  • Goes without saying that red goes faster.

    • Probably just as noisy as the Black drives.

No, they're a lot quieter, but not as quiet as the green drives…

Well the REDS are specc'ed to run 24/7 (longer MTBF) and the firmware is better optimised for RAID configs. That's why it has 3 year warranty instead of the usual 2yrs and is also a little more expensive. It's a good investment over a green if you're building a NAS or file server, but it's not something you'd get for a regular desktop.
        It's not that fast…

WD also discourages people using Blacks in a RAID setup.

The Blacks run really hot too…

        • I've had several Black drives, and all of them run at very normal temps.

    $249 from ple.

    not worth of $15 savings.

    • Ahh but +$13.44 shipping.

I agree that there isn't much in it but I am using it as a test run.

Infact if you can claim the GST back you are much better off getting the local stock at ~$249 inc GST

    • Exactly right. If it was say $50 or so cheaper it'd be a good buy, but for $15 I really don't see the point.

Chrhodes - there's plenty of stores all around the country selling it for close to that price, so most wouldn't have to pay for postage http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Western+digital…

hay cheap is cheap. I don't get chance to get out and visit a store so have to pay the additional postage (average $10).

        • So because it's cheap for you it's therefore a bargain? Even adding in postage for the PLE price, you're saving ~$25, so about 10%.

So not a bargain, especially with hard drives.

        • local warranty & supporting Australian jobs too

          keeping the money in Australia

  • I ordered a few items so the savings was more and i didn't suffer from the "Shipping Shock" that you sometimes get from US stores

  • If one did buy a WD hard drive from Amazon, what about warranty in Aus? Are there any caveats?

    • You'd need to send it back to Amazon…
