  • pro is better?

Yes! You can do next to nothing on an RT.

      • +2

Apart from use Metro apps and access Office along with saving to cloud systems etc…

I don't know why everyone says you can do nothing on an RT, you can doo all you need for the basic functions of a tablet…

If your after installing apps or something, true it wont do that, but its not designed to,

        • +2

          Haha Metro apps…enough said!

        • +2

he said Metro apps….not retro apps

        • +2

I'm with Brent here people trying to compare this to full fledged windows isn't really a fair comparison.

I have one and for what I use it for basic tablet functions, full office suite, RDP, Network diagnostics and basic client phone support it's brilliant.

Might not have an amazing App store but then again it's a productive app store.

        • I find windows 8 annoying to use on my hybrid laptop. After about a minute of using it as a tablet I find myself having to do something that needs the keyboard. It seems like e.g. windows mail still needs lots of keyboard shortcut to do things that aren't in the metro interface.

The windows 8 app market has nothing but the sound of crickets chirping. I looked for a battery indicator; on the android app market there are dozens that come with cool features. I couldn't find even the most basic battery indicator in windows 8 app store. Irritatingly this wasn't immediately obvious as the store has dozens of battery "apps" that were actually just books on batteries. The strength of windows 8 is all those good ol' windows 8 x86 applications … but Windows RT doesn't support those.

On the other hand like pro, RT does support Office which I guess is good if that is really all you need.

      Yes.

It's Windows 8 vs Windows RT. Only buy this if you can put another OS on it from the list below.

      • Anything except Windows RT
  • Too bad only if you are a student…

  • I think it's been this price for quite a while now,
    unless I'm missing something here..

  • Being an RT kills the deal

  • Retail has been selling it around this point too. JB has it for $383 http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/tablets/mic…

But (sort of) good if you are in the market for one as a student. Think it would be advantageous to wait either for the next gen when it Microsoft stronger foothold in terms of what RT should be, or a further reduction in price (like the prices offered to university institutions - $199 for 32GB Surface RT Tablet). Not sure if it will be offered that low though

  • +3

RT does everything you would need it to do university wise.. And if you just need an andropd tablet to browse the web then it covers that as well…
It is only next to useless if you need to play desktop games or install 3rd party software which makes use of windows 8 OS… Dont rule it out..
Cost/Benefit wise it is now a good price.

    • I would pity any poor CS or Engineering student having to use one of these pieces of junk. It most certainly won't do everything they need.

  • any good well priced windows tablets?

  • +2

This a really good review of the Surface RT imo - it's pretty recent and worth watching… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXe8v7GvVic

    • +1

haha just watched this the other day, I think it's a pretty fair outlook on the whole thing - provides the good (which people usually fail to mention in the device) and the bad stuff

  • Yeahh…. those keyboards are going to blow out your discount and I'm certainly not going to use this thing without one. Windows RT is still gimped, and the Tegra 3 isn't exactly a powerhouse. The current Surface RT already stutters, exactly how long will it stay snappy in the next 12 months? Decent price but pass.

  • Why doesn't MS just give away these turkeys?

  • Donate them to Africa since Billy boy is world greatest philanthropist.

  • M$ written 900 mil for these devices.. and

with the 279 with keyboard and GST education deal a mission impossible for 90% of students and teachers
M$ wont sell much on that front… hence

350 include keyboard is the retail price point of success for RT now! They would have sell a lot more at the current 449 with keyboard at the very beginning.

sooner or later they will have to flock these well build but handicapped tablets off at a 3XX include keyboard price point.

  • I honestly expected a fire sale for these by now. I blame under the dome.

    • i saw that. Those shameless plugs just make me cringe. You seen hawaii five-0? Windows phone and surface must be their primary sponsors. They fully zoom in on the click and everything -.-

  • I think these could have sold better if they didn't overcharge for their keyboards as well. At $100+ each when it costs them less than $20 to make, its a real turn off to see how much price gouging there is. Not to mention that they are late to market against competitors with fully developed app ecosystems. Some goodwill with discounted pricing for their 1st generation of Windows RT tablets would have helped eased them into the market rather than throwing up a price wall, and charging more for keyboards that could have been one of their key differentiators. Larger drives too would have been useful, given the bulky OS size.

    • This is only available to educational institutions.. so unless you are a university :P
(Or can convince your school/uni to buy them).

      • so unless you are a university :P
(Or can convince your school/uni to buy them).

        No hope

I have tried SWSI and two big Uni … they said they cant do it
that's why I said 90% of student / teacher wont be able to get it at all.

perhaps it is possible if you are some head of the private adult training provider or some pre-school manager… so Good luck to Microsoft with this so called Program. I am sure people will buy the 32G with kb for 279+60 AUD shipped direct from M$.

now we wait for fire sale…

    • These are nice tablets, but you can't do much with them except for Office and Internet Explorer. And Windows RT will likely be ditched soon. I think a good price would $99 for a Surface RT and $150 with a keyboard. A bit like the old HP Touchpad.

      • lol i think that's a bit of a stretch. you can barely get crappy 10 inch android tablets for that price (apart from on firesale). And while they're running different OS's I Surface RT still has a lot going for it (productivity, good build quality, good batt life).

I would say ~$300 - $350 for keyboard + Surface RT is reasonable, as long as they boost up the app store.
