  • Cool, first time I have seen that one on special.
Hope Coles brings out a $65.00 deal soon.

    • That time will come but probably not until they clear their y201 stock.

      • The Huawei Y201 may have already run out. This week, the Coles/Telstra deal is a Samsung Galaxy Y for $69.

  • does anyone know if you can get it unlocked for cheap somehow?

  • Free delivery from DS for the Frontier.

  • Also $95 from Unique Mobiles with code: Y3ASJL29
    http://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/huawei-ascend-y300-black?
Today Only according to their email.

    • And plus shipping cost. Minimum cost is $13.

True, but at least it will get there. Obviously you haven't been following the recent discussion over the numerous shipping debacles with DSE.

Also the one from Unique Mobiles comes already unlocked, saving a further ~$6 or more. Net cost is $2 more than the DSE one at the very worst.

  • Anyone know how to use Giftcard when buying from dicksmith online. I enter it in promotional voucher field but i get invalid number error.

    • You no longer can redeem gift cards online. Go into a store instead.

      • ok. thanks for info

It came with 4.0 (ICS) when it was first launched with Telstra making claims that they are working with ZTE to bring out JellyBean onto it in the coming months.

However, when I made contacted ZTE regarding the Jellybean situation, it seems like that there is no software upgrade available for this particular handset – which kinda contradicts with Telstra's claim on working closely with ZTE to deliver the Jellybean firmware.

      Hi ??????,

Thank you for contacting ZTE support.

There is no software upgrade for the T81(frontier) handset.

Anyways, if you don't mind paying for an extra $70, you can get Jellybean on the Huawei G526 (4G, better screen, similar specs) via vodafone. Bagman can unlock it just like any other Huawei. But at where it is, the Frontier is a very appealing proposition.

The ZTE T81 (Telstra Frontier) is actually a good phone for $149. Has the same Snapdragon processor as the Lumia 920, but some reviews say its sluggish - not sure whether ZTE cheaped out on the rest of the assembly.

    • An equivalent phone sold in US is the MetroPCS Avid. However, the radio is different and as a result of that you cannot use their ROMs on the Frontier.

  • If anyone knows how well signal retention in rural areas is with with the Huawei (mining areas/camps specifically), then please share what you know :) if you know how it stacks against the signal of iphone 4, 4s and 5 that would be particularly handy.

I've been told by the MIL to "find her a cheap iphone" and that "iphones get reception at my camp".

The budget is around $200 so clearly an iphone isn't going to happen, lol. As long as it performs in the signal department, it's a pretty attractive alternative :)

get her a gooPhone at around $200 - she wont know the difference

      • LOL tempting but I think the plan would come undone pretty quick :p probably wouldn't get very good reception standing 10m from a tower ;p

But yes I am definitely going an order of smartphone>signal>other bells and whistles (appearance etc).
My definition of smartphone in this case being as good or better than her current HTC desire.

        • Second hand mau be a good option for $200.

        • My understanding is that only iphone 4 or newer would be viable. My old 3g had terrible reception, and friends 3gs not much of an improvement. 4, 4s and 5 are blue tick at least.. so should be better.

Even a broken iphone 4 goes for more than $200 on ebay so that pretty much rules that out :p.

Edit: Looking at your comment again I'm not sure how I assumed that you meant iphones… :\ time will tell lol.

    • The Huawei Y300 has the Telstra blue tick, so it is supposed to be OK reception wise.

  • How is this compare to G300? Which one better?

  • Shipping (to Perth at least) is free on the Y300 too.

  • Seem the Y300 without face camera.

  • Anyone knows if the ZTE T81 (Telstra Frontier) can be unlocked? thanks.

    • Bagman seems to be able to do so, you may want to contact him on that.

      • thanks for the info. got one from Officeworks, shell price $199, scanned price $149, no price matching, no further 5% discount.

        • please let us know whether it can be unlocked.

For those wanting to use the external antenna port on the Frontier be aware it needs a T5 patch lead not the standard ZTE TS9.
T5 is what the Telstra MF91 modem uses.
Careful of eBay sellers pedalling the CRC9 as the patch lead for the T81. It is too tight a fit and the ports on these smart phones are fragile to say the least.
