PS Vita with WIFI and 3G, $199 + Shipping - EB Games Online Only

580

Shipping looks like it is $7.80 to most metro regions. There are probably better deals on the horizon (JB HIFI still haven't lowered their price) but if you are desperate this is pretty darn cheap. Incidentally they also have the WIFI only model for the same price (and pre-owned for a dollar less, lol).

From the description, 3G service only compatible with vodafone network. But still a good price

    • I wouldn't trust it because of this:

Will the device be SIM locked to Vodafone?
No, the PS Vita will not be SIM-locked to Vodafone, however as part of our preferred partnership, the 3G capable model will include a Vodafone SIM so that users can conveniently activate and enjoy social experiences on the go.

      • +1

Hmmm. I'd suggest that this would need to be confirmed through EB Games. Some brave soul might want to waste an hour and call them to be given the wrong information.

Anyhow, what use is the 3G?

Do you need 3G to use the GPS?

The wifi only model is exactly the same but just without 3G?

Bit strange that after more than a year of release people are still confused by this

        • 3G is just for online access on the go. Can play multiplayer if you wish. You most likely have a smart phone so youd use that first as most of the apps (facebook/web browser) are pretty rubbish on the vita.

GPS is only on the 3G model I think.

Pretty much. 3G model has GPS and slightly more ram to allow for the 3g chip (wont be noticeable in the system).

I cant say for certain but they may recommend Voda due to the 3g frequencies it supports (it should support optus or telstra either way anyway) Also think Voda stocked them when they fist came out and slightly subsidised them if you got a data plan so these might be remaining stock form that.

There shouldnt be any confusion. You could get good answers through google. I only have a US wifi model so I dont know the specifics of the 3g version.

        • Thanks.

Yep have a smart phone and don't need to play multiplayer on the go. I think that there's no good reason for me to get the 3G version. I'm half tempted to buy this because it might be the last chance to get a 3G for $199, but then it looks fairly likely that the wifi will be standard priced at $199 - in which case it might be wise to see if there is to be a new model launched.

    • +1

I have 3G Vita and it is network unlocked. My gf successfully used a Telstra SIM in it.

  • -4

i dont understand any gaming less than 4g

can you imagine the lag and dropping in and out of signal

    • +2

I've played soul sacrifice fine with my friend on Telstra 3g.

I would imagine it's annoying in fps games though.

    • It wouldnt make much difference.

After a certain up and down speed gaming is just sensitive to ping. 3g will be fine.

      • +1

But is 3G enough to reach that up and down speed? With Optus it's slow as feck.

        • +1

Optus 3G+ is fine (HSDPA) but then again it depends on congestion.

        • You think 150kb/s (what I get on 2 bar, get over 500kb/s on 4 bars) is too low for gaming? You only need like 20kb/s to play Battlefield 3 on 64 player server so I doubt the PS Vita is gonna be a problem with that. Latency on 3g sucks though, satellite connections always going to be a problem.

        • What phone do you have? Because mine doesn't have bars, and I don't seem to get near 150 kb/s though I never did a speed test on it. The pages do take a lot longer to load than at home.

        • It's likely that your phone suffers from a congested service (too many users on the local towers)

  • A sign of price drop as rumor suggested?

    • Sony announced a price-drop at Gamescom two weeks ago: http://vita.mmgn.com/News/ps-vita-gets-an-australian-price-d…

It came into effect on September 2nd, for both PS Vita hardware and accessories (memory cards). So we'll probably see temporary price-drops below the regular $199 sometime soon, for those that want to wait.

      • The link that you've provided states the below:-

From September 2, the 3G and WiFi enabled Vita will carry a recommended price of $269.95 in Australia

        snd

The 4GB memory card will retail for $19.95; the 8GB for $26.95; the 16GB for $46.95; and the 32GB for $84.95.
The price cut will be effective as of September 2nd.

So $199 is quite a significant drop from $270 rrp.

Also, the official posting doesn't mention a price drop for the wifi only model - which is annoying and confusing. Does anyone know the official rrp for the wifi only model?

I'm confused as to why you say we'll see the wifi only listed for less than $199?

        • +3

Because it has been $199 on a number of different occasions when the rrp was over $350

        • Yeah but it wasn't selling then.

It may not be selling any more now.

  • +4

Tempting price, but i'm still swaying towards the 3DS XL. That game library…

    • +4

I now have both and I think at the moment it really comes down to when you were born. Both handhelds have a decent library, but the strength comes in what they offer from previous generations. The Nintendo e-shop , While good, is expensive and limited. However some of the limited options are awesome.

The PSN store however is pretty damn big, and if you grew up with a PS1 then you could spend years on the Vita replaying old classics.

The Vita games are also much better looking, and while I love the 3D on the 3DS, it's just as easy to play without it, it adds little.

