  • Didn't know Chromecast existed before now. I want!

I think that's the reaction ("I want!") most people have when they hear about the Chromecast for the first time. Until they hear about its limitations (particularly when using one in Australia), at least — I'll probably wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation, myself. :)

I was just about to confirm my order after reading this. Will there be issues with using Netflix and other services that utilise a VPN?

        • Last I checked (I haven't looked into the Chromecast for months, so I might be out of date), Google's DNS servers were hardcoded into the Chromecast, meaning you'll need to fiddle with iptables on your router for Netflix to work.

        • If your router supports one to one NAT it's quite easy and can be done via the GUI. My billion router has this and it took all of 2 mins.

        • Unfortunately I'm using the stock modem provided by telstra. I've tried adding a custom VPN over it but doesn't allow.

Netflix can be done. Do some research before you use it for the first time. The first thing it will do when you connect it to your network is want to update its software. The old firmware has been rooted by some folk on the Internet and they have modified these devices to run some custom code. You can't root it if you have upgraded though.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, they are HARD CODED to use Google's DNS. That means you can't assign a DNS via DHCP to get around the usual Netflix blocks. You will need to know how to route it out of your network through something like iptables. Your local Linux nerd mate will probably be able to help you on this front.

Source: I own one of these, and updated it before doing my research. I wish I hadn't.

So I'm going to Black Friday sales…how many should I pick up?
    $29.99US there….

    • Just one for me, thanks ;)

      • I will happily take one for even $40 :D
Seriously interested if there is a group deal for getting from Amazon US or elsewhere :D
        I am from Melbourne btw.

        • So am I. Ill be keen for one :)

  • A pretty good first post, although it could have been improved by giving a bit more information about what the chromecast is - perhaps a paragraph from the marketing blurb, even a copy/paste of the Fishpond text would do.

Fortunately, those who want this device already know what it is. Just the name is enough description for them.

Using coupon "ELECTRON44" should give an extra $10 off.

I can't test it, as I already used the code on my account last week, but hopefully it will work for some of you…

    • Thanks OP.Just got one.
The coupon works and price come down to $39.97 and $40.16(Paypal).

    • Thanks for the code. Brings it down to below $40

    • Thanks Code worked for me, worth trying for $40.00

    • Just change the email address you use to check out & you'll be able to re-use the same 'single use' code. Same address, same payment details, the only thing you need to change is the email addr.

ive got one from previous deal, besides from netflix not working. its a great piece of tech. however depends on how u value youtube. it really doesnt do anything much beside streaming youtube. takes about 15 mins to set up if your router has the right config, otherwise 30 mins. Hopes this help

      and iview etc

    • Can it not stream video off the hardrive of a networked computer ?
      The Amazon FAQ says:
"Can I stream photos and videos stored on my computer to my TV?
You can stream content that is shown within Chrome"

I guess chrome essentially working as a media player is the limitation ?

      • +1

        What they mean is:
"There is an extension for Chrome that mirrors the current web browser window onto your Chromecast. If you look at photos on your browser, they stream to your Chromecast also."

It has no local storage, and no file browser at the moment.

      • You are able to play mp4, m4v, avi and mpeg videos on chrome. All you have to do is drag and drop your file into the browser or you can go to File>Open File. Once you've done that, you will be able to stream to your TV using the Chrome Google Cast extension.

Cheap but I'll pass until it has some useful feature that the WDTV in my room can't already do.

  • Grabbed one. Thanks!

Great for me because my old Samsung TV doesn't support DLNA but now with this hopefully I can use streaming off my phone/tablet!

    • +1

From what I've read streaming is fine from play music/video but poor from DLNA services such as Plex. Official Plex is coming but has no release date set. I hate to be one of those people but I'm gonna wait on a second generation device in this case.

      • Thanks for the info. Will be interesting to know if it's a software or hardware issue causing it, 'coz if software obviously it can be fixed with firmware update. Can't imagine how it would be a hardware issue too, so I'm relatively sanguine on this.

      • The only trouble I've had with plex/DLNA combo is when there are too many videos in one folder. This means when I try to open a folder on my PS3 that is DLNA, something goes wrong and it times out. If I try to open a folder with much less in it, it usually works after 1-5 seconds.

        • Really? I've got many series of TV shows with 20-30 1gb .mkv files in them. I don't use it with the PS3 though as it's a bit crap as a DLNA client.

  • I have long HDMI cable contacted to my laptop and using Xbox for YouTube but I really like the chromcast ummm please be out of stock so I don't have to buy it

  • doh sold out.

    These things are pretty good.
I have had one since release a few months ago.

Netflix works fine if you know how to setup DNS redirection.
As someone mentioned, the Chromecast is hard coded to googles DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). For us in OZ to get Netflix working, we need to go through a proxy service (unblock.us for example). These services get you to use a third party DNS server so they can redirect netflix and other domain names to an AWS proxy service. If you are frequently known to wear tin foil as a hat than this is a big concern for you as you are just trusting these services are only redirecting the things they say.

I mainly use mine for Tab casting. So I bring up something on my PC and stream it to the TV.
For me this works very well despite reports that it doesn't.
I cast NFL gamepass and have also cast some other services like justin.tv with near perfect video and audio.
My setup however is Telstra 100MB cable and I stream from a machine attached with gigabit LAN back to a router that is sitting about 30cm from the ChromeCast device. I am guessing those complaining about tab cast are probably trying to stream from wireless attached devices.

For a $35 device. These things are a great option and complement things like WD TV devices that don't have support for things like GamePass etc.

  • Amazon won't ship to Australia. :(

We cannot guarantee that will be able to get this item, but we will continue trying to source from other suppliers."
