Cool. Anyone remember the android app that let's you change settings on your phone (turn wifi on/off, etc) when you scan an NFC tag?

EDIT: FYI OP - I always hate websites that make me sign up to checkout.

    • +1

Depends what OS, but for Android NFC Task Launcher works great.

    • Can anyone tell me what else do you use NFC for that LLAMA can't do ?

      • See my suggestions post further down the comments page.

  • -4

    2% surcharge for paypal payment.

      NTAG203

    • Link? Can't find it on their website

  • Just to confirm, are these stickers or like 'tags' as in you can't bend them?

  • Any chance of a discount if we want to buy more than 1 ?

    • There's a limit of 1 per customer.

    • The discount is only on one. The rest are full priced.

    • -2

sorry - to clarify - I want to buy more than one, and understand they are normally $1.50. I would like to buy, say, 6, at $1 each.

      • +3

We might consider it in the future, but at the moment they are staying limited to 1 per customer. Soz.

  • Thanks OP,

    Something to play with :)

  • do you need nfc-enable phones to work with it?

    • -1

Yes and an app ie blackberry z10 not so good for this

      Samsung s3 & s4 good
Sony xperia z good and sola

  • Comment below on suggestions of what to use them for.

ie put one in the car where you store your phone and program the phone to automatically activate/connect to Bluetooth.

    • +16

I use it for many things one example,

I get off the train and walk to the car, when i get to the car touch the nfc sticker it does the below with one touch,

      Disables wifi
Enables bluetooth and connects to my in car bluetooth
Sends a text message to my wife to let her know i am picking her up in 5 mins
Opens gps application with directions to home ( i can find my house this is just fun)
and turns the torch on (before i start the car, its dark)

Its like excel and macros, loads of fun stuff

      • ^ Didn't know you could do multiple actions..
Hopefully some other good suggestions to follow.

        • +2

download nfc launcher and see what you can do

      • and turns the torch on

=) for a minute i was thinking wow that's one smart torch (actual physical one… lol)

      • Disables wifi
Enables bluetooth and connects to my in car bluetooth
Sends a text message to my wife to let her know i am picking her up in 5 mins
Opens gps application with directions to home ( i can find my house this is just fun)and turns the torch on (before i start the car, its dark)

Well, Anyone on Android can do all of these without NFC , just use LLAMA.

The only catch is that you have to move away enough from the house to change mobile towers,

        • +1

Llama doesn't know when you get into the car and I've found it takes some time to recognise that it's out of a zone.

    • Other uses I can think of are:
      1) turn on WiFi when you get home (but I think a location aware app like Llama is a better solution for this)
      2) one on the bedside table and office desk to turn it to quiet mode
      3) one in the lounge to turn on Miracast to connect the phone to the TV (I grabbed an Optimus G with Miracast dongle from JB HiFi)

That's about the limit I can come up with.
Am I just not very creative?

      • +19

        Other uses:
Stick NFC sticker to forehead when you go to bed.
When your phone alarm goes off in the morning, without opening your eyes you can smash your phone onto your forehead and let NFC snooze your alarm for a few minutes.

        • LMAO

I bought a 30 pack from an Australian merchant last week for $30 delivered.
Originally planned to split between 3 work colleagues (10 each).

But once other work colleagues saw the novelty they wanted one too. Each of us ended up selling a few tags for $1.
It's funny because I mass emailed everyone the week before asking whether they wanted some NFC tags but no one responded.

If anyone else is interested in a 30 pack then feel free to try out:
    http://www.nfcwireless.com.au/

    • wow that sounds sweet. did you get the Smartrac Circus 30/50 one? just confused with different.. uh models?

30 tags for $30 is pretty sweet, how are they holding up? I assume you can assign multiple tasks to it as well?

EDIT: Ah ok I see below it was the NTAG203 you bought

  • How do you get free shipping??
    Edit - Found it.

    • +1

Select free shipping during the checkout.

  • +2

in the spirit of bargain, if you can get hold of hotel keycard, or any other card that have NFC inside it, you can use apps called NFC ReTag (Android) and then you can assign the task to it.
For example, I am using the MTR (Hongkong MRT ticket) that we forgot to get refund to do this.
Granted it's bigger than these tags, but it's free .. kind of.

    • Wow that's pretty cool

    • You should note it is a bit more limited than programmable tags.
As the device stores the code it will need to be deployed to each device.

With programmable tags a compatible device can read the tag and launch the code stored on the tag.

For example: I programed one of the NTAG203 tags to send a text message to a certain mobile number. My work colleague could also scan the same tag and the text message would pop-up.

      • Exactly, also with the non-writable tags, you need to click a button to get it work.

    • I am sure it is not FREE… The HK MTR ticket you forgot to refund cost $50HKD deposit, and you can get the $50HKD back if you return the card.

It is about $6AUD for your card

Also for Hotel Keycard, they will probably charge you if you steal it or report missing..

