    Decent specs.!

RK3188 has 4 X Cortex A9 cores, so yes it is quadcore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockchip

  • +3

I can confirm that this was recently about $85 at geekbuying (I bought a mk808b from them about 6 weeks ago), so this is a genuine discount!
I wonder if the "aerial" is actually functional. I bought a cheap Chinese Bluetooth dongle back in the day and accidentally broke off the "aerial" to find that it was just a piece of plastic with no connection to the circuit board whatsoever!

Can't comment on the Quad Core, but the Dual Core MK808b has dealt fine with everything I've thrown at it.
Quad Core, realistically is only going to be an advantage if you want to play games with it..

    • I've had the fake Bluetooth aerial too.

You can see that this plastic is a bit transparent and there does appear to be something inside the aerial section.

  • Not bad, two USB ports as well which is good, just need a little micro USB > normal USB adapter. I had a bad experience with my last UG802 with the abysmal WiFi range but going by those reviews it does look promising, might look for a couple more reviews to convince me.

    • +2

On this, I just recently fixed my UG802 and it has insane wifi speeds now. I opened up the casing, the wifi antenna is a wire, so I took it out and its hanging outside now (its behind the TV somewhere so I don't bother with it). Did a speedtest on it and recorded 18 ping, 16mbit down and 1.5mbit up.

Give it a go if you want :) to open the case, use a small screwdriver and there should be about 6-8 clips around the casing, im sure there's videos around!

Anyone know what is the exact difference between CX-9/T428/MK908 models? Thanks.

  • +3

This would be awesome to watch Netflix, download the Hola App, with netflix app.

and your set no need to pay for a VPN.

    • +3

      Exactly what we do.
Use the "Netflix Rotated" apk from xda developers

      • +1

Can u post a link for the Netflix apk?

      • +1

This is probably a dumb question but why do you need the rotation app?

        • Allows you to download netflix app…for android.

        • You don't specifically, but you can't download it from Play Store (even Market Enabler wouldn't allow me).
and the standard Android App only displays the Netflix Homescreen in Portrait mode (not orientation sensitive) and that makes it highly unfriendly to use from the couch.

        • Ahh that makes sense… I did not know about the portrait mode on a tv as I use the app on my tablet which of course rotates as required. Cheers :)

    • How does that work? Surely the Netflix app still looks at your IP address and knows your not in the US? My VPN is soooo sloooowww Netflix is un-watchable, so would love to know how you do it.

      • +1

Hola.org thank me later I can watch super HD no problems at all :)

        • +1

          you are my hero

        • netflix noob here, how do you guys go about paying for netflix? paypal or just the credit card?

        • I'm paying with a Bankwest Credit Card.. Zero International Transaction Fees.
          Netflix accepts Australian Credit Cards

        • You wont be able to pay for netflix with an Australian PayPal account, when purchasing it just use your own debit/credit card, and for the postcode add an Zero in front of your one, you could try mine 03167 - worked.

  • Apart from watching tv shows and movies, what other cool things have they found about having one of these connected to their TV?

Additionally, what about power supply? US site supplying US connector?

    • Mine came with a US connector, but it's 110/240V, so I've just plugged it in with a socket adapter.
If you don't have a socket adapter, you can bend the pins (or rather the plastic around them) to 45 degrees with a pair of pliers.
(not that I'm recommending you do that, but it does work)

      • From the video it's a usb type charger like our phones etc isn't it?

        • +1

Yeah it is, but it comes with a US->USB adapter..
You could use one of your own, but the one that comes in the box is rated 2W which is higher than normal.
I've successfully powered mine from the TV USB Port, but it took a bit too long to boot up after turning on the TV, so now it just runs 24/7 plugged into the wall.

        • Do you mean 2A instead of 2W?
2W@5V is 400mA which is less than what computer USB provides.

        • yeah, 2A
          Good pickup! :-)

    • thanks, updated.

    • That's a great review on the vid, thanks again lachlan

  • I have no idea on the internal techy stuff with these but know it will turn my non smart TV into one + more.

I'm asking you clever techy guys if you can help me out, is this as good a bargain as it gets including the exchange P&H to Perth?

    Ta

Edit: Thanks for the $ part lachlan1

    • Seems to be pretty decent for the spec. I'd recommend it if that's what your after

    • +1

      Reviews seem good.
be aware that you need to add at barest minimum, a USB mouse, to control the device.
I bought an Air Keyboard/Mouse for mine. Looks like a Remote Control with a QWERTY Keyboard and you can wave it around the room and it controls a pointer on screen.