      Other points to note however:
3DS XL battery life is better than the Vita (of course this depends on settings like wireless, brightness and 3D)

3DS uses SD cards which are cheap and easy to acquire, Vita uses (reasonably) expensive proprietary cards.

I'll stop rambling, I'm probably not telling anyone anything new, but if you love old PS1 games and like the look of the current line-up, not to mention things like the FFX remaster soon, then the Vita is awesome.

      • Both have their pros. I in general prefer the nintendo line up, but i also play a lot of games on the PC/PS3 that are offered on the Vita too.

This is a really good price though. I don't think i'd really use the 3D function on the Nintendo much, and i probably would have considered the 2DS if the screen wasn't smaller than the XL.

When i have some time i will be setting up my nintendo 64 and reliving the 90's!

      • I want Mario, so which one do I choose?

        • Mario line up = Nintendo

        • +2

          ur not serious r u?

        • +2

he has a pony avatar, obvious troll

      • How does a PS1 game look blown up to the Vita's screen res?

        • Better than you'd expect, and certainly no worse than it looks on the consoles on today's screens.

    • I've got both but for me personally I find it much easier to find Vita games I like than 3DS. I have 4 Vita games that I haven't even got a chance to play yet :(

  • If they offer pick up….I am going to impulse buy! :|

    • +5

Final fantasy X is coming to the PS vita. That itself makes worth it already to me. Will be magical.

      • +1

        Woah that's awesome.

Though I've started FFX about 4 times and never finished it.

        • I've done that twice, decided to finish x and x-2 about 2 years ago.

    • +1

3ds has no games? Now that's something you don't hear everyday.

    • +4

I'm sure both Vita and 3DS are disappointments to you compare to PSP that you can CFW for piracy and DS where you can get R4 cards.

Come on just because you can't do piracy doesn't mean its bad. I'm sure you hate PS3 as well since you can't hack it anymore and your favourite current gen console will be a hacked Xbox.

      Get a job

      • +1

my ps3 is still running CFW … i have 2 little kids who like to scratch the heck out of dvds or anything that resembles it :) so playing off the HDD is a big advantage for me .. but all my games are paid for … Last Of Us was worth every cent …

    • Comparing a newish consoles games library to one that has already been established and finished is a little unfair. Give them both 3 more years before passing full judgement.
You must remember that the PS3 had no games for the longest while and now has more exclusives than the 360.

heard not far back of a rumor ps4 bundled with the vita for $500.00 USD i presume.

    • yeah, definitely go for that one

    • i can see that happening… either that or a killer game that will push the stuff out the door.

  • Seems like a good prive for those with PSN Plus and availability to free games every month. I just signed up recently with the extra 30 days and have kept purchasing the Vita games just incase… but the hidden expenses of the Vita aren't all that clear to me.

From my understanding, you need to pick up proprietary memory cards which are overpriced to download games… and that's where these things start to become poor value. Is that right? No cheaper alternatives for storage?

    • +1

      Yep that's basically right.

It was considered expensive due to price of Vita + price of memory cards.

Having said that, the price of the Vita has dropped and so has the price of memory cards. Memory cards aren't super cheap, and there aren't any non-proprietary alternatives, but the costs aren't too prohibitive.

I think it's fair to say that the memory card prices seem to be pretty fixed and will likely stay the same for the next year or more (?), although there are a couple of 8gb cards with free games on it.

With free PSN+ games it's now a very good deal.

  • +3

Yeah if the memory card weren't such a rip off, I would own a vita now.

  • Good price.
You may want to get the memory card from ebgames as well.
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/115239

Or if you buy physical then could get the mega pack which has 8gb memory card and a code for a few games for download.

Holy crap so cheap, i paid 350 for mine about a year ago. Its good but i havent nearly gotten as much enjoyment out of it as i did with the original psp.

  • +1

If you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber the Vita games available at the moment are:

    Urban Trial Freestyle
    New Little King Story
Stealth Inc. A clone in the Dark
    Uncharted Golden Abyss
    Gravity Rush

Even if you aren't a PS+ subscriber but you do buy a Vita, you'd be better off signing up to PS+ to get your games. It would work out cheaper than buying them individually. Just something to consider :)

    • Those are some pretty good games. Is that for the AU store only, or worldwide?

      • That's AU/EU only. As a rule the AU/EU Plus content is better than US but the US has cheaper prices. If you are gonna buy physical releases I suggest AU account, buy the games from UK (or US if you don't plan on getting DLC) online stores and take advantage of the excellent Plus content.
Then again you probably won't buy one as you reckon the Vita is dead, right?

        • I do think it's dead (I don't know any serious gaming journalist or publication that believes this thing has a bright future ahead of it, its sales have been dismal), but if there's a fire sale on, I'll buy one anyway. There are a couple of games I'd like to play on it, Uncharted and Persona 4.

I'll even buy a Wii U which I also think is dead, if it sells for $200. DSE might do some crazy deal on it.

