Decent deal, but if I had to actually pay for a usenet subscription I'd rather buy the 12 months for $96US - http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/96-yearly.html

Works out to be $8 a month so 50c more but would rather that then keep worrying about what the AU$ is doing.

If I had to pay for usenet I'd be using a service that didn't have an automatic takedown webtool to remove posts without any human interaction.

I already use Astraweb (through Internode) and have a backup account with an EU based provider. I've used 5GB of it in the last year.

Yeah, Astraweb really take down oh so much /sarcasm.

        • @ Porthos,
5Gb in total or just for backup fill?

5GB in backup fill. In total I've downloaded 1.6TB.

This is what I have. I download a fair bit and have only used 700GB of it since April 2012.

can some1 explain what are these Usenets?? are they "legal" way to download all manner of legal content?

      1. Not here
      2. Yes but no

I would do some googling elsewhere, the info is out there. For those who are keen they are a great way to get stuff you are looking for. Astraweb is a well respected provider.

    First rule of Usenet..

    • There are two controversial issues attached to writing about Usenet: 1) the first rule of Usenet is that you don't talk about Usenet, and 2) it's commonly used to download copyrighted material

  • I wonder if it's easier to just use VPN? (as most VPN services are still cheaper than usenet)

I think Usenet has enormous, unused potential, but unfortunately it is on the way out. Niche groups are dead, and there isn't as much popular material being posted, and some material is getting DMCA'ed now within a day of being posted (eg Throne of Games). 12 months from now, I may not be using using Usenet at all. File locker services, in particular 'Uploaded.to', seem to have far more material, though that is even more prone to takedowns.

    • Yeah It used to be great for illicit downloads, but i gave up when i realized any UFC event got taken down immediately and i had to resort to good old torrents… not really worth it anymore.

you're just not using a Dutch usenet provider for backfill and DMCA'd material then :)
