs 2.66GHz quad cores of which you use 1.5, no contest), and my configuration will always be faster for graphics as it has a better graphics card and you can upgrade the non Dell system without paying through the nose as well as overclock it. Every component will perform better, from a better quality and larger hard disk to much better case and power supply etc. So for an all rounder the i7 isn't better at all, only for heavy use of specific multithreaded apps.

If you're referring that in a few years games and all software will fully use multithreading, that is irrelevant as by then both systems would be equally obsolete compared to 16 core processors of which all 16 are fully utilised for example.

    • Put the Core i7 parts from the 1st build into this system and your looking at around $2500.
Dell can build me something for around $1775 (with 5% discount).

Are you going to get 40% more performance out of your system?
(Because thats how much more its costs than the Dell)

      • You're talking about a core i7 system comparison, but why get core i7 when it is costlier and slower for most things? Bragging about having the latest i7 and keeping mum regarding it's worse performance in 98% of applications out there?

  • I'm seriously tempted… Any review on the monitor? It seems a bit different to the 2408 that they currently sell for $999.

    • +1

No, the included monitor is a cheap S2409WFP. To upgrade to 2408WFP (the $999 one, which is a much much better VA panel), you need to pay $663.30 more. I wish they could exclude the monitor to make the package a better deal.

      • Haha yea, already picked up one when they were selling then for $250 last year. Fantastic monitor for what it cost. If i get this system, will i really need another extra 24"?

      • But the Dell 24" Entry (E248WFP) Wide Screen Flat Panel LCD Monitor (ANA, DVI) [add $113.30 or $1/week-1] is a CHEAPER monitor by $10 normally (and $110 with current Dell discount).
Its basically the same monitor just different brightness.
Why am I paying $113.30 more for the same monitor?

        • A quick search showed the 2409 has a contrast ratio of 1000:1, whereas many now boast that of 20,000:1. Is it really that much behind?

          • @jace: Correct me if i'm wrong, but afik, thats all just marketing hype, i've seen monitors boast a 100,000:1 ratio before.

  • Can remove the monitor making it $1430ish ;)

    • really? how? I couldn't find such option.

      • Has to be done manually not available on website.

        • What did you mean by 'manually'? Call Dell sale line?
          Thanks.

        • I'm also wondering what u mean by 'manually', pls clarify. I would like to get rid of others parts manually if possible (like the keyboard and mouse)
ill try to call Dell this afternoon to get more info. cheers

          • @constantly L8: Yes we just remove the monitor around $300 off price

            • @GerrardLFC: I just called them this afternoon and I asked to take out the monitor. they said its possible however they can only take off $177 and also cannot remove the anti-virus ($130.9, as its 'complementary', by fone).

they said they can take off 8% for being a student and therefore the total price she offered was: $1677 (without the monitor,

              ($1999-$177)*0.92% = $1677)

dont know if shes just being a sales person and holding back on a better deal but this is what i got when i did this 'manually' on the fone.
said ill think about it and call her back but the online way seems better ($1,718.66 using 8% as samba said above)

              hope this helps

              • @constantly L8: Total should be $1468 after remove monitor

                • +1

@GerrardLFC: geraldlfc - rather than being cryptic, can you tell us how in plain english you got the price you did without the monitor (eg: I rang them, spoke to consultant, had them remove the monitor, the antivirus software) and received the following order acceptance.

Am I the only one not getting your cryptic updates?

                  • @pw2002au: agreed,
                    please explain GerrardLFC

                    • @constantly L8: I just went throught the process.

                      • You can take the AntiVirus off
                      • A further $200 is taken off for the monitor (apparently its a free upgrade to 24" and only the original monitor price can be taken off)

It works to between 1650-1700 without the monitor and AntiVirus.

                      • @skinny: In that case, you'd be better off getting the 24" and flogging it off to someone else. i'm guessing you should be able to fetch at least $250, seeing as many 24"es are well in excess of $300, bar the Acer ones with the cashback promo.

                • @GerrardLFC: how can the monitor be removed?

                  • @Headstrap: Call Dell and they will give you their e-mail to forward the quote and remove it for you. You should normally get a quote from them and then you can organise your payment.

  • I'd rather an NVidia in this system but my guesses are it would be too power-hungry. Overall though a very good price.
