Yep! They sure do. That might explain why all of our current and next gen consoles seem to be rocking AMD-based GPU's.

    • +15

Actually dollar value wise the perform better than nVidia, and you would be hard pressed to find a nVidia card for less than double this price that performs as good.

You may have your preferences but some people prefer good value rather than being a fanboys of certain brands.

    • +12

      its AMD ya noobian

looks like you won't be touching the ps 4 or xbox one for its entire life cycle

    • +2

Is there an award for 50 negs?

      • I feel like this website needs to start giving awards for that stuff.

    • Maybe this is out of context. Maybe he meant to say…ATI support sux in linux. In which case I sooo agree with you.
but bitcoin miners sure love ATI and its pretty nice quiet and cool compared to a nvidia card of similiar specs. It is usually better priced.

      • ATI support sux in linux. In which case I sooo agree with you.

AMD have far better open drivers and open a lot more of the hardware spec. Their closed drivers aren't as good, but if you hit bugs with the nvidia closed drivers you are sunk.

    • +10

what does this even mean? Tiers are somewhat arbitrary. If nvidia outperform amd on a tier, surely it on a different tier ;)
      Great price OP

    • AMD is not in the clock race

they tend to balance value:performance:power consumption

I believe nvidia gives more power but takes more at the same time

      • +1

GPUs have never been sold on clock, outside of like for like chipsets, so I don't think there ever was a clock race (unlike CPUs).

Also the TDP Across AMD and Nvidia's ranges are pretty similar (though this particular card is good).

Have anything to back up your beliefs?

oh yah 7850 is slightly better card according to tom's XD

but again, games are always coded differently and favor either AMD or Nvidia

BF 3 players should stick to nvidia as the damn game is coded more efficiently towards it (read it somewhere on b-log)

what I meant about 'clock race' is to be always on top in terms of performance, although their GPU department is still able to go neck to neck with nvidia sometimes

    • Apart from this not making sense it actually isn't true any more. Right now this and the 7870LE are some of the only options where AMD is ahead (assuming you don't value the gaming bundle much).

Never settle does affect things a lot though.

    • +4

There are winners and losers in every price tier. Usually in the budget GPU category (say in the $100 mark), AMD has the upper hand. The same could also be said for $200 price mark (7870 Tahiti for instance would be a much better choice than 660TI — it's cheaper by a significant margin, but has equal or better performance).

If you are just being a fanboi and sticking with just one brand (whether that's a car, mobile phone or toilet paper), then you're missing on getting a product that could give you better performance for your money. Brand loyalty gets you nowhere….

    • no it's not you dumb idiot.

Top tier dual graphics card right now is the amd 7990. It beats any nvidia card.
For single graphics card top tier level. The Gtx titan and Gtx 780 are up there. Amd's best single graphics card at the moment is a generation behind nvidia's one because they are busy making chipsets for xbox and ps4 consoles.

    • Not sure why you're getting negged, it's actually somewhat true.

Stock clock on respective tier - NVIDIA
      Price/performance - ATI

Now when you bring in overclocking into the equation, tables turn.
7950 is known to reach 1-1.15ghz - which puts it within ~5% range of the 7970/670

If you've owned high end NVIDIA's you'd know they don't have as big of an overhead with regards to OC'ing. If you want the best without overclocking then go NVIDIA. It's also well regarded that NVIDIA drivers update more frequently and are more stable. Not sure about this since I've been using beta drivers for my 7970 for about 6 months now and no game refuses to run (they're not all amd sponsored games).

But i think NVIDIA still scales better with multiple gpu's

      • +1

Or you could just completely ignore which brand is better as a whole and only look at the cards you can actually afford? It's like this 7790 is probably the best card you can get for $100 but what's the point of looking at it if you've got $500 to spend.

  • +2

    Estimated shipping to 7000:
    Nationwide Express $34.99
    Nationwide Delivery $18.68

  • +3

$112 shipped to 3000, about $40 cheaper than MSY. Good deal.

    • Indeed, a fantastic price…

  • +3

Wow, absolute steal at this price.

