if they dropped these to $99 people would go nanas over them like the hp touchpad.
and people would end up with an unsupported albatross just like the hp touchpad.

        • +2

I was going to say wait for $59, but I'll take one at $49, well I'd consider it anyways, I might not actually commit.

        • +1

My albatross has been running cyanogen mod for ages, still has the best speakers for a tablet and is still one of a few tablets that support 5ghz Wi-Fi.

    • I wanted to say exactly that.

wait for $99 for the Pro

even better if $99 for Pro include the smart cover !!!

They are doing clearance of the old model. When the RT almost gone, it'll be the Pro's turn.

        • am starting to like u….u r stealing my thoughts ;)

Can anyone recommend a keyboard for these? The official keyboards are hideously expensive from big retailers.

    • I think Surface only works with their keyboard unless bluetooth.

      • No, pretty much any keyboard will work. USB, bluetooth, and official snap-on Microsoft keyboard covers.

        Logitech 'unified' receivers work.

    • I have surface 2, works fine with my Logitech K400, any logitech keyboard should work fine. I agree, skip the touch covers, way overpriced.

  • I have never had a windows 8 tablet, can you run any windows desktop app on them or is it a different OS?

    • This one is Windows RT so not a full Windows, you can only run apps from MS Store.

With the Metro interface I don't even know how to access my network shared drives.

      • have you read the manual?

      • Well like other tablets you download an app. Or you access the network shares via the application you want to run the file from.

        • Yes I know but I don't have a RT, I am just using the traditional way on my win8.1 laptop.

IE 11 on Metro won't allow magnet torrent link :P

        • RT still have File Explorer through the desktop.

        • IE11 does allow magnet links. Any links/files are able to work, but you will of course need an app that recognises the file type.

MetroTransmission recognises magnet torrent links in IE11 Metro. I use it a lot.

      • Accessing network/homegroup is a sinch, use desktop mode ;)

    • RT tablets no (this is a RT tablet)
      Pro tablets yes

      • Might as well buy an ultrabook instead of a Pro….you lose bigtime with battery life compared to the RT.

        7.5hours video playback vs 2hours.

RT tablets no (this is a RT tablet)
      Pro tablets yes

    • what desktop apps do you want to run?

      • Mostly I would just like to use this as an All in one type PC in my kitchen. Tablets are cheap enough now to start thinking about putting one in each room for occasional use and just showing the time etc. I would like to be able to run the desktop version of the chrome browser and desktop version extensions.

        • +3

Surface RT has a full desktop browser with Flash Support. True it doesn't have Chrome, but if you are into the Google ecosystem, then this isn't the device for you. Just like I wouldn't buy a Chrome book and start listing what it can't do.

        • -1

I already have a android tablet (which doesn't run the same chrome extensions as the windows desktop version either). I would like to familiarize myself with Windows tablet but I think I will wait for one that runs full windows apps.

        • Hi,

It sounds like you need a surface rt or surface 2, you dont need a full pc for occasional use. You have only mentioned 1 desktop app, are you running Autocad? Photoshop? some strange 1990 desktop program? The in built Internet explorer runs perfect on all the websites i use, including 'websites designed for chrome'. Is there a specific reason why you want chrome? you need to test our the Surface RT first, its amazing.

        • what full windows app are you going to run on a 10" screen?

  • -2

I can smell the fate of HP tablet…

    Did I need one? No
    Did I buy one? Yes
    Thanks!!!

      Comes with being an OzBargainer.

      • Dammit looks like they've given me a faulty one by the name of JV. How long is the return period?

  • Bought one for the parents for Christmas - got the $30 AMEX cash back and $5 newsletter discount - so $195 in total - thanks so much!

  • This is still tempting….but I have a win8 mobile so there will barely be a difference.

How much do you guys reckon the Pro will drop to?
I want a 13' laptop like the vaio pro, but don't want to spend anywhere near 1k :p

    Pretty average reviews.
Despite marketing as a 32gb tablet it only has about 16gb for storage. Also theres no point having 2GB of RAM when it uses an inefficient OS that slows it down significantly. Also battery life is average…

Looks pretty good to me for $199!

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7FUherhyvI

    • Closer to 20GB storage actually. All devices report storage the same way. The Surface box clearly states that some space is reserved for the OS and built-in apps/Office. And you can recover ~4GB if you don't mind losing the recovery option (or backing it up to USB).

Plus you get an SD card slot and USB port…storage is hardly an issue.

