  • price error? the same model but yellow one is $498.

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/EM5171/nokia-lumia-820-windo…

    • +2

No, I have confirmed the price at the store.

      • cool, and they are really plenty of stock

  • thats a really good price…
competitive to htc 8x from mobileciti.
also lumia 920 $488 @ HN from my previos post.
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/106917

  • How does it compare to the htc 8x - pros/cons?

    • +1

Good price.. The HTC is $30 cheaper and 30gms lighter..

    • 8X:

      Better screen
16gb (a big plus since you cannot not install on sd card with WP8), but no expansion

      820:

      8gb, allows for micro sd
      Nokia exclusive apps

      • Don't forget the camera on the Lumia phones!

        • Good point, camera performance on the Lumia phone are vastly superior, especially under low light.

        • +1

8x and 820 have very similar back /main cameras.
BUT, 8x has much much better front camera, even much better than the 920.

        • But it DOESN'T have access to all the Nokia free stuff which is considerable. No point going HTC when a Nokia is this price.

        • 8X does not come with turn-by-turn navigation software.

      • +2

htc's has much better screen resolution.

        • This is the winner…

    • +2

I'm making the same comparison myself. For me, the 8x has much nicer physical design, but the Lumia 820 seems like it has far better software support from Nokia. eg. turn-by-turn navigation, camera apps/lenses etc.

So just picking out a couple of specific points, does anyone know whether it is possible yet to get the following on the 8x?
      - Nokia Here/Drive maps and navigation in Australia
      - HDR capability on the 8x camera

      • nokia maps are not available to other brand phones, maybe you can have it after jail break…
lots of photo editing apps from marketplace, you can have a try.
i dont understand why ppl are so keen on HDR though…because of apple?

        • Thanks mrgeckoz. But I did a quick online search, looks like Nokia Drive is in fact available for non-Nokia phones, just not in Australia yet.

Is there such a thing as 'jail breaking' for WP8?

Re HDR - I don't see it as an Apple-specific thing. To my knowledge it's a pretty popular style of photography these days.

        • Jail breaking is not available for WP8. for now.

  • +2

probably quicker just to price match from JB and HN if they accept it

    • I walked into store and JB refused to price match as they are clearance sales.

  • crazy price!

  • Was $448 @ DSE (Exp 22/3/13)

    Good find OP

  • Darn .. Sydney George Street store is out of stock ..

  • too bad the wireless charging kit promotion has ended.

    • yes! too bad. i checked the promo as well. ended :(

      • I thought that was for the 920…?

        • 820 and 920

  • Can windows 8 phones sync gmail contacts? I use android and contact sync is so smooth with android.

    • cant guarantee, but there is tick boxes for gmail contacts and calendar.
but ive heard google calendar doesnt like wp8

    • +2

I know with the 820 you can.

      • thanks guys…will pass windows until it can contacts from gmail. My only excuse to not buy this phone :D

        Seems a good deal..

        • +1

It can, even my Windows 7.8 does it, all the time.

    • +3

Yes they can. You just add a gmail account the same as you do for iOS and Android. Multiple Google calendars are a problem at the moment (not impossible…but damn near) but the next update to WP8/W8 is introducing CalDAV support to remedy this.

  • +2

Good price for non grey, and really like the phone for what its worth.

just to show off my ozbarganism, i bought a busted one from ebay and replaced the screen for about $198 :)

  • What do people think is best this or nexus 4 ? Thx

    • +3

I think you better not to compare Android and Windows Phone.

People will buy this if they really want to move to Windows Phone.

    • Nexus 4, but Nexus 4 is more expensive as well.

    • -2

I still not confident to move to Windows Phone because of apps.

      • +4

yes, the sheer number of them is quite daunting isn't it?

        • I think you'll find that superforever was saying that he's worried about missing popular/big name apps that you'll find on other mobile platforms. And at this stage of Win8's development, I think it is a legitimate concern.

  • +2

If I needed a phone right now, I would so Ozbuy this.