Like Tom's hardware says, it's about the same performance as the old GTX 560, 650 ti, or HD 6870: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-rev…

I have a 7790, plays lots of new games at high or even max settings. Easily worth around $150.

    • not sure if I should get this or CF my 6850… hmmm

      • I bet you could get something for that 6850 on ebay. Take a look what at they are going for.

        • I agree. I'm not going to notice a slightly lower res (I'm on 1400x900) but I will notice frame drops.

    • +1

i think it's a good card for those running lower res monitors

never liked huge ass monitors anyway so lucky me :p

    • I still have my XFX 5850 Black Edition….plays everything on high settings still. No need to get this, but a great price all the same (esp with the free game)

Get BioShock Infinite w/ this purchase. Coupon Code: AB49773. Offer ends 31/10/2013 or While Stock Lasts

Might want to put that up.

  • Use coupon code: AB49773 to get a free copy of Bioshock Infinite

  • PowerColour? What the differences between them and say MSI, spaphire, Asus or gigabyte as seen on MSY.

    • Different cooler design and that's about it. Gigabyte and Asus offer 3 year warranty, the rest (Powercolor included) offer 2 years. You can't really choose a bad brand but Powercolor would be considered the budget brand of the lot merely because it's almost always the cheapest.

      • That's not about it at all.

Higher-end vendor models have a custom PCB entirely different from the reference design with more power supply phases, thus the ability to handle more voltage (which in turn means you can generally overclock to a higher degree), in addition to having much more durable and longer-lasting capacitors, MOSFETs, chokes, copper as well as an all-round better build quality.

A few vendors like Gigabyte have OC'ed models that have been through a sorting process to eliminate inferior chips.

Noise and heat can be greatly reduced with higer-end aftermarket coolers and HSF assemblies.

And then there's all the enthusiast bells and whistles like on-the-fly OC'ing buttons on the card, dual BIOS, instant BIOS reset, instant voltage switch, more comprehensive monitoring/benchmarking functionality, etc.

All in all, this should equate to more generous tolerances in heat, clock speeds, voltages and longer lifespans but as you should well know, computing hardware is sometimes a gamble, and someone has to get the duds.

    • -2

      Same shit different smell

  • Probably going cheap because it's not a well-known model, so fewer people looking for one.

I got one cheap second hand (nobody was searching for "7790" on ebay), and checked the other day to see what a ~50% performance upgrade would cost me: not less than $215 (7870).

    Always stay away from MWAVE.

  • I have a Core2Duo with a 7770 currently. It's a legacy computer that's plugged into the tv for when I want some couch gaming. Would a 7790 for $100 be a worthwhile upgrade? The Benchmarks seem quite a bit higher (Av G3D 3078 vs 2153 from videocardbenchmark). I'm not sure if the C2D would be a bottleneck anyway though. (I would like Bioshock which factors into the decision).

    • Depends on which C2D you have. I am currently on a E8400 (OC 3.3Ghz)/4G DDR2-888/HD6870 1G and no bottle neck from the CPU.

    • 7790 really isn't that much different to the 7770. If you want to upgrade better off getting a 7870LE for $225, I don't think anything less would be all that useful to you.

  • my mate is looking for a GPU for his pc , he has plugged in his 60" Samsung LED tv with the cpu. Will it be okay ?
he has some cheap GPU ( 1 GB DDR3 a year old Radeon series, bought for $60 ) in it which sucks at 1080p , you can see very poor quality graphics.

would you recommend this or something else for that screen?

Refresh rate on his LED is 60

    • +1

This is a very good value card, but it might be overkill if he is not using the computer to play games.

What do you mean when you say the graphics don't look good? Is that in games or in video playback quality?

      • nah not for games man , just when you see the desktop you can see the distorted shape of icons.
when you play a movie that looks alright. I am not sure if I should try give it a go with other gpu .

CPU isn't too bad, its a AMD Phenom II (2.8~ 3.00 ghz not Over Clocked) and 8 GB RAM DDR3

        • +2

nah not for games man , just when you see the desktop you can see the distorted shape of icons.

I think the TV is just not configured correctly. He's using HDMI right? Turn off the overscan setting in the TV unit and set the aspect ratio to 'screen fit' or 'just scan'.

