Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Home Cinema / HiFi Headphones. AU$204 Delivered. DWI.

130

One of the top 3 headphones at Headfi. Best set you can buy under $300. Hell JB Hifi sells them for $378.

Use coupon code: RMN2013 for $10 off. Make sure you choose the standard shipping + insurance which adds $3.00 and Paypal adds $4.00 so total is $214.00 - $10 discount coupon = $204.00. Cheapest in the world.

Very neutral set that can also be amped for even more performance. Although it does play well unamped as well. I have bought one for myself and the reason I put this up is, I received my shipment in 4 days (standard shipping to boot). They posted it via DHL Express. Compared to my ATH-AD900X, the HD 598 sound more natural, no peaky trebles, hits sub bass levels more often. Just a more relaxing sound. The bass is more than adequate unless you guys are crazy bass heads, then you will need to buy a closed designed headphone. I am running these from my plasma TV and movies sound amazing as if the sound is coming from speakers around you. On the computer I have them running from a Xonar STX sound card which has a built in headphone amp and I use the +12 gain (medium) setting to get even better quality out of them for my uncompressed music. The comfort level is amazing, very light. I seriously think that to top the sound quality of these headphones by any considerable measure, price has to double.

  • They're ~$201 delivered from Amazon.fr, where I got mine. Great pair of headphones.

  • I've had these headphones for almost 2 years (Paid $300 from PCCG) and have used them with my Asus Xonar Essence STX on my PC also. I use them primarily for gaming and the wide soundstage is amazing in BF3. As dreamscene stated, bass is a little light but this is normal for open headphones (compromise for wide soundstage). Just remember the jack plug is 6.3mm standard, comes with a 3.5mm adapter though. For $204 i'd definitely recommend. Can't comment on DWI though

Don't risk your money with DWI.

There is a shorter cable that ends in a 3.5mm jack.

Careful about calling these "neutral" they're mid-centric with a warm tone, almost veiled if you've been listening to bright sets of cans. Sennheisser's home sound is a love it or hate it thing, I personally love the sound but it be best you try it out yourself before committing.

    • Cannot agree enough with this post.

Do not fall for the badge-marketing; no pair of Sennheiser cans deviate very far from their tinny/mid-centric stance.

If you're a bass-head who needs bowel-shaking sound-pressure levels and plenty of low-frequency oomph, stay well away from Sennheiser in general.

      • Not true. The IE8s and IE80s are a bassheads delight - there is so much thump in those IEMs that I can't listen to them ever since I switched to my Westone 4Rs. Then again, I'm deviating from the subject as we are talking headphones here, not IEMs.

  • Anyone tried the hd598 and akg k701?wonder how the 2 stacks up for classical and rock. Eg elgar's cello concerto and Michael jackson's beat it.

    • Check the HeadFi link in the description, quite a bit of comparison reviews.