You have to remember that in the case of the Vita, a good price on the unit alone is not enough to sway a doubter. You also have to pay for an overpriced memory card, adjusting its real price upwards significantly. The price I'm willing to jump in at is not a price Sony is willing to let it go for, but I'm in no hurry. Sony's hand will be forced eventually. The market will decide. I don't think the recently announced cuts ($50 off Vita and a small amount off the mem cards) is enough to make a difference. The 3DS cut $80 before it took off. It needs to match the 3DS price and get some more games before sales pick up.

If they do a Vita Mini with an SD card slot on the other hand… (And yes I know you believe the current size of the Vita is perfect, but offering a second SKU does not take away the option to buy the existing one for those who already think it's just the right size, it would only expand the market).

RE: PSN+, all my PS3 downloads were off the US PSN so if I get Plus it will likely be through the US. I prefer cheaper prices over free stuff, because the free stuff is deactivated when your subscription lapses but discounted purchases remain active forever.

I suppose also the freebies must be DRM'd and can't be played offline, if they can be disabled when your subscription is canceled. In general I hate DRM.

        • +1

Yes, must be dead. That'll be why Killzone Mercenary and the Walking Dead just released today, they always do that with dead consoles don't they?
It also has 62 games rated 75+ on Metacritic and has a pile of content coming this year and a little thing called PS4 that you might have heard of? :P The vita is far from dead.

  • I'm not interested in the 3G, anyone heard of a deal on the Wifi only version? Tempted to go to JB or HN and ask for the deal on the Wifi…

    • No difference between Wifi and 3G versions, just think of 3G as extra 5 grams of hardware you have to carry.

      • Yeah, then I'd rather pay $40 less and not have to carry these 5 grams

        • It'll help with those muscles.

        • How are you gonna buy a WiFi only model for $159 though?

        • If the 3G can be had for $199, makes sense that wifi will be at much less soon??

        • +2

That makes no sense. This is a sale, not a price cut.

        • No, this is a price cut that has seen the 3G model discounted even heavier than the standard WiFi model as the 3G model is being discontinued. It's basically a clearance on the more expensive model, you will not see WiFi models $40 cheaper than this (even $10 cheaper I'd wager)

  • It you cant decide from a ds or psp, then go for both, problem solved!!!

  • Got an email from EB today with the same price $199 for 3G console but it was a coupon that could be used in store for pick up since id pre ordered a PS4.

Bought a Vita Monday for $269 with Jak Trilogy.
Took it back in today with the coupon and they refunded the difference and I handed in Jaks (which is free on ps+ anyway atm).
Bought Killzone instead after price matching Big W $48.

All up $247 with killzone. Grest deal.

    • Was it a one use coupon? If not, is there any chance you could please email it through to me?

  • +1

Very unlikely EB will match this price in store without that voucher matster mentioned.

Such an awkward irritating company to deal with, glad they did not let me pick up a Vita in store for $199 because now I can send my business to a store more deserving.

  • Did anyone try to get it in-store at this price?

  • There is a rumour going around about a new PS Vita model on the horizon.

Might explain the reasoning for the price drop.

    http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/499763/20130818/sony-plays…

And btw. Dick Smith is offering PS Vita 3G/Wifi + Killzone Mercenary for $258 inc delivery.

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/playstation-vita/ps-vita-3g-wifi…

    • I really want to know if there's going to be a new model. My guess is there will be. Even if it's Vita XL. Even if it has a higher price tag the Vita current should settle at $199 for wifi.

  • Thumbs up if you got a email this morning with a voucher for ps vita to make it $199 in store for pre ordering PS4

    • I never got that email, I have had mine paid off since the day they first started taking preorders. On the other hand I have two Vitas already so no biggy, lol.

      • So… I am accepting Christmas gifts already. Want me to mail you my address? :)

        • Yeah, I'll need your license no. your Medicare no. and date of birth as well. Couriers are very efficient around my way ;)

      • what paid it off completely?
        hmm i only have $80 on mine… :D

        • Yeah, I traded a 250gb Xbox slim and a pile of games (bought everything in DSE clearance) and there was the extra trade in deal, I think I got something like 60% extra? I ended up with $650 credit so paid off console, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Infamous: Second Son. I've paid off The Order: 1866 as well now. Every time I finish off a game from my wall of shame I trade it in.

        • nice, ready for next gen…

        • Yep totally. Drive Club (PS Plus edition) is also gonna be a day one, The Order and Infamous are releasing early next year so I'll be set for a while.

        • Will you be buying an Xbox One?

        • Me? Hell no. PS4, Steam and possibly WiiU later but no Xbone for me.

    • +1

Do we thumbs down if we didn't get one?

    • Was it a one use voucher? If not, is there any chance you could please email it through to me? I'm hoping to buy one with some EB gift cards but couldn't use them online.