I have the MK808b that is also available on this sale with such a Air-Mouse type remote..
      Nice little device.

      • Thanks scub, would that air one you talking about be better than this one offered in a package?
        http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Brand-New-RC12-Wireless-2-4G-…

Or which are you recommending would be better from here?
        http://www.geekbuying.com/Search/?keyword=Air+Mouse

        Ta

        • Dunno about the RC12.. kinda looks like the mouse is that tiny touchpad which would be frikkin annoying to use on a TV screen!
See my comments about the RC11 in another comment below.
It's pretty fun to use (although can also be annoying if you need to hit something small).
And feels quite natural in the hand.

slightly different model, but I think should work pretty similar.

  • Nice find! Hopefully there is as much community support for this as there is the MK and UG series!

    • +1

Has the community support formed around unlocked bootloaders for this Tronsmart gear? Has anyone put an alternative recovery loader or even better, say an ARM verion of Debian (or other) linux on them?

I couldn't find any Tronsmart statement about support for cummunity developers by keeping the bootloader unlocked or at least a system to unlock it for those who want.

Don't know about anyone else but I won't hand over my cash anymore unless the gear is truly mine after I buy it, including loading whatever OS that pleases. I mean, the biggies like Sony, HTC, Motorola, Asus have all expressed community developer support and unlocked or made unlockable the bootloaders on their newer phones & tablets, mostly because we buyers made a fuss until they did.

  • Sorry, are these other extras a good deal?
Was thinking the Mouse Keyboard Remote thing would be better than just a mouse, especially in bed?
And the Ethernet Network Adapter rather than wireless?

  • Can these things do 1080p ? Specifically, playback of 1080p MKVs ?

    • yep thats what i wanna know!

    • gpu is mali 400, should be able to

  • Could i use my android tablet to control the mouse?

    • For the Rockchip powered devices you can get a free rkremotecontrol app.
      Works OK, but needs WiFi.

      • Perfect Thanks

  • Can these be run headless (vnc) ? OR do they require a physical display?

    • Should run fine with no display… but why?
They don't run Linux as far as I'm aware.

  • Whats the practical difference between something like this and a Pivos Xios or similar?

    • about $80
      :)

      • Hah thanks, but seriously… in terms of functionality, does a mini stick like this not do something that the Xios (or a competitor like the GBox) does?

        • nup, just dangles off the back of the TV
Maybe has fewer USB ports, no dedicated Ethernet port (if the Pivos has one) but software wise, they're functionally identical.

  • +2

Everything looks good except for the 720p Kernel. Would have pulled the trigger if that was a 1080p

  • grabbed it….I wonder how well it will work with XBMC despite being a rockchip CPU…

    • xbmc is brilliant on Dual Core.. Responds faster than my HTPC!

      • Even playing back 1080p MKVs?

    • would like to now about XBMC support too

  • dammit i just bought the MK908 like 2 days ago for more. I hope it will be as good :)

  • Hey can anyone explain this to me please, it has mic and headphone jacks, would this mean I could mute the TV speakers and listen through headset plugged into the remote so it doesn't disturb the mrs at night? Sounds to good to be true

    • +1

That's the way it reads to me as well.
Would only work for media that is played through the Android box of course (ie wouldn't work for TV audio or DVD's)

      • Sorry Scub, doing my head in, wont be using it for games just youtubes, catch up/smart TV etc.
I wouldn't need anymore than duel for that would I, these do 1080 and are $21 cheaper (buying 2 so will save me $42). Any reason for me not to go this way or aware of better option for me?
        Duel 1080 $43.99
        http://www.geekbuying.com/item/1080P-HD-CX-803-Mini-TV-dongl…

        • +1

Dual-core is fine for media playing in my experience.
I chose the MK808b based on good support by developers and good reviews that said it was reliable and the software was stable.
The one you've linked appears to be new, there are no reviews, so in that respect is an unknown.
Maybe cut your losses and order 1 and if it works reliably, buy the second a bit later.
If you're technical, grab the MK808b and flash the 1080p ROM to it.
It's a bit fiddly to do, but doesn't require any particular skills, just follow the guide.

  • Can it play 1080p 10bit mkv? even my core 2 duo u7300 cannot handle it.