It's well known that most reviewers couldn't get their heads around Windows RT. They actually consider the extra functionality provided a bad thing, and then criticise RT for not having as much functionality as full Windows while at the same time saying iPad, et. al. were better despite having less functionality. It's just the old anti-Microsoft bandwaggon jumping nonsense. The devices are excellent, and with the 8.1 update the old Surface RT performs better than ever, and the OS updates have resolved many of the issues it had (e.g. not letting you store music/video library on the SD card, occasional sluggishness, bugs).

Battery life is similar to the same generation iPad and most Android tablets, so nitpicking over small differences there is pointless - any decent tablet will survive a full day of use, and the Surface tablets all get a couple of weeks on standby (with connected standby enabled).

Surface RT is not the best tablet on the market, but for the price it's definitely the best deal - free Office, desktop with file management and browser, USB, HDMI output, SD card, on-screen multitasking, comparable performance with other top tablets (that are also a year old, of course).

You know JB and HN is two difference company?

So do you get confused when Woolies and Coles sell a similar product for a similar price?

The deals are NOT the same: Different prices, different extras provided…

Thanks for making that important point.

  • Just wondering, to those who own a surface rt, have you noticed an uneven screen (kinda wavey)towards the bottom of the tablet? Like if you try to shine a straight object on the bottom portion of the table screen (where the windows logo is, the bezel portion) the object will appear not straight.

    • I have my RT next to me now, and I don't see anything like what you're describing. Never seen it on anybody else's either.

  • -5

RT is no longer made. It is a passe os no one makes RT now so there will be no RT support, no RT apps in future.
JB also doing same everyone getting rid of old un saleable useless unsupported goods.

    • +3

Do some research instead of spouting ill informed nonsense.

The new Surface 2 is still RT and is still being made. Maybe down the track they will stop RT but that isn't happening now. Also just because they stop making RT machines doesn't mean they will be obsolete. RT machines will always run apps made for the metro interface of Windows 8.

    • This is so wrong and uninformed that I harly know where to start…

      1) Microsoft and Nokia still make RT devices (the latest Surface 2, released a month ago), though other manufacturers have stopped making RT devices.

      2) Any Windows 8/8.1 computer/tablet still runs the same apps as Windows RT (thus any non-desktop apps made for Widnows 8/8.1 PCs and tablets will also run on Windows RT. As long as there are Windows tablets running non-desktop apps those apps will be compatible with Windows RT.

      3) The Windows store is growing very quickly (quicker than the Android and iOS t
ablet stores grew), and anybody who has developed for Windows in the past already knows 80% of what they need to develop for Windows modern apps. Windows 8 supports HTML5/Java natively, so most developers can easily port and develop for Windows, which is why there is an ever increasing number of ported iOS and Android apps reaching Microsoft's mobile platforms.

      4) Like all Microsoft products, Windows RT will be supported officially for years - long past any individual device's useful life cycle

If you think the Windows Store, which has gone from 0 to well over 100,000 apps in 1 year, is going to suddenly fade away you're a fool who doesn't understand the tech/computer industry at all. And as long as the Windows Store is around Windows RT will have all of those apps available (as well as a great browser that does a great job with all the modern fancy websites that are essentially apps in themselves).

  • +1

The new wave of windows 8.1 tablets are out in America. The new 8" quad core atoms powered Lenovo miix2, Toshiba encore, dell venue pro 8 this RT is obsolete even at $229.

    • The Surface RT is far from obsolete. I'm using my old one (my Surface 2 broke…) and I'm genuinely surprised at how slick it is with Windows RT 8.1 on it. It's certainly not up there with the latest iPad (or Surface 2), and the screen is lacking, but it's a great tablet on a budget.

Those cheap full Windows tablets are sub-par, and that's before installing desktop software that can seriously reduce battery life and performance.

  • bought one thanks! Btw they sent me a coupon code. Dont know if its one time use but up for the taking Welcome5EORCY5EFF9G2

    • what is the code for?

      • It's a personalised code for a $5 discount on another HN order and expires 100 hours after issue. No use to anybody but the individual it is issued to, as far as I can tell from the one they sent to me. Also, the fine print says, "Minimum order value of $25. Voucher limited to 1 per person. Excludes Harvey Norman & iTunes Gift Cards"

        • No use to anybody but the individual it is issued to, as far as I can tell from the one
          they sent to me.

Actually, I don't think it is attached to your acc. Just tried applying the code & it worked. They're just generic randomly generated codes. Didn't use it though as easily gotten with fake email gens.

  • So if I buy with ANZ AMEX will I still get it for $199?
Also where can I purchase the cheapest authentic keyboard?
    Thanks

    • It's only for AMEX cards issued by American Express who can manage their cards online and view offers. Doesn't work for bank issued cards.

  • Guys I did a review for the Surface 2, although not the RT many points raised will be relevent, check it out.