More settings can also be found in the AMD CATALYST software (right click desktop -> Catalyst Control -> My Digital Flat Panels sub category — look through the settings for the Scaling options and play around with the slider until you get the right picture.) Might also help that the AMD software is up to date.

If nothing works, then perhaps he just has a very poor quality TV that doesn't do 1:1 pixel mapping. In that case, use another type of cable — DVI, RGB, DSUB and use a 3.5mm audio cable for the sound.

        • Sweet
          thanks for your help
I'll try DVI cable i have one spare see if that works.

its around 2 years old 60hz could be the problem too.

I'll see if that solves the problem

I had to change the aspect ratio to fix because it was then clipping the taskbar and the corners. When we did Fit on program menu of TV that problem got solved.

        • You probably DO want it to clip the edges a bit. my 51" samsung plasma was the same - they "overscan" a bit so you don't see the very edges of the picture. That way you're getting one pixel per pixel, and there's no fuzziness.

    • -1

Sounds like a CPU bottleneck. I would be upgrading the CPU and RAM before investing a high performance video card like this one.

Edit: Even my integrated 4200 on the mobo can play 1080p video so I doubt the video card is the problem.

      • do you have computer screen or the TV attached to it via hdmi ?

      • Any CPU can play 1080 video when the GPU does hardware h264 (which all current GPUs do).

  • Would 2 of these in CF be about the same performance as a 7950?

    • If you want 7950 speeds, buy a 7950.. crossfire has its own set of issues and should really only be used on higher end cards where performance is absolutely critical..

  • Is it sold out?

    • +2

      Yarp.

  • +1

I spent too long decided if it was worth upgrading from my gtx 470!

    • Swap for my GTS 250?

      • How about GT240? lol

  • bummer great price, paid more for a 7770 just a few months ago

  • Hi Guys, noobish with this, is it worth considering & will it work on a;
    Gigabyte GA8I945G
    Thermaltake 430W XP550NP
    Intel pentium 4 3.80GHZ/2M80004A

Trust that's all the info you need. Cheers! in advance ;-)

    • It should work but it's sold out and that CPU would be a pretty big bottleneck in a lot of games.

    • not worth that system

if you're tight on budget, start with a pentium G2020 pc, this system beats the crap out of e8400 so it should handle well on the 7790

i built one for 200+ recently

    • Time to retire that old rig friend. P4's ancient!

      • Yep she's an old girl I've had in storage for a few years after the 6600GT went poof.
Been using a Asus N61J lappy for a few years I had for FiFo but now home fulltime using it plugged into a 32" LG LCD TV (HDMI).
Thinking of giving it to my 12yr old and organise myself a new desktop mainly for browsing and iRacing.
Seen this and thought it might do the job, might of been good enough for iRacing with some other new components.
Thanks for the pentium G2020 pc tip, from that I found this if it helps others http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/intel-pentium-g2020-2-9ghz-4gb…

I'll prob hunt parts/price suggestions etc from WP & staticICE though, no rush.

        Cheers!

        • +2

That Dealsdirect link compouter doesn't look that good. Just go post up on Whirlpool and they should be able to find a better deal.

  • I think I'll stick with my crossfired 6850s for now. Good price though.

    • Yea thinking about a CF 6850, as the individual one has served me soo well !

      • Yer I got the CF 6850's at the start of 2012. Up until now I can play all the latest games with high settings. That said, some games don't like the CF being turned on, which is a bit of a bummer. Most are fine with it though! Its the best value for money considering the performance you get.

    • +1

Because you don't need to be a 'fanboy' to take issue with stupid, needlessly divisive and pointless comments.

  • This brand is very popular in China, similar to sapphire. Very good price!

    • +1

Powercolor has been around in Aussie for years

      • awesome and innovative brand name. colors with power = graphics card :)

  • damn i missed this

  • Looked like a really good deal for an ATI card that match's the performance of the Nvidia 560ti video card but for 100 bucks, sounds like a bargin and it uses less power aswell
    http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7790-vs-GeForce-GTX-560-Ti

The GTX560ti performs better then the GTX 650 which I think was recently around 200-250
