      "order online and instore"

      • +2

I ordered online last time for the 128GB one and didn't get one, probably best to go in person.

It was sold out at 11 last time.

  • +1

is there a mSATA inside that thing?

Update: I just checked, this is just a regular 2.5 inch SSD.

  • Whats the quality like withthis brand? How does speed/performace compare to others SSD in this class?

    • +1

Quality is fine, speed & performance are also good (similar to Samsung 840 / Sandisk Extreme / etc.).

      • +5

This drive uses the more expensive and significantly longer lifespan MLC flash chips, better than the Samsung 840 which uses TLC, but slower than the 840 Pro which also uses MLC.

    • +1

i bought one a while ago and no issues and speed is great :) specially if your going from a traditional HDD. Going from other SSD's there isn't much in it that you would notice.

  • Will MSY put these on hold / aside on request?

    • From my understanding you have to pay for it on the day of the special, otherwise it reverts to the standard price. That was from the email I got sent when I got my 128 for $79 as part of their email

  • How do these compare to the Samsung ones?

    • +2

Great price for a 240-256GB drive. The drive has pretty good reviews and performs close to the Samsung 840 (and 830), but obviously not as well as the 840 Pro (look at the PX M5P for that tier of performance).

      Also note that it's a 9.5mm-thick drive unlike Samsung's 7mm range.

      • Thanks.

  • +1

Did I miss something? This SSD is already available from MSY for $169.

  • Alright, pulled the trigger this time. No more faffing or umming and ahhing over should I or shouldn't I (though I'm having trouble with the NAB applet not loading)

    Thanks.

    • I can't get the NAB java servelet to open on anything. IE, Chrome, Safari, work computer (Mac), home computer. Nope, nada.

Have sent an email off to MSY, see what happens.

You may like to update firmware first before installing stuff on it, the latest version is 1.04. You might not need to though, check the version of the drive on the label.

    128GB: http://www.goplextor.com/asia/index.php/download?task=view.d…

    64GB: http://www.goplextor.com/asia/index.php/download?task=view.d…

    1. Burn the downloaded ISO to a CD/DVD.
    2. Install the SSD.
    3. Boot off the CD/DVD and follow prompts to update.

i looked at it last time when i bought the 128G plextor, when i saw

Burn the downloaded ISO to a CD/DVD.

      then i gave up.

      • +4

        haha yeah, i don't actually have a CD/DVD drive in my computer…

      • +2

You can do it using a USB flash drive. The Plextor firmware is in a Linux ISO, so can use Unetbootin: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Plug in a USB drive first, run UNetbootin, select the create from CD image option (not the distro option), browse to the Plextor ISO, and select your USB drive.

Boot off the USB drive, you will get the UNetbootin screen, select BootCD and it will load up the Plextor flash tool.

  • I have had a plextor 256 M3 msata for a year and it is fine, but I won't buy ssd'd without toolbox software now as I like to check their integrity and run trim operations separately. Intel and Samsung are good in this regard.

    Nothing wrong with Plextor though.

    • Plextool: http://www.goplextor.com/asia/index.php/download?task=view.d…

You can't use it to manually initiate TRIM, but Win7 and 8 already auto-TRIM so there's need to.

      • I have found trim does not always work, especially if running in ide mode on older systems. I had a crucual m4 hang a couple of times under win 7, so I had to pull it and only connect the power supply not data cable for a few hours to let it trim. Worked well enough.
It is up to you whether this matters but for me I like to check my OS drives every month or so, and the intel toolbox at least gives me the feeling of being in control asi can check life and force a trim.

Not had any issues with the plextor yet though.

  • If you can't get there on the day of the sale pay for delivery otherwise you miss out.

  • Is it better or at par with SanDisk Ultra Plus SSD? Didn't manage to buy it yet but very eager now.

  • Is it possible to get it delivered without paying by credit card (additional 2% surcharge)?

  • Can vouch for these disks, very marginally slower than a Samsung 840 Pro, yet much cheaper, quite reliable. I've switched to these for my 'cheapie' machines and quite like them.

    • Just noticed these are also discounted @ PCCG (although not as cheap) I wonder if Plextor is pulling out, a shame because I'd rather avoid the similarly priced Sandisk, I believe it uses the same chipset as the OCZ models. (I've forgotten the name of the company)

(I need to buy these in about a month, not now)

      • The Sandisk use the Sandforce controller, however it's the same version that's used in the Intel 520, which is very reliable. Basically the issues with the older Sandforce drives were fixed and don't plague them anymore, so they're not comparable to the old OCZ models.

        • +1

True, but the main issue with Sandforce is its poor performance with incompressible data.

Anyway the Sandforce SF-2281 controlled Sandisk Extreme should be EOL. It's been replaced with the Extreme II using Marvell 88SS9187.

Sandisk's Plextor M5S competitor is now the Ultra Plus which uses Marvell 88SS9175.

        • +1

"poor performance" is a bit misleading. It still achieves 280MB+ write speeds for incompressible data.

Edit: Actually 380MB+ for the Plextor M5S: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6090/plextor-m5s-256gb-review/…

        • Maybe so but I am kind of partial to that Plextor series :/ a shame to possibly see them go.

  • plextor always appear neck to neck with samsung in benchmarks

  • +1

i like the sandisk ultra plus deal from a while back more, $159 shipped (i think) for a un-noticeably slower drive. they both use marvell controllers but i believe the sandisk one is meant for low power so it's a bit slower.

getting oh so close to my $150 target!

    • +1

$150 was my buy point. I cracked on this one though since I was already going to MSY. Stay strong.

  • Tried to pre-order online.
"Sorry, this product is currently out of stock in all NSW branches."

  • No one buys the Intel SSD's? Are they too pricey, or other issues?

    • I have an Intel 520 SSD in my laptop, it runs great.

    • +2

Heaps of people buy Intel SSDs.

They are by-far the most reliable SSDs on the market - 5 year warranty - and that attracts a certain expense (higher reliability means lower error margins for drives).

They are usually Top 3 for speeds though this next generation may change that.

Otherwise, they aren't often featured on OZB since they probably don't get discounted from the distributors, and well…it is Intel.

    • As mentioned plenty buy them, and I have one, but I do believe they're too expensive. Other brands are basically as reliable, with good enough performance, for a lot less money.

  • Just placed an order 10 minutes ago. Waiting for confirmation email.

    • Msy replied me to pick up in 24 hours
And i just did. No queue, the package doesnt look good tho.

  • $169 for 256 GB! No excuse for not having an SSD boot drive now.

  • Also waiting for confirmation. Ordered 1h30m ago.

  • Out of stock at Auburn awhile ago!

    • Ultimo is out of stock too

    • Got one @5pm! Nice fella at Hurstville branch. Manufactured : Mar 2013, F/W 1.03
This'll be my first SDD experience, anticipating the boot/read time to be great!

  • Got one from Ultimo during the day, it's working great. Very pleased :)

  • Got 1 today from Pt. Adelaide. Easy done, registered on website to hold stock, received confirmation email 30mins before the store opened. Collected 6pm on way home from work.
Just logged back on after cloning old HDD. Works great, bit on an overkill for my aging laptop running SATA I, but still a significant improvement over a 2.5" 7200rpm drive.

    • what sort of speeds do you get as i have a few puters that I want to upgrade

      • Tested using H2testw with a 10GB test file
        Write 186MByte/s (55 secs)
        Read 194MByte/s (52 secs)

Doing a windows 'copy & paste' of the same 10GB of data:
        took 1min 21secs, or approx 126MByte/s

This is all while connected to a SATA I port