    • lol try a AMD-E350 .. that was totally pathetic, i gave up and just use DVD quality/720 at best.. and its running with SSD n good amount of RAM! (not that it matters when the damn cpu is so pathetic) ..lol

i got this seemed to have decent reviews out there .. havent got it yet so i hope its a decent box …

      http://www.geekbuying.com/item/K-R42-Quad-Core-Google-Androi…

Scubacoles seemes to be the Pro so i'd go with whatever he says.. hehe

      • I haven't tried MKV, but from what I've read, yes..

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANf4oCNSxn0

Galaxy S2 with the same GPU

        • i got a galaxy note which is faster than the S2 and cannot handle a 1080P 10bit MKV with mxplayer.

It can play some 1080P MKV, just not a high bitrate one.

let me try diceplayer tonight :)

        • The player needs to have hardware decoding enabled and support for the specific hardware decoder in your device.

      • i have the e350,
you have to allocate more ram to video in the bios as it defaults to only 256mb

  • +1

No 1080P is a deal breaker.

  • It says
    HD video decoder (1080p @ 60fps)
    HD video encoder (1080p @ 30fps)

Is this not 1080P video output?

    • Same issue as with my MK808b.
The stock kernel supports 720p only. I had to flash a custom kernel for true 1080p. Quite a noticeable shrinkage in the size of icons on the desktop after rebooting!

  • That's a good point, nothing mentioned about it on the page, maxhu mentioned 720 above and it took off from there by the looks?

  • Sorry for the noob question, but this is the first time I've seen this type of device. Would anyone recommend this as an upgrade over the WDTV live streaming? I'm assuming it has far mroe functionality, does it host/play metadata video files well?

    • I have a WDTV live box and I have bought a similar Android stick to this bargain. Hoping it will be an upgrade as live streaming on WDTV is a pain. Having said that, speed was my issue which I fixed with one of those ethernet over power ports so depends what you're looking for in terms of upgrade I guess?

FYI I use my desktop PC and Wild Media Server to stream content from my PC to WDTV in another room. I don't think these sticks have any onboard storage, but they might support an external hard drive?

  • +2

It can decode 1080p video but video output is limited by kernel to 720p. At the end of the day you can only see 720p on your tv/monitor.

  • Does anyone know if the antenna turns both ways? By the looks of the video, if it only swung out one direction, then it wouldn't work in my TV, as the antenna would ram into the tv

  • for us non tech savys - what additional equipment will I need to get this thing running here in OZ? Will just getting the stick suffice? Also I actually have no USB output on one of my TVs, anything I can do to still get it to work?

    Thanks guys appreciate it

    • As long as you have HDMI port you can use the stick. Also as mentioned above you will need an adaptor for power supply (US to Australian)and some sort of wireless keyboard or mouse or combination of both which can work either by Bluetooth or wirelessly with USB connection into the stick.

      • thanks a heap churchado. Would there be any distinct advantage in buying smething like the MINIX NEO X5 for the purposes of watching youtube/netflix/hulu and so on?

        thanks again!

        • Not sure, I was wondering the same, see my post below.

    • +1

I'm a noob with this stuff to Jason, but after harassing a couple of blokes in here and considering I'm only using it to turn a tv in into a smart tv, no gaming, I went with this for 1080p and saved $21

      Duel 1080 $43.99
      http://www.geekbuying.com/item/1080P-HD-CX-803-Mini-TV-dongl…

With this remote because you can plug a head set into it to stop the mrs whining
      http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Q7-2-4G-wireless-connection-w…

And one of these so I'm not limited to one USB, can and storage for recording etc
      http://www.geekbuying.com/item/High-speed-7-Ports-Expanded-U…

  • I'm now not sure whether to spend $20 more to get the KR42 box instead…? Anyone think it's worth the extra $20?

  • Hey OzBargainers, I'm thinking of getting the mk809 from aliexpress, but is geekbuying a more trustworthy place to spend my coin?

    • I bought mk809 from aliexpress a while back. The device is working perfectly fine and also few custom roms like finless 1.7 and 1.8 are available for it. The only problem i faced was the shipping time. Took me 45 days to hands on to the device.

  • Will these android sticks handle an external hard drive playing mkv? Also will a single usb port have enough power to run multiple devices via hub?

    • +1

It'll be device dependent, but I've had a USB powered Hard Disk plugged into mine. Powered up fine!
