Microsoft Surface Pro 64GB $888 w/ 12 Months Bonus Premium Support

90

Noticed the price has dropped recently at the major chains, probably new model coming (guessing). I know there are haters of this product, but let's be honest if this was white and had an Apple logo it would have sold much better. Ok the marketing campaign was pretty bad and the lemmings still don't know what the hell the difference between Windows RT and Windows 8 is but

This is a great product!!!

For students: Only $809.10 (64GB) or $989.10 (128GB) DELIVERED - Expires 30th August 2013

Provided by a third party, at first glance seems meh

  • For the right person it could be a great. For the average consumer looking to have a device which is supported over the long term period with many apps and great usability, it may not be so great.

I'm reasonably confident that Microsoft has lost $1 billion has something to do with the price drop. http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/business-it/microsoft-lost-1-bi…

That major loss contributing to the demise of Balmer http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/23/steve-ballmer-to-retire-as-…

MS Surface was a product blessed by Ballmer's 'kiss of death', I presume.

This has amazing apps and great usability. Chances are you are typing that from a PC. Any program you have installed on it works with this. The Surface Pro has PC internals running a Core i5. Any program you find for Windows will work.

Any program you have installed on it works with this. The Surface Pro has PC internals running a Core i5. Any program you find for Windows will work.

The problem with it though is the battery life, and the pricing.

Sure, 3.5 hours out of a slate that packs a Core i5 is considered OK by most people's books, but when you're talking a tablet that costs nearly a grand with 3.5hrs of run-time isn't going to be a smash hit with the public.

The Touch/Type keyboard accessory too costs a bomb, and that pretty much wipes out the savings that comes with the price-drop.

Szemen you have a point, but in my opinion it is difficult to put forward great usability as a blanket statement. I used the Surface for some time with a variety of applications. They run 'as is' and are not reconfigured for touch based use. Quite a few apps may be used in a Metro environment but overall I'm not sure it is possible to say flat out great usability for the Surface is possible running any application.

My perspective comes from the ability for anyone to use it for each particular purpose with little to no fuss. Especially people with a few years under the belt. Give someone an iPad and wait for them to figure out how to use it. Give someone a Surface and wait for them to figure out how to use it. My opinion, and experience from use and watching other people us the tablets, is that typically the iPad has an advantage.

Just my two cents. I could expand your argument to say that chances are I am typing this argument with my fingers that are on my hands. But that would just be taking it too far.

        • Some of your criticisms (iPad vs Surface Pro) relate more to the Windows 8 touch interface rather than the Surface Pro itself, which is unfair.

Also, the Surface Pro runs full Windows 8. If your program doesnt support touch to the extent you want, then use it like a laptop with the keyboard and trackpad. You can't say you can do the same thing with the iPad since it can't run a full desktop OS and accompanying programs. The iPad is a great tablet but not for productivity (I have used the iPad since version 1) and have accepted its limitations

    • Been seriously looking at this as a portable graphics tablet. Especially since the Cintiq Companion is so expensive!

Don't really need apps for that :)

      • Look at the samsung activ instead with the larger screen. 10" even with hd res is just too small for a graphics tablet. Can't go less than 11.5" in my opinion.

There is no new model coming… MS has dropped Surface from the future roadmap

      source?

    • sauce?

apparently the surface tablet is a flop. most manufacturers have stopped producing them.

    • +5

The Surface RT was written off for $900 million, and most OEM's have stopped producing RT tablets.

      • -2

        thanks for clarifying.

my interesting in anything windows stopped at winxp :)

      • -1

And there is still an RT in the works. So I guess that means pro 2.

    • +3

You are referring to Windows RT devices. This is the Surface Pro running full Windows 8. The only problem with it is the short battery life and cost (they really should include the Type keyboard to be competitive).

I would buy one, if they released a Haswell version with 10 hour battery life. If Apple can do it with MacBook Air, why cant Microsoft?

      • I agree, I'm waiting for the next version, and I'll get one then.

From what I understand the 64GB model is really too small capacity for loading any more than a few apps though. The 128 is nice.

      • I would buy one, if they released a Haswell version with 10 hour battery life. If Apple can do it with MacBook Air, why cant Microsoft?

The Surface Pro was only released earlier this year… give it time. The Surface RT, on the other hand (with the terrible Tegra 3 processor) was released late last year and is more due for an upgrade (if MS is game).

  • Realistically how long can we expect these to drop? Another few hundred? I want one but don't necessary need one. Don't care if it's a flop.

    • I can guarantee you it will either drop in price or receive an updated model with haswell etc and stay the same price.

Which one I'm not sure… I want one as well.

    • Once version 2 comes out the version 1 will drop dramatically in price.

Ebay should be full of them, new and second hand.

Who would want the old one for anywhere near the price of the new one?

  • Version 2 of the Surface Pro …. hopefully … If MS has learnt anything … Should be much better.

It will have Haswell CPU with much better battery life and a bunch of other related and unrelated enhancements, hopefully a "click" dock.

I don't think it is anywhere near cheap enough or good enough to brake e rule of never buying a version 1 product.

Touch keyboard cover price dropping to $79 on August 30th?

    http://www.wpcentral.com/microsoft-lowering-surface-touch-co…

  • It sounded like they have big plans for the accessory spine in the next release. I would say we will see an add on battery pack as well as better docking. The next release (whatever it is) should coincide with Windows 8.1 release date.

There are better w8 tablets out there, Ative pro, transformer book.

Only good thing i see about this is the display port out (granted it actually can output 1440p+ resolution). W8 tabs make insanely good media hubs/nases/download boxes - they only run at 8-12w with the screen off.

No 3G or 4G slot means no buy.
Simple as that why we did not roll out a few dozen of these at work.

    • +1

sorry mate but that is one of the most tech-illiterate statements going round on the internet. Wifi hotspots (phones included) and 4G wifi devices have made your comment redundant a long time ago.

Why would i want this when sony ultra book cost 200 more with haswell lighter much better looking and 128gb ssd? Not to mention 7 hour battery. I think sony ultrabook is the only good one out there considering screen resolution ssd capacity processor size weight and battery life. Wishing it for around 700 mark.

For this PoS i was expecting way more but the under deliver. I will not touch it unless it drops to 400 to 500 mark

    • The Vaio Pro 11 you're talking about is not a tablet. It also doesn't have a Wacom digitizer which makes it useless for annotations or handwritten notes, which the Surface Pro can do.

Some people also prefer the solid construction of the surface pro to the soft, bendy Pro 11.

  • Do any of the major retailers price match the student pricing?

    • I think you could haggle for close to that price, but I doubt they will price match. Plus if you have ING paywave you could probably swipe 1-2 times to get more money off.

      • +1

Just got home from Parramatta jb hi fi with one. They matched it no problems, just looked at my student ID.

Called liverpool jb, they only budged about $5. Blacktown would only do it if I bought something with it.

Picked up $500 jb gift card from Gumtree for $400. Met up with the guy at parra jb. Worked out well for me.