  • +3

The Samsung ATIV S also going for $399, cheap for local stock.

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/EM5132/samsung-ativ-s-window…

  • Is there anyone know about warranty on this one,24 months or 12 months?

  • Really good phone. I just bought one from Kogan not long ago for 310 delivered so this really good price get on it peeps.

  • Ordered one.
    Thnaks OP.

  • +3

Wow. Just Wow. a Nokia windows phone 8 4G phone for this price is ridiculous. I'd get this instantly if I didn't already have a Lumia920.

  • -8

very normal price for Windows phone

  • +2

Nokia wins, Nokia transit, nokia maps, nokia drive, city lense.. And bla bla…

  • What are games like on windows phone?

  • i did click and collect this morning at Burwood store, after an hour, someone call me out of stock….. what a ….. !!

    • +1

I reckon every Joe Blow is reserving one and when they realise they need to cough up almost $300 will cancel their online orders. I was going to reserve one myself without certainty of purchasing(until I do further research) but alas stock is low!

  • Not much stock available in western sydney :(

  • -2

Not sure if it is me but the screen on this Lumia phone is terrible. I use an iphone 4 + nexus 4 and both of them are superior in term of screen quality to Lumia when I compare in the store

    • it has to be good. when siri 1st came out and you ask siri what is the best phone, siri answered without doubt it is lumia 820? 920? forgot , one of the lumia series

even apple admit to it that iphone is not as good as nokia

  • Nice price, you can claim tax return in a single year.

    • +1

how you can claim it? work purpose? :)

      • That's correct.

  • What phone can this be comparable to besides the iPhone 4 and galaxy s3?

    • I wondered same. I am still not sure if I want to move from my ancient Garmin Asus Nuvi A50 Android 2.1 phone.

Can anyone suggest an Android phone in the $300 range? I would be looking for offline Navigation (not Google Maps as I am spoiled by my Nuvi included Garmin Navigation with lifetime updates) and enough grunt to play h264 movies (the Nuvi only has a 600 MHz processor :-( ).

Also does Win8 phones have Swype keyboards or similar options for download? [edit - answered my own Q after googling - no swype but predictive text and voice to text is supposed to be very good on WP]

      Cheers

after 5 months usage I have following issues:

random rebooting 1-2 times a day. ( not a lot?)

Screen freezing when try to take a incoming call,(need to slide the bar to answer)touch screen not responding, therefore you will have to miss the call. happens very often.

random Screen freezing and need reboot to make it working again.

lost GPS signal and won't work again until reboot.

Bluetooth issues: automatically starts playing music through phone speaker once disconnect bluetooch or after a phone call

No chrome, firefox, etc( not a issue of the phone, I know)

No updates to fix for the known issues for the last 5 months (one planned update was urgently cancelled in May by MS as bringing more issues)

all Nokia service centers are closed in SA and might have to mail the phone for service if needed while Apple and Samsung are opening new shops.

    • Are these commonly reported faults or have you been just a little unlucky?

    • This is scaring me. Can you say "dud" or do you prefer "lemon"?

    • +1

I used a Lumia 820 developer handset for about a month and didn't encounter any random reboots, screen freezes or GPS issues (or Bluetooth issues, but then I didn't use Bluetooth). I might have been lucky, however.

I'm sorely tempted to take advantage of the deal - the only thing holding me back is the Lumia 820's screen resolution, and the fact that I like my current phone. I might not be able to stop myself if the HTC 8X goes back on sale for $269, however :)

  • Wish the phone had more solid reviews, not many decent ones mentioning its negs and positives.

  • I have one on hold in Pakenham is anyone wants it?

  • Well I rather get a Lumia 720, much cooler.

    • The problem with 720 is it has 512MB RAM that could be trouble running some apps.

      • I wouldn't accept anything less than 1gb ram these days.

  • They have the yellow one on sale now, Online only!!!
I picked up the black one from local store though, black phones are always my colour of choice
