  • they must have seen the bigw catalogue and didn't want to price match http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/124441

    • i received both catalogues at the same time

      • -5

I had a pet dog called Max. Whats your point?

        • +6

Mine's called Brutus. Yay +1 for Brutus

        • +7

the point is OW cant have seen bigw's catalogue and have it printed and delivered at the same time.
i thought your mum's name was maxine?

        • -1

maybe they employed some ex asio staff and bugged a phone or two….

  • +1

Not sure why this one hadn't made it to the OZB front page already instead of the BigW one?

    • +1

One hour head start for the Big W one

  • seems to be more technically superior to a Nikon D90. correct? thoughts?

    • Not sure about stills. But for video you'd definitely want the 600D.

  • lol wats going on

  • +2

This + Magic Lantern = the most versatile camera you can buy at this price range. I'd buy a second one if I had the money

    • +1 Magic Lantern. Best thing i ever did to my DSLR and ive been running it for years.

  • -2

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but aren't some of these cheaper - http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=canon+600D+slr&…

    • I believe most of those (and i only had a quick look) are Body only so no Lens, for me that would be great cuz i have a few lenses but if you have nothing this deal is better :)

    • They're body only jubbing.
This deal is with 1 lens and an 8GB card.

        • eglobal is not aussie stock if memory serves me correct… Big W and OW is. Aussie stock = Aussie warranty = winning! lol… seriously though, i wouldn't mind paying a little extra for local warranty.

Wonder if you can get OW to price match Big W for an additional boost in savings… $494 with 5% d/c = $469

        • I added to cart to see how much shipping would be:

          $69 - $89 depending on options.

  • So is this the exact same model as Big W's 600D posted here?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/124441

    Same lens as well?

    • Yup…looks like the EFS 18-55 on both

  • Hey guys, just looking for some advice please..

I am going to buy my partner a digital SLR camera for Christmas and wondering what would be best for her?

She has not owned an SLR before but takes great photos on her digital camera of scenery and nature and wants to take up photography as a hobby..

I have had a bit of a look online and seem to have come up with Nikon D3200 vs Canon 600D

What would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance for any suggestions =)

    • Either. People have personal preferences for Nikon/Canon. But once you start buying lenses, you're pretty much locked in to that ecosystem

      • You can use Nikon glass on Canon bodies (with full features - autofocus, IS etc) using an adapter.

Doesn't work the other way around though.

Junkee: go the cheaper option, whatever it may be.

    • I was in the lookout for an entry level dslr myself and narrowed it down to the Nikon D3200 vs Canon 600D as well.

Being a bit of a noob I asked a few ppl for advise, googled some info - and it came down to if I wanted the flip out screen (600D) or better image quality (D3200).
      http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-600d-vs-Nikon-D3200

Ended up getting the D3200 - bought the single lens kit today from JB for $498 (price matched this http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/123630).

However whichever you choose, I don't think you will be disappointed.

I was on the same boat with the exact same cameras. After reading some threads from whirlpool I found out that Pentax K30 is the best bang for the buck at that time. The best part is you can use 30, 40 years old Pentax lenses in the camera.

      Reasons I went with Pentax
Cheap lenses (Brand new lenses are not really cheap however the old ones are)
      Water Resistant
      100% coverage pentaprism viewfinder
      more cross-type focus points
Can use AA batteries with $3 adapter
Two control dials instead of one
      and many more

      Cons
No external mic port so not good for videos
      No swivel screen

      http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D3200-vs-Pentax-K-30

In between D3200 and Canon 600D, I dont think your partner is going to see much different

Don't look at anything that hasn't got a vari-angle screen - so look at D5100 or 600D or later models of these two. As far as image quality goes there is no noticable difference to the naked eye at regular enlargement size - say 8x10, and any comparision will be subject to the lens on the front of the camera. You won't beat these two for value for money.

      • +2

I have an addendum: the vari-angle screen is pointless when you have an optical viewfinder. Don't waste the money on it.

