It was much 'loved' for its price, when HP decided to dump their stock. Won't find quite as much 'lovin' for $269. :)

    • Yes, you can get better hardware specs for the same price by building your own now. Maybe something like this:
      http://www.cplonline.com.au/homepage-system/basic-pc-intel-d…

I got a N36L for $170 two years back during the HP stock dump. Nice box, low power and quiet.

      • If you're purely looking at spec, yes, this is probably the situation. These Microservers are pretty decent build quality though - I've had mine for just short of a year and have been very impressed with the build quality and stability.
It probably warrants some price premium over a generic build your own server.

        • My N36L is still rocking… best ever Ozbargain purchase I've ever done.
Can't recommend these bad boys enough (although under $200 was definitely made it so much sweeter).

There's owners clubs online everywhere… versatile little suckers.
A passive 2Gb video card and this box pumps out full def Bluray's nice and quiet with no stutter and very little power draw.

          Thanks again OzBargain gods.

I was thinking about the G8 server, now that the N40L is getting slow for my purpose. But the cost is too high compared to the performance.

At one stage the N40L's were selling for $199. What happened for the prices to jump so high? It's worse than the Thailand HDD crisis.

I recently built a small pc to act as a server. For $387 total, tell me what you think about the build.

    • i3-3240
    • Asus B75 1155
    • Kingston HyperX 1600 (4GBx2)
    • Silverstone PS08B Micro case
    • Corsair V350W PSU
    • SSD (Donated from old PC)

power consumption? (have you got a power meter?)

      • Yes, I have a power meter. And power cost is the least of my concerns. My running cost from $75 to $150 per year isn't going to hurt much (compared to the amount of added performance I get).

      • -1

dont know why that was negged… its a reasonable question as one of the main advantages of a low power PC is that they do cost less to run, eg id prefer to pay 400 for a server if it uses 100 dollars a year less power than a 300 dollar system and has better performance.

one of the biggest advantages that i like about the HP's is the low power consumption (of about 30 watts at idle)(and at a low cost) and it should do everything i need (file server, torrent, web server, router)

would be interested in building a PC if it were as low power as the HPs and it didnt cost too much more.

or is that just the person that goes though searches my comments and uses all there daily negs and has a vendetta…

I have to take issue with the N40L price. I've bought them as low as $189 in the last 12 months and most of the time they've been in the $209-$239 range. Even with the drop of AU$ it's become high for something that's an old design.

I think I'd consider it if it was $269 with a 8 GB module but would hold off otherwise. I'm alright for now as I have two at the moment.

    • Hi guys,

HP N40Ls are phasing out - and there should not be any replacement (microservers) for that price range once all stock in Australia have dry up - explained before (AUD, Low Stock - triggers the cost increment, no vendor will sell it to us/anyone at those prices anymore).

      Regards
      SE

      • +5

wow cost increment for phase out electronic stocks?

        • unfortunately for this product - it is a yes, and it most likely indicates that HP have no plans to be doing similar prices for the G8s - with the change in some hardware/features.

          Cheers

as much as I love shopppingexpress I have to neg this deal. Considering AUD dropped around 15% from its highest, the fact that this cost 35% more from it's lowest at $199 can't be considered deal anymore.

    • no reasons?

Edit: you added it. Where do you find them cheaper? staticice shows this is the lower price today.

    • The highest the dollar was from memory $1.11. It's lowest in trading was around 89 cents (in recent weeks), I might be wrong but that's a little more than 15%. You also fail to mention that they were moving stock (HP) to make way for the new model.

      • +1

It would be that case (clearing for new model), if HP did actually provided special clearance price for these but it didn't happen.

From what i can see - i believe the raise in price of HP Microservers indicates G8s will probably not be going to those "extreme prices" offered on the N40L/N54Ls. So it is best to consider the existing stock before it totally dries up.

Been trying to put this message to everyone with every related post… but seemed it still have mix understanding in the ozbargain crowd.

        Regards
        SE

    • I don't know what it is about the Microservers deals that make people so unreasonable. I'm sorry, but those prices aren't coming back

      • +2

I don't know what it is about the Microservers deals that make people so unreasonable.

        Their previous price.

but those prices aren't coming back

        As will be their popularity.

  • +7

I have to say at this price this is not a bargain anymore after so many good deals in the past year. And even the price is set to the same $199 or $219 as before, considering two newer generations of the HP micro server were released since then, it would not be as good a bargain as it was one year ago. I am not going to neg this post, but obviously most OZB fellows here got the same point.

    • +2

it is not SE's fault… it is all HP's fault! the new gen8 is not as good for modifying for 6+ HDD in it anymore.

so, back to DIY days again.

  • +1

Does anybody know how much power the Gen8 uses in Idle and with an activate hard drive. I want to leave it on 24/7 and hate noticeable changes in power bills.

    • +1

40-45w to boot up. 38w most of the time, running esxi 5.1

  • Hey ShoppingExpress, pls confirm memory KVR16E11/8I is compatible the G8. Kingston website lists KTH-PL316E/8G as the memory for G8:
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/modelsinfo.…

    • I bought it and it is working on the G8.

  • Faint. I still have not received the right RAM from them for G8. Now there is already another sale. hope Monday I will get it. Rep, is there a special deal for external blue ray writer? Wanna use this as HTPC.

  • OP can you do a deal swapinternal 250 gb with a ssd? pm me a deal please thanks