      • This is the different kind of MTR ticket, the one that I got from the machine.
The deposit was only 10c HKD = around 1.5c AUD

  • +1

Lumia 820 should be good with these ?

  • +3

Won't accept my Paypal payment (28 degrees).

    • +1

Don't know why I got neg for reporting a problem. I ended up paying via bank direct deposit.

    • Don't think anyone else is having the same problem. At least no one else has reported one.

  • +1

    .

  • Grabbed one. I got no idea what these are yet. I guess I will find out later.

Also got stung 2.67% Paypal surcharge when it said it was only a 2% paypal surcharge!

    • +5

      fair trading, stat!

      • Yeah, this actually cost me $0.77!! What a ripoff!

  • Sounds interesting. Can't wait to have a play. Thanks Rep!!

  • just got one..

  • +1

    Got one thanks :D
I never really understood NFC till recently. I own a NFC enabled phone and i have one of those flip wallet phone cases. I never understood why my phone would seemingly randomly make the NFC scan noises.. Turns out it was scanning one of my cards!

    • This raises a good point on the security of NFCs, including other RFID things like credit cards and passports etc. I've seen a video where someone scanned people's passports from inside his car while driving down a busy street.

      • +1

Credit cards and passport cards are locked (ive been reading up on it as of lately). I have an ID card here with NFC on it as well, and i cannot actually read the data off it, merely associate an action to be performed when i scan it.

As for that video? Thats a damn powerful NFC chip to pick that up… Even through my fake leather phone case the max distance i can still pick up my card is only about 3cm…

        • This is where I watched it, http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/02/video-hacker-war-drives-s…

But it looks like the video's been taken off Youtube since then. He had a large antenna connected to a laptop and some software he wrote.

        • I was looking at someone's kickstarter project based on a wallet made of a metal fabric to block the signal. If I could find fabric like that I'd put it in my own wallet & passport wallet.

        • The samsung tectiles packet has protection so you cant use them without opening the packet. I was going to throw it out, thanks for the idea.

  • Purchased one NFC tag, but the time it took to register, the price changed and got charged $1.53 for it. Website still displays $0.75 as the special price.

    • Please provide your order number and we will fix it. We started the new batch of orders at 1:15 and it hasn't been altered until about 10 minutes ago.

      • Thanks, Order# 100009640.

      • I had the same problem as FreakSource. My order number is # 100009796

  • +1

I bought one…. not sure why.

can people throw their creative hats on and come up with some more ideas as to what we should do with these things? I like the suggestions above.

And i can't load youtube at work, but i assume you need to physically make contact with the tag, right? So if it just near you, it won't accidentally scan?

    • +3

I have a tag programmed for wifi connection, I don't need to tell my visitors which SSID to connect and what passcode to use, just a tap.

I also have a tag at my bedside which helps me to set up alarm and turns the phone to silent mode with a tap.

The third tag I have is in my car, it turns the wifi off, bt on, vibration off and Drive Mode on for my S4 with 1st tap and turns wifi on, bt off, vibration on and Drive Mode off with 2nd tap.

I didn't root my phone, otherwise I can control more stuff like GPS etc.

      Hope it helps.

  • You can use it on iPhone if you have one of those Commbank Kaching cases…

    • Please elaborate on this. What app could be used with it?

      • .. for general programmable actions to take when tapping a tag. (Not Kaching use in particular)

      • Just search "NFC" in iTunes and you'll get a number of apps including NFC Tags (specifically compatible with iCarte), Wifi Go, NFC Actions, etc. Probably a better selection if your phone is Jailbroken through Cydia but I haven't looked much into the dark side :-)

        • +1

          Thanks but…
NFC Tags allows creation of a tag that contains smart poster (title + URL) or a vCard. No actions
NFC Actions requires the FloJack NFC accessory, not the iCarte
WiFi Go requires the ASUS NFC Express, not the iCarte

        • I'll be able to tell you more in a few weeks. Bought in iCarte on eBay to test it out :-)

        • I hope it was a new one. Did you know that if it has already been registered with Kaching then it can't be used for Kaching with a new user?

        • Ooh, I did not know that. But phew listing I bought it from explicitly says "new/never used"!

  • Damn, missed out. I've been meaning to play around with NFC tags for a while. Until next time, I guess.

  • I saw the video scubacoles posted, do you think it would be programmable in the near future (or today?) to replace my HID proximity card for my apartment? It's so damn chunky and breaks easily.

  • Under $10 for 10 (delivered) from Ali Express. Plenty of options depending on quantity you want.

  • Damn i missed it!

is cpl kind enough to send me another one?

  • Anyone got theirs yet.

  • I still haven't received my NFC tags or even the refund from the 8gb samsung SD card deal where the card was not sent, after at least 10 emails sent to their reps with them promising to refund my paypal payment.

  • Thanks, refund for 8gb SD card was just received, still awaiting NFC tag though.

  • Got mine yesterday