        • -1

Ouch, now there's a comment from a guy that is pissed because he got a camera without a vari-angle screen. I mean, really? Pointless??? Surely you are joking or a fool.
          Benefits of a vari-angle screen…

Lets start with photography. Like macro photography? Let's see who can set up a shot fastest - the person looking through their optical viewfinder or the person with the vari-angle screen. With a vari-angle screen you get through the work faster because your setup time is less. And of course, with a vari-angle, you will be taking photos in tight places where the others will just give-up and walk away. This is actually the single biggest reason that I walked away from Pentax after 35 years - they don't do vari-angle! But I still use all my pentax lens on the GH2, G6 and NEX 3N ;)

Now lets look at video. Want to get that great over-the-crowd view on a bright day? With the vari-angle you can because you can angle the LCD down which shades it from the sun. Ever wondered why videographers using the Canon 5d Mark ii use an external monitor? Well one of, the many, reasons is that they can view the image with out having to be bent over trying to look at the fixed LCD for long periods. Of course they cannot be looking in the optical viewfinder because the mirror is flipped up for video. And again, set-up time is reduced. Fun time is increased!

And finally what about evf vs optical? Whilst looking through an optical viewfinder is pleasing to the eye (gotta luv that pentaprism even if it costs more) it does not actually make you a better photographer or in anyway take better photos. The advantage of an evf is two fold. One, it will continue to show an image even if the mirror is flipped up, say in bulb mode. Two, the digital sensor in the camera (which the evf takes a feed from) is so sensative that it can pick up light better that the human eye. This really comes into its own around dusk when you can see your subject better through the camera than with your eye. I have no doubt that in the future, night-vision will be a feature on consumer DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

So … the more you look at it, the more you realise that optical is becoming pointless. Yes a viewfinder is a very important back-up to the LCD, but if it is going to blank out when the mirror flips up for video then you will soon understand what is really pointless. And if you are having to rely on your lcd because your useless optical viewfinder is blanked out, then you may as well be smart and try get a camera with a vari-angle screen.

Ouch, now there's a comment from a guy that is pissed because he got a camera without a vari-angle screen. I mean, really? Pointless??? Surely you are joking or a fool.

          I actually laughed out loud.

Listen - each to their own; I'm a professional photographer. I don't use the screen; That's it really. I compose a shot in my viewfinder for a number of reasons - chiefly I can frame it up so much better, other reasons such as sun glare, screen lag, unprofessional look all come into play, but basically, it's less shit between myself and my subject.

As for a camera for videos…I am not a videographer, but I would use a purpose built video camera, not a stills camera with a video option. As such, I'm looking forward to when I can save some money up for the Nikon DF.

EVFs are getting better - they're almost as good as optical viewfinders.

An example of a great one which isn't quite there yet would be the one on the Sony A7R - it's so nearly there, but the lag just puts me off.

  • Would you buy this over that Sony NEX 6 deal? Price diff or not…?

    • +1

      Different cameras for different purposes.

I recently got a mirror-less camera, actually. I am very impressed with the results to tell the truth, but I will always prefer t use a DSLR.

If you want to just have a camera to chuck in your bag when you go to parties or family events, which also gives you the option of manual controls, go a mirror-less with a decent flash. You want to step it up a bit go DSLR.

      • I have an addendum: the DSLR sucks - pointless to carry around such an overweight hunk, don't waste the money on it. Go mirrorless like a Panasonic G6, or step up and get a GH3 - get great photos AND great video, full manual control and wifi and more, more, more.

In regard to NEX 6, I also have an NEX 3N and whilst it has become my first-grab camera during the day, it unfortunately has poor low light performance at night, so just be careful to test the NEX 6N first and return it if it doesn't meet your needs. I am glad I have a few cameras, each with their own strengths, that I can choose for the right occasion.

        • My goodness the butthurt is strong in this one!

Sidenote: this one will get ya - two things I consider more pointless in a camera than a vari-angle screen are wi-fi capability and GPS tracking.

        • -1

So maybe those things are not necessarily pointless, but rather you don't use them, so those features don't influence your personal choice of camera.

        • Don't look at anything that hasn't got a vari-angle screen…

          Pot, meet kettle.

I'm giving advice based on a budget, you are saying, "screw the budget and go with what I like."

        • -1

I'm giving advice based on a budget, you are saying, "screw the budget and go with what I like." - WTF????

Jubbing said: Would you buy this over that Sony NEX 6 deal? Price diff or not…?

