Telstra 3GB Prepaid Micro SIM for iPad $10 at The Good Guys - Instore Only

680

Reading the Good Guys catalogue today, noticed this deal.

Standard offer - 3GB to use in 30 days - Prepaid micro sim for the iPad - $10.

When I checked online - there's no mention of it, even the same catalogue online (winter catalogue) doesn't even show the deal! So I checked with the Good Guys via Facebook - and they confirmed that the deal is on, instore only.

Apologies for the dodgy photo!

  • Thank you!

  • You can also activate these if you want $30 Google Play store credit, just ring up or use the live chat, takes 10 minutes.

    • I assume you need to be a Telstra customer to do this? And have an iPad, not android?

      • +1

Nope - I've done it. See this post by Scaregdearimasu.

    • Same thing for League of legends, change it into 2000RP of credit using phone credit.

I don't play that game, but I am interested to know how that is done?

    • +3

I have been successful when I call a few weeks ago, but not with my most recent online chat.

hi, is it possible to activate a 3GB prepaid microsim for $30 credit instead of data
      JHERLEY
Is it a SIM card together with an iPad device or you purchase the SIM separately?
      Me
      it was purchased separately
      JHERLEY
What's the number allocated on the SIM?
      Me
      0000000000
      JHERLEY
No, it shows here that it's a SIM card with 3 GB and not $30.

Data is not convertible to dollar.

        Update

I tried asking again and was allowed by a different person.

        • was it through online chat or phone support hope chat still works got two more I need to use.

        • +1

          Both conversations were online chat.

        • Excellent
          thanks for the prompt response.

    • If you activate it with $30 Google Play Store credit, do you still get the 3GB of data?

      • not afaik

      • +1

        No lol

  • +2

nice just ran out of sims from the last sale, I'm waiting for ASIO to knock down my door for probable drug dealing, not substantiated of course.

    • I have lost count

  • Does anyone know how long I have until I have to activate the sim card?

    • +1

Says on the back of the pack, mine says dec 2014.

  • so if I buy a bunch of these and activate one, can I then use the rest to recharge?

    • +1

No - each is a starter pack.

    • You have to activate each one. Each sim has a different number.

      • Which is exactly why I wont be bothering any more. Phoning them every month (because online activation never worked for me) is too much of a pain in the ass. Would rather pay an extra $5 and just use Aldi.

        • Not sure how good aldi is, but by buying these for $10 you save almost 67%. Well worth it imo.

        • It's not that hard to set it up on online chat. It takes me 2 minutes and done

        • Aldi uses Telstra's 3G network and considering I have an iPad 3, 4G would be useless.

        • To me I am only saving around $7.50/month if buying the sims at $10. The main benefit is now I get $30/month of apps I previously wouldn't buy, though I am finding it hard to spend $30 now.

    • you're giving free advertisement for scotty the more you type

that's… very nice of you to do things for free

  • Guessing these are fine to use on other devices?

  • if i buy a bunch, can i activate 1 per month?

    • I bought a couple from AusPost and JB when this offer was still active there and remembered activated one after another in 2 weeks and it was fine. They do not care about mobile broadband it's telephone service that they are concern. Some retailers don't even take details like they used to anymore. But GG may not allow you to buy many. Some retailers allow only 2 at a time.
But then you cannot stop customers from snapping a good deal. You cannot deny customers the right to buy more of something because it is a good deal.

  • this offer has been done by AusPost for yonks now and JB did this until end of June so just expired. Target has it a while back at $15 for 3 gigs.

Sorry, can you clarify what the point of you bashing out those words were?

  • Can you set up a ipad (3/4th gen) as a hot spot (like iphone)?

    • -3

      No, you can't.

      • Don't know about the big size iPads but I definitely use my iPad Mini (Cellular) as a hotspot with prepaid telstra sims. It's an option in the settings (fifth option down) and easy to use, simply just a matter of swiping it on and off. I use it for my laptop when I need super speed for a download as my home broadband can be so sloooow.

    • Yes, you can use as hot spot on iPad 4th gen and iPad mini. I have tried it on both of them. Don't know about iPad 3rd gen.

      • +1

I can confirm that personal hotspot works on the 3rd Generation iPad.

  • Could I use this just as data pack on my galaxy note ?

  • There is always noob questions when these sim card deals come on sale. Some one set up a wiki ASAP for this kind of thing

  • How does one use this deal for an Ipad Mini? I need a nano sim?

    • cut it down to size - you'll likely find cutters on ebay if you don't want to risk sissors

    • Telstra shops will usually cut your sim down for free.

    • +1

Many tutorials on YouTube. I've done it numerous times, haven't had a problem yet.

      • I used a pre-dodgy-cut sim from a travel sim site. The thing got stuck in my iPhone. It was only by luck/force it ended up coming out. Don't risk it.

  • Can this be used in a MF60 with the right adapter?

    • Yes

      • How do you do that?

        • Purchase one of the converters above.
Set the sim up as an iPad 3gb sim.
Insert in device with the help of adapter.

        • Telstra will detect the imei is not that of a iPad .

        • Has anyone done this? I can only get 3G/4G in my area and this is a much more convenient way of obtaining internet access.

        • Telstra will detect the imei is not that of a iPad .

they can detect but will they do anything about it? :)

        • "they can detect but will they do anything about it? :)"
Try researching. They switch you back to pay as you go for data, ie. your credit disappears very quickly.

        • So what is the general consensus now?

Just forget about such deals now if one is not using ipad?

        • They don't generally cheat, if they did then there's typically junk lying around like Dodo $5.00 * 2100mhz deal.. + AnDroid Hotspot FTW.

        • +1

On my third one of these SIM cards in my Vodafone Pocket WiFi and works just fine.

Have another 4 in the drawer ready to go over the next 4 months.

  • Sweet, my recent activation just expired a few days ago and I was so close to buying another recharge for a full $30.

  • Does anyone know if JB or someone else price match this?

    • +1

big w always - must have catalogue :)

      • Thanks, got 3 today at BigW for $10.00 each since TGG has NOTHING

  • East Gardens Big W had 4 left yesterday evening but refused to price match TGG and they would not sell for $15 either because the Woolworths catalog lists only the $30 pre-paid starter kits for mobile as discounted to half price. How/can one of those be activated for iPad to receive 3GB? Apologies if this has been asked/answered before (was not clear to me), thanks.
