GarageBand turns your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch into a collection of Touch Instruments and a full-featured recording studio — so you can make music anywhere you go. Use Multi-Touch gestures to play a piano, organ, guitar, and drums. They sound and play like their counterparts, but let you do things you could never do on a real instrument. Enjoy Smart Instruments that make you sound like a pro — even if you’ve never played a note before. Plug an electric guitar into your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and play through classic amps and stompbox effects.* Use a Touch Instrument, a built-in microphone, or a guitar and instantly record a performance. GarageBand now takes song creation to the next level with support for up to 32 tracks.** Get even more sounds for GarageBand with a one-time in-app purchase or record popular third-party music apps using Inter-App Audio in iOS 7. And share your song using email, Facebook, YouTube, SoundCloud, or AirDrop for iOS.

Play your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch like a musical instrument

  • Play musical instruments on the innovative Multi-Touch keyboard
  • Tap out beats with an acoustic and electronic drum kit
  • Record your voice using the built-in microphone and apply fun sound effects
  • Recreate legendary guitar rigs with 9 amps and 10 stompbox effects*
  • Use the Sampler to create an instrument from sounds you record, then play them on a keyboard*
  • Record compatible third-party music apps right into GarageBand using Inter-App Audio in iOS 7

Sound like a virtuoso with Smart Instruments

  • Conduct an entire string orchestra with just one finger using Smart Strings*
  • Tap chords to instantly create keyboard grooves with the Smart Keyboard*
  • Strum chords on an acoustic and electric Smart Guitar, trigger fingerpicking patterns for popular chords, or switch to Notes view to try your hand at the real thing
  • Groove with a variety of Smart Basses using upright, electric, and synth sounds*
  • Drag drum instruments onto a grid to create your own beats with Smart Drums*

Start a Jam Session with your friends

  • Use your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to play or record live over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth with up to three of your friends
  • Tempo, key, time signature, and chords automatically sync to the bandleader
  • Jam with any Touch Instrument or live instruments like electric guitar or voice
  • The bandleader automatically collects everyone's recordings so they can be mixed as a song and shared

Create a song anywhere you go

  • Arrange and mix your song with up to 32 tracks** using Touch Instruments, audio recordings, and loops
  • Use the Note Editor to adjust or fine-tune any Touch Instrument recording
  • Trim and place musical regions exactly where you want them to play
  • Use the Mixer to fine-tune each track’s volume —solo or mute any track or adjust pan, reverb, and echo
  • Choose from over 250 professionally prerecorded loops as a backing band to your song

Share your songs

  • Keep your GarageBand songs up to date across all your iOS devices with iCloud
  • Create custom ringtones and alerts for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch
  • Share your songs directly to Facebook, YouTube, and SoundCloud
  • Email songs right from GarageBand
  • Export your song and add it to the iTunes library on your Mac or PC

Wow, I can just imagine what this would look like.. An Ozbargain garage band on a budget.

now permanently free - or rather, freemium with iap :)

    • So is it a lite version with fewer instruments and sounds, or the previous paid for version now free with extra DLC available to buy?

      • +2

Not sure, but I did read this on MacRumors:

GarageBand will, however, include in-app purchase content from Apple, with additional instruments and sounds available for a fee. Licensing fees associated with some of those sounds had been the presumed reason why GarageBand was left out the original move to make Apple's iLife and iWork apps for iOS free of charge, and it appears that the company has settled on in-app purchases as a way around this issue, offering basic functionality for free and then premium content through the paid upgrade options.
GarageBand is free on the App Store for all iOS 7 compatible devices; additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available with an in-app purchase. iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 7 compatible devices activated on or after September 1, 2013.

Thought that might help clarify the "why"

  • I can't find this app on my iphone app store.

    • found it now

When is it out on Android?!

    (/joke)

      When Halo comes to PlayStation.

    • when Apple buys Google. ;)

  • It is a 582 mb download, need more space to install than that.

Damn. Bought this a year ago for $5.49 (stupid I know), used it one time while drunk and then never touched it again. Now its free T_T.

      Bet you sounded good though

As this is only available on iOS 7, and has a "full version" unlock in the most latest version, you can download the old paid version if you've got iOS 6 or below by trying to "download" it. It'll tell you that the current version doesn't support your iOS, and will prompt you do download a past version. This past version has a ton of features.

tl;dr: if you ain't on iOS 7, dis gon be gud. if you are, you're getting a lite version

I hate apps forcing you to use iOS7

I don't want to upgrade but if all the apps make you upgrade what can I do? Nothing but surrender

    • -1

Or, they are working hard to win you over to iOS 7.

    • Don't you get a prompt to get the last compatible version if your current firmware doesn't support it?

      • Thanks for this hint. Saved my life.

However, it seemingly only works if you install from the device and not from a computer and iTunes. :)

        Thanks again.

      • Didn't get a prompt bit sure what you guys mean. Prompts me to upgrade to ios 7

  • App was previously $5.49… now $0
In App purchase was previously $0…. now $5.49 (for complete collection of instruments)…

    Smells funny?

    Simply iOS7 bait.

They must be hurting. iOS 7 on version 7.03 already and production halved of the coloured 5C.

I certainly wouldn't update to iOS7 at present.

    • Except they've made all their software free – desktop included.

      • -1

        So it would seem.

        It's an interesting move.

Consider this. You can't complain to consumer affairs that your Apple software isn't performing as promised when it's free. No monetary contract saves Apple a whole of hassle and means they don't have to provide refunds through iTunes.

Does this 'free' includes Final Cut X?

EDIT: Just checked, only a few Apple software items are free. The applications aligned to the new OSs. It's very much a 'pull through' campaign at the moment.

  • Thanks OP. Appreciate this!

From Last Week a number of Apple products has gone FREE
The latest OSX Maverick for your apple computers normally $30 is FREE
iWork's office package for the Apple computers is FREE
the Updates if iMovie and iPhoto is FREE
and same mentioned the apps on the IOS devices are FREE

  • How do you guys install or even purchase this when your device is on iOS6? I don't wnat to upgrade but I want to get this for free, then will decide whether I upgrade to iOS7 later?

    Please advise?