The NEX 6 deal is $999.95 vs $488 for this 600d camera. I suggested the Panasonic G6 which is a arguably a better mirrorless than the NEX 6, and the G6 is a far superior camera to the 600D in so many ways it is not funny. Best of all - the G6 can be had for $544.06 delivered from B&H. If this guy can afford the $999.95 NEX 6 then I think I am comfortably within his budget with a $544.06 deal!

I actually have some Canon efs lenses that I use with an adapter on my NEX 3N. Sometimes I think why don't a grab a cheap old 600D. But every time I pick up a 600D and test it in the shop I realise that it is just a big old clunky DSLR.

Sure the 600D is a great beginners camera, just on the unbeatable price and flippy screen, but apart from that it is pretty mediocre value compared to some more recent cameras.

        • Talking about Junkee's post which we both replied to.

First camera for his partner, she wants to learn photography.

          You cannot be this stupid.

        • -1

Well put the comment under Junkee's post. That's a pretty simple concept - even a fool can work that out.
And with the price of the G6 at $544 its a worth while consideration against the 600D which is showing its age.
But of course if you are just learning about photography and wanted the cheapest you would buy a secondhand camera.

  • +1

Every camera has its own limitations and dificiencies.
All mentioned above cameras will do job for up to prosumers level.

Canon 600D is a good allrounder.

Thanks op, picked up one. Christmas pressie for my wife :)

At Big W this is eligible for Click and collect.

Put the 20OFF250 coupon in and save $20.00 bringing the total to $474.00 (Cheaper than OW).

    • It shows only in stock in store now on bigw website. Can not C&C.

FYI- if anyone is interested but miss this sale, amazon.com has the same camera (T3i- different model number in the states, for some reason) for $538 shipped by Xmas (if ordered today) & includes free 32GB card + camera bag. Seems a good price including the card & bag.

    Cheers!

    • Good price. Kogan are doing the Kiss X5 model for $532.99 delivered, but no bag or card.

  • Just went and picked one up. My first DSLR, now I just need something to take pictures of.

      Straya.

Last night charged the batteries and took a couple of photos of the bedside lamp/shadows to see low light quality. I'm pretty impressed, who would have thought it would take better pictures than an iphone. :)

Firstly, thanks to the OP for posting this. I had just decided to buy a DSLR for my partner only a week ago, so it was perfect timing.

Secondly, thanks to everyone for there recommendations on which to buy out of this and Nikon D3200.

After talking to a photographer friend who uses a Canon 6D, she recommended the Canon. She said that the extra 6MP on the Nikon really doesn't make a difference unless you are printing posters of your work and the images just take up more space on your hard drive. She also said the flip screen can be very handy.

So I went down to Office Works this afternoon and picked one up. I also grabbed the extra warranty for $80.00 to make it a total of 3 years.

    Cheers =)

    • Your friend gave you good advice, you won't regret the 600d, especially with the flip out screen.

  • For those who missed, you can get it from Amazon for $510 shipped as of today.

  • +1

I was reading this post and start researching about canon DSLR and found out about the discontinued stock of 650d which is replaced with 700d. So I went to Harvey norman and get lucky with getting the EOS 650d with 18-58mm IS lens kit for $559 as they are apparently on sale.

Thanks OP for the post, without this I wouldn't think about getting a DSLR

  • Bought the second-to-last one of these in Victoria at the Highett Officeworks 5 min before closing time today. The salesman there showed me on his inventory scanner that Keysborough has the last one! It's out of the new catalogue already and will probably be priced up next week.

Very happy with this as the kit lens seems to provide a crisper image than the D3200 (as compared on dpreview). I'm just a beginner stepping out to explore and learn so I'm very happy with this purchase.

But seeing how they're sold out at OW, I'm thinking it's an end of life clearance of the 600Ds going on everywhere, what with the 700D being offered with cash back but at a roughly +$200 price point.

  • why do you all think the mirrorless versions like the g6 are better than a slr?

    • -1

Supposedly mirrorless have better focusing ability - not sure why. One advantage is the weight and size saving. The mirror needs space to flip up. When it comes to video the mirror then becomes a burden as it must be held up all the time during recording.
So the only scenario where you would say slr is the choice is if you were only doing photography and you think you must have an optical view finder.
However, not all camera chips are created equal, so the Canon 5d mkiii is a fantastic camera not because it is slr but because it has a great chip and processing ability. The GH3 is also great for the same reason but it has other advantages that come with the mirrorless body.
